Chapter 1 of The Alpha Rejected Me for His Chosen Luna

The bond broke at 10:14 p.m. on the night of the autumn bonfire.

I felt it the moment Sebastian opened his mouth. The words came out slow and deliberate, each syllable landing like a stone dropped into still water. "I, Sebastian Meyer, Alpha of Ironridge, reject you, Lilith Campbell, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Ice-cold, like someone pressed a frozen coin against my throat. Then the cold spread inward—through muscle, past bone, straight into my chest where something that had been barely alive for three years suddenly wasn't. The pain came next. Sharp. Lancing. Like a door slamming shut in an empty room and the sound echoing forever.

My knees hit the dirt.

I heard the pack's collective intake of breath. Some turned away. Others leaned in. I pressed my fingers against the mark and felt it already changing under my touch—the faint warmth Sebastian's incomplete bond had left behind cooling into nothing, the skin going grey and hollow.

Sebastian didn't look at me. He was already turning toward Emilia Warren, who stood beside him in a cream dress that caught the firelight, her smile soft and satisfied. His arm wrapped around her waist. She leaned into him. The pack murmured approval.

I forced myself upright. My legs shook but held. I kept my hand on my neck, covering the scar, and I did not make a sound.

No one stopped me when I walked away from the bonfire. No one followed.

The rejection scar's aftermath hit in waves.

I sat alone in my quarters—the small room at the back of the pack house that had been mine for three years—and felt the cold radiating outward from my throat in slow pulses. My wolf, the faint presence that had been my only companion in this place, went silent. Not dormant. Just... gone. Like she'd been holding on by a thread and Sebastian's words had finally cut it.

My hands shook as I pressed my palm flat against the grey mark. I took inventory. A moonstone-glass vial sewn into the lining of my bag. An omega pup curled against my feet, his warmth the only thing keeping me tethered. And a memory ten years old: a Lycan Prince's hands pulling me from the dark, his scent burning itself into my mind so completely I had never forgotten it.

That was what I had left.

Sebastian summoned me to his office two hours later.

I walked through the pack house with the rejection scar still raw on my neck. Pack members stepped aside when they saw me coming. One of the younger she-wolves whispered something to her friend and they both looked away quickly. I kept my chin level and my expression blank.

Sebastian was standing behind his desk when I entered. No chair offered. Emilia sat in the corner, her legs crossed, watching me with the detached interest of someone observing an insect.

"Sit," Sebastian said.

I stayed standing.

He sighed, like I was being difficult. "Lilith. I'm offering you something here. You should listen."

"I'm listening," I said. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that.

Sebastian leaned forward, palms flat on the desk. "You can stay in Ironridge. Keep your quarters. Keep your territory rights. Keep that runt you've been hiding." His eyes flicked toward the door, where Waffles was presumably still curled on my bed. "But you'll need to earn it."

I said nothing.

"There's a problem," Sebastian continued. "Lycan Prince Castiel Vargas. He's been circling Emilia for years. Political courtship. He's a threat to our bond, to this pack's stability. I need him neutralized."

Emilia's smile widened slightly.

"You look enough like Emilia," Sebastian said. "Close enough. Same build. Similar features. And you're... unattached now." He gestured vaguely at my neck. "You'll infiltrate Silverfang Pack. Get close to the Prince. Seduce him if you have to. Sabotage his alliance negotiations. Make him look weak in front of the Lycan Council."

I stared at him. He thought this was mercy. He thought he was giving me a purpose.

"And if I refuse?" I asked.

Sebastian's expression hardened. "Then you leave Ironridge tonight. No protection. No territory. And the runt goes with you."

I pressed my fingers once against the cold scar on my neck. Felt the grey, hollow skin. Felt the absence where Sebastian's incomplete bond had been.

And I agreed.

Sebastian's shoulders relaxed. He thought I was compliant. Desperate. Still his.

I wasn't.

I left his office, walked back to my quarters, and began packing immediately.

The wolfsbane suppressant tincture burned going down. I grimaced, swallowed it, and felt the familiar chemical heat spreading through my chest. It would mask my scent. Make me unremarkable. Forgettable. Exactly what I needed.

I forged transfer documentation in the early hours before dawn—Delta rank, dissolved minor pack, unremarkable history. I sewed my mother's moonstone-glass vial deeper into the lining of my bag, loaded Waffles into a carrier, and walked out of Ironridge territory as the sky turned grey.

The rejection scar was cold in the morning air. I touched it once, briefly, and kept walking.

I crossed into Silverfang territory at first light.

The border checkpoint was manned by two guards—both young, both wary. They looked at my paperwork, then at the grey scar on my neck, then at the omega pup in the carrier.

"Transfer request," I said.

One guard exchanged a glance with the other. "The Prince conducts all intake assessments personally."

My pulse spiked. I controlled it immediately. "That's fine."

The guard nodded slowly. "Wait here."

I set the carrier down and pressed my hand against Waffles's fur through the mesh. He whined softly.

"It's okay," I whispered.

I had waited ten years for a reason to walk into Castiel Vargas's world. Sebastian had just handed it to me. I wasn't going to waste it on nerves.

The guard returned. "The Prince will see you at the pack house. Follow me."

I picked up the carrier and followed.
