Chapter 1 of You Said My Baby Was His, So Why Are You Crying at My Wedding

I was twelve weeks pregnant when my husband played a hotel video in front of his entire family and asked how many times I had slept with his worst enemy.

I told Nathan the baby was his.

He looked at my stomach like it disgusted him.

When I followed him toward the stairs, begging him to believe me, he shoved me away.

I woke up in the hospital without my baby and with a divorce statement already online.

Everyone called Roman Hale my lover.

Roman never touched me.

He only sat beside my hospital bed and asked, “Where does it hurt?”

Months later, Nathan came back holding the DNA report that proved the baby had always been his.

He wanted another chance.

But by then, the man he accused me of choosing had taught me something my husband never did.

Love should not require me to prove I deserve to be believed.

And this time, I was the one choosing.

AVERY'S POV

Two hours before everything fell apart, Nathan was kneeling on the hardwood floor of our empty guest room, pressing his palm flat against my stomach.

"Pale green," he had said, looking up at me with a soft curve to his mouth. "Like sage. It feels calmer than off-white. What do you think?"

"I think we have six months to decide," I replied, running my fingers through his dark hair. "You don't need to paint the nursery this weekend."

"I want everything ready." He leaned forward and pressed a warm kiss against the fabric of my white dress, right over my lower abdomen. "Especially after the genetic screening. I just want him to be healthy, Avery. That's all that matters."

Because of the congenital heart defects running through the Reed family line, we had spent Tuesday morning giving blood samples for extensive testing. Because Nathan's sample was part of the trio analysis used to trace the inherited cardiac markers, the lab's standard report also included a paternal match confirmation. The results were still days away, but Nathan had barely slept since, worried our child might inherit his family's curse. Seeing him so gentle, so fiercely protective of our twelve-week pregnancy, had made me fall in love with him all over again.

That memory was the only thing keeping me steady as we stood in the ballroom of the Grandview Hotel for his mother’s fiftieth birthday gala.

The room was packed with the city's business elite, crystal chandeliers casting sharp light across polished marble and champagne flutes. Nathan stood beside me, one hand resting possessively on the small of my back as his mother, Eleanor, prepared to play a tribute video on the massive projection screen at the front of the hall.

"To fifty years of family and legacy," Eleanor announced into the microphone with a proud smile.

The lights dimmed.

The screen flickered to life, but it wasn't a montage of family photos.

A grainy surveillance timestamp appeared in the top corner: *OCTOBER 14 – 02:14 AM.*

My stomach tightened. The footage showed a high-end hotel hallway. A woman walked down the corridor, knocked, and slipped inside suite 1408.

It was me.

The video jumped forward to 03:22 AM, showing me leaving the room. Then the montage cut sharply to a different angle—Roman Hale standing in the doorway wearing nothing but a low-slung towel, followed by a still photo of me in the elevator, my hair disheveled, my blouse half-unbuttoned at the collar.

A suffocating silence dropped over the ballroom.

Murmurs erupted like a sudden wave. Dozens of eyes snapped from the glowing screen to where Nathan and I stood.

Nathan’s hand dropped from my back as if the fabric of my dress had caught fire.

"What is this?" Nathan asked. His voice was dangerously quiet, stripped of all warmth.

Before I could speak, Nathan’s childhood friend, Camille, who worked for the Reed Family Office, pushed her way through the whispering crowd. She held a thick manila folder in her manicured hands and a triumphant smirk on her face.

"I think everyone deserves to know the truth before we keep pretending the Reeds have a spotless reputation," Camille said, raising her voice so every guest could hear. She slapped a document onto the cocktail table next to us. "That's a certified forensic analysis of the sheets from Grandview suite 1408. Traces of Avery’s DNA were recovered alongside Roman Hale’s."

Gasps rippled across the room. Before Camille could pull the document back, I took a quick photo of it with my phone.

"Nathan, listen to me," I said immediately, reaching out to touch his arm. "That footage is completely taken out of context."

Nathan didn't look at the paper. He didn't ask what happened. He simply stared down at me, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin.

"How many times did you sleep with him?" he asked.

The question hit me like cold water. "What? Nathan, no! That night, Roman had a severe anaphylactic reaction. The hotel manager called me because I was still downstairs closing out a Reed Foundation event, the on-site medic wasn't there, and he knew I had advanced emergency first aid certification. The house doctor was on a live video call guiding me the entire time!"

