Severed Vows A Mafia Love Story

The performance was flawless. Every note of hurt, every flutter of her lashes, calibrated to perfection.

Gianluca's expression darkened as he turned to me. Frustration tightened the lines around his mouth. "I'm doing this for your own good," he said. "How can you not understand that? We need a proper gown for the ceremony photos."

His condescension only sharpened the blade of my anger. "Then use AI to generate the photos," I snapped. "Why is trying on a dress so important?"

I had had enough. Without another word, I turned on my heel and walked toward the door.

Gianluca's composure cracked. "You're just going to walk away?" he called after me, his voice rising, the veneer of civility peeling away to reveal something ugly underneath. "You can't match Adelina's looks anyway. Maybe it's better if we skip the photos entirely, so we don't ruin anyone's mood."

Behind him, Adelina placed a gentle hand on his arm and said in a sweet, placating tone, "Don't be too hard on Adriana. She's your fiancée, after all."

The way she said fiancée, with that deliberate, poisoned emphasis, as if the word itself were a joke they shared, only seemed to deepen Gianluca's irritation. He muttered under his breath, "Who cares if she's my fiancée?"

I didn't stop. I didn't turn around. I walked out of the boutique and into the cold afternoon air, and I kept walking until the door closed behind me and their voices faded to nothing.

I spent the rest of that day packing my things and moving to a hotel. A quiet place on the edge of the city, the kind of establishment that didn't ask questions and didn't keep records that mattered. Gianluca didn't reach out. Not that evening, not the next day, not the day after. I wasn't sure if he was angry, or if he simply hadn't noticed I was gone. Both possibilities said the same thing about what I meant to him.

While I sat alone in a hotel room with my suitcase packed and my flight confirmed, Gianluca was busy performing for the world.

He posted a photograph on social media: himself and Adelina, side by side, her head tilted toward his shoulder, both of them smiling. The caption read: "After all the twists and turns, it's still you."

The comments poured in like a flood. Our mutual acquaintances, people from the periphery of the life who didn't know the real story, who only saw the polished surface of things, fell over themselves to congratulate him.

"Gianluca's so devoted! He must have been chasing her for years. Congratulations on finally winning the heart of such a beauty!"

"I've been rooting for you two for so long. You're a perfect match!"

Gianluca responded to every congratulatory message with a smiling emoji, reinforcing the narrative with each reply. The devoted man and his true love, finally united after years of longing. It didn't matter that he was supposed to be marrying someone else in forty-eight hours. It didn't matter that the blood-bound union between the Ferraro and Castellano families was still technically in place. What mattered was the story he wanted to tell, and the woman he wanted to tell it about.

And that woman was not me.

The day before the ceremony, Gianluca finally sent me a message. He had used some digital tool to generate a wedding photo of us, a crude, artificial mockup with our faces pasted onto ill-fitting bodies. The neck didn't match the shoulders. The lighting was wrong. The whole thing looked like a bad forgery, the kind of sloppy work that would get a man killed in the counterfeiting business.

His message read: "Stop being so stubborn. If you were even half as thoughtful as Adelina, we'd have had our ceremony photos done weeks ago. Instead, we're stuck with this rough AI creation."

I looked at the image for a long time. The mismatched proportions. The artificial smiles. The hollow mockery of what a union portrait was supposed to represent.

I deleted it without replying.

On the morning of the ceremony, I rose early. The hotel room was still dark, the curtains drawn against the pale winter light. I dressed in silence, checked my bag one final time, and sat on the edge of the bed to compose a single message.

I kept it brief. There was nothing left to explain that the silence hadn't already said.

I sent it, powered off my phone, picked up my suitcase, and walked out.

The drive to the airport was quiet. I watched the city slide past the taxi window, the old neighborhoods giving way to highways, the familiar skyline shrinking in the rearview mirror. I felt surprisingly calm. Lighter than I had in months. Ending things with Gianluca Castellano, severing the alliance that had defined the last five years of my life, was not the devastation I had feared. It was release. It was the first full breath I had taken since the night I found those messages on his phone.

The Ferraro name might be diminished. The alliance might be broken. The families would talk, and the talk would not be kind. But I would be free. And freedom, I was learning, was worth more than any blood-bound pact sealed in a room full of men who saw me as a territory to be absorbed.

I boarded the flight to Hudson City. Neutral ground. A place where the old names carried less weight and the shadows were shorter. A place where I could disappear.

The plane lifted off, and I watched the city fall away beneath the clouds, growing smaller and smaller until it was nothing at all.

But the moment I landed, before I had even collected my bag from the overhead compartment, my phone buzzed with an unexpected call.
