Chapter 1 of The Alpha's Fatal Choice: My Broken Mate Bond

I always knew my husband still thought about his first love.

For five years, I stood by Knox's side as his loyal Luna.

I raised his son, Theo, pouring all my maternal love into making him a confident heir.

Knox treated me with absolute respect, and I gave him my entire soul.

Everything shattered on the night of the Pack's anniversary banquet.

A rogue wolf slipped a rare Silver Venom into the champagne tower.

Bianca, Knox's childhood sweetheart who had just returned, collapsed coughing up blood.

I fell beside her, the same agonizing fire tearing through my wolf core.

The pack doctor rushed in, discovering only one dose of the antidote left in the emergency kit.

I lay on the marble floor, looking at my husband with desperate eyes.

My nine-year-old son grabbed Knox's arm, pointing not at me, but at Bianca.

"Mom is the Luna, she is stronger than Bianca, she can hold on!"

I watched in utter disbelief as Knox turned his back on me.

He injected the only remaining antidote straight into Bianca's arm.

"Evelyn is tough," Knox said coldly, ignoring my fading breath. "She'll survive."

***

Black blood splashed across the banquet hall floor before I understood what was happening.

One second I was raising a champagne flute beside my mate, Alpha Knox Blackwood. The next, fire tore through my throat and raced down every vein in my body. My knees struck the polished stone. The glass slipped from my hand and shattered beside my palm.

Across the dais, Bianca Vale collapsed with a scream.

Guests scattered. Chairs overturned. Somewhere near the service doors, a waiter ripped off his white jacket and bolted for the corridor. Two guards chased him, but the scene already made sense. The bitter metallic taste coating my tongue was unmistakable.

Silver Venom.

"Evelyn!" Dr. Sarah Reed dropped beside me, her medical bag skidding across the floor. She pressed two fingers to my neck, then spun toward Bianca. "Both pulses are unstable. Their core temperatures are climbing."

Knox stood over us, face stripped of color. "Treat them."

Sarah tore open a foam case. Only one blue vial remained inside.

She froze.

"What?" Knox demanded.

"The attacker smashed the antidote cabinet before he came into the hall." Sarah held up the vial. "This is the last dose in the estate. The next supply is at the southern clinic, at least forty minutes away."

A fresh spasm locked my chest. My wolf, Nyra, slammed against the inside of my mind, frantic and terrified. I tried to call Knox through the mate bond, but the venom had numbed my throat and blurred the connection into static.

Bianca curled on her side, sobbing. "Knox, please. I can't breathe."

Sarah looked from her to me. "One full dose will neutralize the poison in one patient. Splitting it will leave both under-treated. Alpha, you have seconds."

Knox snatched the syringe from her hand.

For one desperate heartbeat, he moved toward me.

I lifted my arm. My fingers barely cleared the floor.

Then Theo crashed into his father's leg.

"Dad, save Aunt Bianca!" my nine-year-old son screamed.

Knox looked down sharply. "Theo, get back."

"She's weaker!" Theo clung to his jacket. Tears ran down his face. "Mom is the Luna. Mom is strong. She always gets better. Aunt Bianca can't die. She promised we'd ride tomorrow."

Sarah went rigid. "Theo, your mother is dying too."

He finally looked at me.

I will never forget the way his fear turned into calculation. He saw my blackened lips, the blood on my dress, the hand I was still trying to reach toward him. Then he looked back at Bianca.

"Mom can hold on," he said.

Five years earlier, when Knox inherited a territory on the edge of collapse, I emptied my family trust to repair the eastern watchtowers. I sold heirloom jewelry to buy winter grain. I slept on clinic floors when Theo had shift fever and negotiated border treaties while Knox recovered from battle wounds.

They had turned every survival into evidence that I needed less care.

"Alpha," Sarah warned. "Evelyn's wolf core is destabilizing. Choose now."

Knox's gaze met mine.

I pushed everything I had into the bond. Fear. Pain. A single plea.

Do not leave me.

His expression hardened.

"Bianca gets the antidote."

Sarah stared at him. "Knox—"

"Do it."

He dropped beside Bianca and drove the needle into her vein himself.

The blue liquid disappeared beneath her skin.

My arm fell.

Bianca's convulsions eased within seconds. Knox gathered her against his chest, one hand supporting the back of her head. Theo crouched beside them, crying with relief.

Sarah grabbed Knox's sleeve. "I need your blood for Evelyn. Your mate bond can help stabilize her while I filter the toxin."

Bianca moaned.

Knox pulled free.

"Keep Evelyn alive," he ordered. "She can take more than Bianca can."

"That isn't medicine. That's an assumption."

"She survived the border wars. She'll survive this."

He lifted Bianca and carried her toward the doors.

Theo ran after him.

Neither looked back.

The doors slammed shut, cutting off their footsteps.

For several seconds, the entire banquet hall seemed to hold its breath. Then the servants who had hidden behind overturned tables began moving again. A guard dragged the poisoned waiter back through the side entrance, but he was already unconscious, foam gathering at the corner of his mouth. Sarah shouted for someone to preserve his clothes, his tray, and every glass still on the floor. Even while trying to keep me alive, she was building a chain of evidence.

I watched the guard kick the rogue's serving jacket away from Bianca's abandoned glass. A small bronze household token rolled out of the pocket and stopped near my hand. It carried the crest used by senior Blackwood staff. I tried to point at it. Sarah followed my gaze and snatched it up with a pair of forceps.

"Bag it," she ordered. "Nobody touches this without a witness."

That tiny order mattered. Knox had taken the antidote and left, but Sarah was still treating my life as something worth protecting.

Sarah swore and ripped open another tray. "Charcoal. Saline. Get me ice!" she shouted toward the terrified staff gathering at the corridor. "And call the southern clinic. Tell them I need every filtration cartridge they have."

I caught her wrist.

"Evelyn, don't waste your breath."

I forced the words through my damaged throat. "My coat. Inner pocket."

She hesitated, then reached for the ruined coat a server had kicked beneath the table. From the hidden pocket she pulled a cream envelope stamped with the seal of the High Tribunal's protected-resident program.

I had applied three weeks ago after Bianca moved into the guest villa and Knox began overruling my access to pack security files. I had told myself it was only a precaution.

Now it was an exit.

"Send it," I rasped.

Sarah's eyes widened. "This requests emergency sanctuary outside Blackwood territory."

"Send it before he can revoke my clearance."

Another wave of poison hit my heart. The ceiling blurred.

Sarah clutched the envelope in one bloody hand and my wrist in the other.

"Stay with me," she ordered.

The last thing I heard before darkness took me was the secure message tone confirming that my sanctuary petition had left the Blackwood server.