"A whole hour of CPR with the door locked?" Camille interrupted with a sharp laugh. "Please, Avery. If you were playing nurse, why did Roman answer the door in a towel? And more importantly..."

Camille turned to Nathan, dropping her voice to a theatrical whisper that still carried across the silent floor.

"Whose baby is she carrying?"

The words shattered whatever restraint was left in the room.

I grabbed Nathan’s sleeve with both hands. "Nathan, you know me. You know that's impossible! We did the genetic screening together three days ago! This is our baby!"

Nathan looked down at my hands clutching his jacket. His eyes were entirely black, filled with a cold, repulsed fury that terrified me.

"Don’t touch me with another man’s child," he said.

He ripped his arm away with such force that I stumbled back against the table.

Nathan spun around and strode toward the double doors leading to the grand staircase, ignoring his mother calling after him. The crowd parted around him like water.

Panic surged through me. I gathered the hem of my long white gown and ran after him. "Nathan! Stop! Talk to me!"

I caught up to him at the top of the marble landing. The staircase swept downward in two wide curves toward the main foyer below.

"Nathan, please!" I stepped in front of him, blocking his path, breathing hard. "Look at me. Look into my eyes and tell me. Do you really believe I would do this to you? Do you believe me or not?"

"Get out of my way, Avery," he snarled, his voice shaking with pure rage.

"No! Not until you answer me!" I reached for his lapels, desperate for him to see the truth in my face. "I took a vow. I love you. This child is yours!"

"I said get away from me!"

Nathan lost control and shoved both hands forward to throw me off.

The force of his push sent me reeling backward. My heel caught the edge of the top marble step.

The air vanished from my lungs as gravity dragged me down.

I tumbled violently down the hard stone steps, my head striking the iron banister before my body slammed down onto the marble landing halfway down.

A searing, blinding pain ripped through my lower abdomen.

I lay on the cold stone, unable to move, gasping for breath. Beneath the skirt of my white dress, a dark, heavy crimson began to spread, soaking through the silk in terrifying blooms of red.

"Nathan..." I choked out, reaching a trembling hand upward. "Nathan, help me..."

At the top of the stairs, Nathan froze. His face went stark white, the anger suddenly replaced by raw shock. He took one step down toward me, his hand reaching out.

"Nathan, stop!" Camille’s voice rang out sharply from behind him. "Don't fall for it! She's manipulating you again! Look at the theatrics!"

Nathan stopped. He looked at the blood pooling beneath me, then at Camille, and his foot stayed suspended in place. He didn't move another inch.

Heavy, hurried footsteps shattered the silence.

A figure vaulted down the steps past Nathan, moving so fast the air shifted. Strong arms slid beneath my back and knees, lifting me carefully from the stone.

"Call an ambulance! Now!" Roman Hale’s voice roared through the foyer, tight with fury and panic.

I looked up through blurred vision into Roman's tense, pale face. Behind him, high on the landing, Nathan stood completely still, watching us.

Then the pain swallowed me whole, and the world went black.

***

When I opened my eyes, the smell of antiseptic stung my nose.

The steady, rhythmic beep of a hospital monitor filled the quiet private room. Sunlight cut through the blinds, casting pale stripes across the white blanket over my legs.

A female doctor stood beside the bed, checking an IV drip. Seeing me stir, she stopped and looked down with an expression of quiet sympathy that instantly made my chest seize.

"Where is it?" I whispered, my voice cracked and dry. My hand instinctively dropped to my flat, empty stomach. "My baby..."

The doctor rested a gentle hand on my arm. "Mrs. Reed, I am so sorry. The trauma from the fall caused severe placental separation and hemorrhage. We had to perform emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. We couldn't save the pregnancy."

A hollow, agonizing silence rang in my ears. The baby was gone. The nursery they had talked about painting just hours earlier was meaningless now.

Tears spilled over my temples into my hair. "Nathan... where is Nathan? Is he outside?"

The doctor didn't answer. She exchanged an uneasy glance with the nurse standing near the door.

The nurse looked down at the floor, hesitating, then walked over to the nightstand. Without saying a word, she picked up my phone and placed it into my trembling palm. A breaking news alert from the city's largest financial outlet was already glowing on the lock screen, published twenty minutes ago:

*BREAKING: Reed Enterprises Heir Nathan Reed Officially Files for Divorce from Avery Reed, Citing Marital Infidelity and Fraud.*
