Chapter 1 of She Reported the Grandma Who Raised Her Son for Free

1: 1

My grandmother watched a neighbor's kid for free for five years.

She picked him up from school, dropped him off, cooked his meals, sat with him through his homework. Never took a cent.

Then that woman's son grabbed another kid's bike, took a spill, and scraped some skin off his arm.

And she turned right around and reported my grandmother for "running an illegal daycare" and "child abuse."

The education office came knocking. The school issued a notice.

My grandmother taught for forty years, and for the first time in her life someone humiliated her to her face:

"Selling out your good name in your old age, over pocket change."

And then she had the nerve to ask my grandmother to bake a birthday cake for Rolf Chavez:

"If it weren't for my son keeping you company, a lonely old woman like you could die at home and nobody would even know."

She thought reporting people was a free weapon.

This time, I was going to show her:

When you push someone off a cliff, karma comes to collect.

The people from the education office came with a community cop and knocked on my grandmother's door.

In the living room, three neighbor kids were bent over the little table doing their homework.

Slices of apple my grandmother had just cut sat on the coffee table.

The one in charge was from the district education office.

Behind him stood two men in uniform, grim-faced, like they'd come to arrest a criminal.

"Ms. Whitney, we've received a report that you're running an unlicensed daycare,"

"with allegations of child abuse. We'll need you to cooperate with our investigation."

My grandmother froze. Seventy-some years old, still clutching the tissue she'd been using to wipe a neighbor kid's mouth, she couldn't make sense of it for the longest moment.

I stepped up fast to explain.

"My grandmother isn't running any daycare!"

"She's a retired elementary school teacher. The neighbors are stretched thin."

"She helps watch their kids for free. She's never asked for a dime."

The officials took a quick look around.

The living room was spotless, pencils and notebooks lined up neat on the table.

On the kids' homework, my grandmother's red check marks.

Piers Abbott, one of the neighbor kids, planted himself in front of my grandmother.

"Grandma Bernice Whitney loves us the most."

"You leave her alone!"

Their faces softened, but the by-the-book tone didn't change.

"Free or not, it's still not allowed."

"Ms. Whitney, we understand you mean well, but rules are rules."

"No private individual may organize childcare under any name."

"We'll be notifying your former employer. There'll be a formal warning on record."

When word reached the elementary school my grandmother had retired from, Principal Finch tore into her over the phone.

"Ms. Whitney! Retired or not, you have to think about how this looks!"

"Over a few pennies, and now if this gets out, what are people going to think of the teachers at our school?"

My grandmother gripped the receiver, her lips moving without sound for a long moment, and at last said quietly,

"Yes. Yes, it was my fault."

She taught for forty years. She was even Principal Finch's own teacher once.

But now her whole body seemed to fold inward.

I snatched the phone away.

"Principal Finch, get your facts straight! My grandmother doesn't take money!"

"She's been helping that woman Meg Chavez, driving her kid to and from school for five years, and Meg turned around and reported her!"

"You'd be Ms. Whitney's grandson, Rex Chavez, right? Watch your attitude!"

Principal Finch snapped.

"A report means there's something to it. Don't come at me with excuses!"

"This time it's just a notice and a minor sanction."

"There's a next time, and you'd better start worrying about your grandmother's pension!"

I wanted to fire back, but my grandmother tugged at my sleeve and shook her head.

Her eyes had gone red. Slowly she untied her apron, folded it, and put it back in the drawer.

That night, Meg actually had the gall to call.

"Ms. Whitney, tomorrow's Rolf's birthday. Bake a few birthday cakes and bring them over."

"You've got nothing to do at home anyway, and I'm swamped."

I nearly went off. She reported my grandmother, and she still had the face to ask her to bake a cake for her kid?

My grandmother was quiet for a few seconds, then said calmly,

"Ms. Chavez, I'm afraid of getting reported. I don't dare go near your son anymore."

There was a pause on the other end, and then she laughed.

"Ms. Whitney, are you sulking?"

"A friend of mine handled that report for me. She said the rules are strict these days. I was just worried about dragging you into trouble."

"And think about it. Letting Rolf keep you company, isn't that a little companionship for you too?"

"A lonely old woman could die at home and nobody would even know. I'm doing this for your own good!"

Standing there, I was shaking all over. I wanted to grab the phone and scream at her.

Back then, my grandmother saw a single mother raising a kid on her own and felt sorry for her, so she pitched in with the pickups and looked after the boy.

Who knew she'd give an inch and take a mile.

You wouldn't say something that vicious to a stranger, let alone to the person who'd helped you.

My grandmother didn't hand me the phone. She only said, flatly,

"No need. Don't send the boy over anymore."

She hung up and turned away to wipe the corner of her eye.

For five years, she'd driven Rolf to and from school for Meg, handled lunch and dinner, sat with him over homework until nine at night.

And Meg?

She'd come back from a facial and a day of shopping and walk in without so much as a thank-you, and still find something to nitpick.

"Ms. Whitney, the boy's growing. Stop making all these vegetable dishes. Beef and shrimp aren't that expensive."

My grandmother pitied the child and said nothing.

She knew if she didn't feed him, he'd be at home living on crackers.

Later, one by one, other single-parent neighbors had kids with no one to watch them, and my grandmother just took them all in too.

And now, all because Rolf grabbed Piers Abbott's bike and took a fall.

Scraped a little skin off his arm. A dab of antiseptic and it was done.

Meg blew up, said her son had been bullied by the other kids.

Blamed my grandmother for not looking after her son alone, for letting the other children eat into his share of attention.

And then, just like that, a report:

"Running an illegal daycare."

"Child abuse."

I looked at my grandmother's bent back and clenched my fists.

This freeloader had taken everything, and still wanted her to bake a birthday cake.

This was not going to slide. You think your son has people to protect him and my grandmother has no one?
