Pain is an old friend.
It clings to me, wraps around my bones like a second skin, whispering its cruel lullaby with every breath I take. But this time, it is different. This time, pain does not weep. It does not fold into itself and shatter quietly. No, this pain is raw, seething—alive.
It pulses through me like an untamed beast, demanding retribution.
I stand before my bedroom mirror, the reflection of a woman I barely recognize staring back at me. My face is hollow, my once-bright eyes dimmed with grief and rage. The dress I shredded lies in a crumpled heap at my feet, torn like my trust, discarded like my love.
Maia and Kieran.
Their names alone are enough to send another wave of fury crashing through my veins. How had I been so blind? How had I let them deceive me so thoroughly?
I squeeze my eyes shut, and the memories come unbidden.
"I love Maia, she understands me in ways you never could."
The words echo like a curse, each syllable slicing deeper into my already-battered soul.
She Understands him? —She Understands him?
The only reason she "Understands" him is because I poured every part of my heart into her ears, never once suspecting that she was twisting my words into something sordid behind my back.
I imagine them together, the way he must have held her the same way he held me. The way he whispered sweet nothings in her ear, promises he never meant.
My fingers curl into fists, nails biting into my palms until they draw blood. The sharp sting grounds me, a reminder that I am still here. Still breathing.
I refuse to live in this torment.
I will not be the foolish, discarded woman everyone whispers about.
I will not bow my head in shame while they revel in their betrayal.
A slow, cold smile stretches across my lips. If they want to see me broken, they will have to wait an eternity.
Because I am done being the victim.
I am done being weak.
And I am done letting them win.
I stepped out into the pack square, head held high. The usual whispers follow me like ghosts, but today, they do not cut as deep.
"Did you hear? She still hasn't left."
"I would have run away in shame if I were her."
"Poor thing. First, her mate rejects her, and now she's alone. How pathetic."
Pathetic?
I tighten my grip on my cloak, forcing my expression into one of calm indifference. They do not know that fire now burns beneath my skin, waiting for the right moment to consume everything in its path.
Then, as if summoned by my thoughts, they appear.
Maia and Kieran.
The crowd parts for them effortlessly, the pack bowing their heads in submission as their beloved Alpha and his perfect mate stroll through the square like royalty.
And why wouldn't they?
They have everything now.
Each other. Their status. Their stolen happiness.
Seeing them together, wrapped in the love that was stolen from me, was a slow, exquisite torture. Maia, draped in the happiness that should have been mine. Kieran, wearing his new life so easily, as if I had never mattered.
Maia's laughter rings through the air, the sound once familiar, now grating against my ears like nails on stone. She leans into him, her delicate fingers trailing over his chest as she whispers something that makes him smirk.
Kieran's hand finds her waist, a touch I once believed belonged only to me.
For a moment, just a fleeting second, I hesitate.
Would they even care if I disappeared? If I simply faded into the background, like a bad dream forgotten in the light of day?
Then Maia turns.
Her gaze meets mine, and for the first time, I see it.
The arrogance.
The satisfaction.
The way her lips curl upward, just slightly, just enough to tell me that she is enjoying this.
My blood turns to ice.
She wanted this.
Not just Kieran. Not just my pain.
She wanted me to watch.
To suffer.
I swallow back the bitter bile rising in my throat and lift my chin. If she expects me to crumble, to run, to be the weak little fool who lets them win—she is mistaken.
The war has just begun.
I smile. A slow, deliberate curve of my lips that makes Maia’s smug expression falter for just a fraction of a second.
Good.
Let her wonder what I am planning.
Let them both wonder.
They may have stolen my love, my trust, my dignity.
But they will get what's coming for them in full folds.
