Chapter 1 of Seven Years of Mate, Seven Seconds to Ruin

Werewolf

The moon hung low in the sky, heavy and full, as I stood frozen outside the ancient timber hall of the Greyfang pack. My fingers trembled around the crescent moon pendant I had crafted as a gift for my mate, Kieran. Seven years of devotion, of imagining our future as bonded wolves.

“How much longer are you going to string Talia along?” a gruff voice growled from the other side of the heavy oak door.

My heart stuttered, the sound of my name sending a jolt of pain through my chest. My claws unconsciously extended, biting into the soft wood of the pendant.

“Come on, Kieran,” another voice said, a smirk audible in its tone. “Lyra’s been asking about you since she got back from the Highlands.”

A low chuckle followed. “To think you’ve been cozying up with Damien’s sister all this time,” someone sneered. “Does he even know his best friend has been dallying with his runaway sibling?”

Damien. My older brother. His name struck me like a sharp slap. The same brother Kieran had claimed was just a fellow packmate, someone he’d only met after joining Greyfang. How could I have been so blind?

“The look on his face when he finds out…” the voice continued.

“He won’t,” Kieran’s familiar baritone broke through the others. It no longer sounded warm and protective but cold, calculating. “Talia was just… convenient. A placeholder while Lyra was away.”

“Seven years is a long placeholder,” someone whistled, the sound sharp and cruel.

“She made it easy,” Kieran said, his tone laced with cruel amusement. “So desperate for love after her family banished her. All her stories about reconnecting with her brother, about waiting to make it official when the pack ceremony bonded us. She believed every word.”

The pendant slipped from my hand, hitting the stone floor with a small, metallic clink. The voices inside fell silent.

“Did you hear that?”

I didn’t wait to hear more. I bolted, my legs carrying me away from the hall, away from the lies, and away from the wolf I thought I could trust. I left the pendant behind, abandoned just like the years I’d wasted on him.

I collapsed onto the furs in my den, tears staining the thick, gray pelt. The darkness of the small room mirrored the growing void inside me. Every memory, every moonlit run, every whispered promise replayed in my mind like a cruel trick of fate.

The den door creaked open, and I wiped at my face with trembling hands, trying to still my racing heart as his footsteps approached.

“Talia?” Kieran’s voice was the same as always—soft, full of that familiar warmth that had once felt like home. “You won’t believe what happened tonight at the gathering.”

I swallowed the bile rising in my throat and turned to face him. “What happened?”

“Nothing too exciting. Good to catch up with the pack,” he said, pulling off his ceremonial vest. “Though there was this weird thing—someone dropped a moon pendant outside the hall. Looked handmade. Can you believe that?”

My stomach twisted. “That… is strange.”

“Oh, and tomorrow night, we’re heading to Lyra’s den. She’s hosting a feast to celebrate her return.” He stretched out beside me, his tone casual. “You’ll come, right?”

Lyra. The name burned like fire in my chest. I forced a smile. “Of course. Wouldn’t miss it.”

He leaned down and kissed my forehead, his touch feeling like a searing brand rather than a comfort. “Good. Get some rest.”

As his breathing evened out, I stared up at the rocky ceiling, tears silently streaming down my temples.

The next night, Kieran’s hand rested possessively on my lower back as we entered Lyra’s den. The air inside was thick with the scent of roasted meat and burning cedar, a mockery of warmth and welcome. His touch sent chills down my spine, every affectionate gesture now feeling like a calculated performance.

“Talia, my love, try the mead,” he said, pressing a carved wooden cup into my hand before kissing my temple in front of the gathered wolves.

Lyra stood near the central fire, her crimson cloak flowing behind her like blood against the stone floor. Her piercing amber eyes locked onto Kieran as if I weren’t even there.

I excused myself, desperate for a moment away from the suffocating tension. The cool air of the cave hallway was a relief, but it didn’t last long.

“Well, if it isn’t the lost little pup,” Lyra’s voice echoed behind me, low and venomous.

I turned to see her leaning against the wall, a sly grin curling her lips. Her cloak slid off one shoulder, revealing the silver pendant of her family crest. She exuded the kind of confidence that made me feel small in comparison.

“Must be nice,” she began, circling me like a predator, “pretending to be part of a pack, playing mate to someone who doesn’t truly belong to you. Did you really think you could keep him?”

My jaw tightened, but no words came. How did she know about my past? My banishment? The pain I had only ever shared with—

Kieran. He had told her everything. My deepest wounds, my darkest fears, laid bare.

“Cat got your tongue?” she sneered, stepping closer. “Oh, Talia, Kieran has always been mine. You were just a distraction, a warm body for him to lie beside until I returned.”

Her words struck like claws to my heart. “You don’t know anything about us.”

“Oh, don’t I?” Her smile widened. “Tuesday night ring a bell? When you were out scouting the ridge?”

I froze, the memory of Tuesday flashing in my mind. The same night Kieran had greeted me with a tender nuzzle and an extra-long embrace.

“He came to me,” she whispered, her breath hot against my ear. “And let me tell you, Talia, there are things he does with me that he’d never dare do with you. Said you were too… tame. But me?” She let out a low, sultry laugh. “I bring out the beast in him.”

I stumbled back, bile rising in my throat. The firelight from the main chamber cast shadows across her face, making her smile look even more menacing.

“Enjoy the feast, little wolf,” she purred. “While you can.”

She turned and disappeared into the hall, leaving me standing there, trembling, the weight of her words crushing my chest. I could feel the pull of the moon outside—its cold, relentless gaze reminding me that I would need to choose. Stay silent, or let the wolf within me rise and reclaim what was mine.
