Elena's Point Of View
"Hey, birthday boy," I said, my voice rich with laughter and pride, "I just closed the Vandermere deal. Are you ready for me to come home and spoil you?"
A low, gravelly chuckle vibrated through the speaker, the sound instantly warming the small, enclosed space of my car. The familiar timbre of it sent a flutter through my chest... the same flutter I'd felt the first time we met.
"Always," Graham murmured, his voice dropping an octave, slipping into that slow, intimate register he reserved for moments when it was just the two of us. "But you're the one who deserves to be spoiled if you actually managed to pin Vandermere down. Did he give you a hard time?"
"Nothing I couldn't handle," I said, a faint, secret smirk touching my lips as I remembered the man groveling on the floor. The memory threatened to darken my mood, but I pushed it aside. I wasn't going to ruin tonight by telling him the ugly details. "Let's just say he signed exactly where I told him to. But enough about business. What are you doing right now?"
"Sitting on the edge of our bed, thinking about what you're wearing under that blazer."
My breath hitched instantly. A sudden, sharp ache bloomed between my thighs, and I instinctively pressed my knees together, rubbing them slightly as a flush crawled up my neck. The heat in his voice always had this effect on me, even after five years of marriage.
"Graham..."
"Are you wearing those lace ones? The black ones I bought you in London?" His voice became a deliberate silk drag, heavy with a heat that felt entirely too real for a phone call. "Because if you are, Elena, you need to pull over right now. Tell me what you're doing."
"Stop, Graham," I gasped out, my hand tightening on the steering wheel while the other pressed the phone hard against my ear. My breath came shallow now, my heart hammering against my ribs from the sheer, raw suggestion in his tone. The leather seat suddenly felt too warm beneath me. "I'm in the car. At least wait until I get home, and then I'll show you just how active I can be."
He chuckled again, a deep, satisfied sound that made my skin tingle and my toes curl inside my heels. "I'm going to hold you to that. And oh, baby? I also have a surprise for you."
My eyes lit up, the warmth in my chest expanding until it felt like it would burst. I loved surprises, especially from Graham. He had impeccable taste and always knew exactly what would make me smile. "Oh, really? For me? It's your birthday... you're not supposed to be giving me gifts."
"Trust me, this is something we've needed for a long time. It's going to change everything for us."
The cryptic words sent a pleasant shiver of anticipation down my spine. Change everything? Maybe he'd finally agreed to that vacation in Santorini I'd been suggesting, or perhaps he'd decided to take a step back from work like we'd discussed. Whatever it was, the promise in his voice made my heart race with excitement.
"I'll be home soon then," I said, unable to keep the sheer joy out of my voice. "Don't start without me."
"Drive fast, Elena."
I ended the call, letting my hand drop to my lap as I leaned back against the headrest. I stared out at the dark parking lot, a wide, utterly content smile plastered across my face. This was what happiness felt like - this warm, golden feeling that spread through my entire body.
"God, I love that man so much," I chuckled to myself, shaking my head as the residual heat from his words lingered under my skin.
I pulled the car into gear, the tires crunching over the gravel as I drove out into the Lagos traffic. My first stop was the bakery in Ikeja to pick up the three-tier red velvet cake I'd customized weeks ago. The baker had outdone herself... the cake was a masterpiece, decorated with delicate sugar flowers and Graham's favorite dark chocolate shavings.
Next came a quick run to a premium gourmet store for the specific ingredients needed for his favorite steak dinner: aged ribeye, fresh rosemary, imported butter, and those tiny fingerling potatoes he loved. Every errand felt effortless. I was operating on pure devotion, the kind of happy fatigue that only comes from loving someone with everything you have.
By the time I pulled through the heavy iron gates of the Sinclair Estate, the night had grown deep and quiet. The moon hung low over the palm trees, casting long shadows across the manicured lawn. I waved to the security guards at the gatehouse, driving up the long, winding palm-lined path that led to the main house. The familiar sight of our home... grand, elegant, a testament to everything we'd built together, filled me with pride.
The massive living room was completely empty when I stepped inside, the grand chandeliers dimmed to a soft, amber glow. The house staff had already retired to their quarters, leaving the space beautifully still and peaceful. Tucking the grocery bags under my arm, I carried the cake box into the kitchen and set it carefully onto the marble island. I'd put it in the fridge in a bit; right now, the heat from the drive and the promise in Graham's voice were the only things on my mind.
I walked upstairs, the sound of my heels muffled by the thick runner on the staircase. My pulse quickened with each step, anticipation building in my core. I shed my blazer on the way, tossing it over the banister with careless abandon.
"Baby? Graham?"
I walked into our shared bedroom. The lights were low, casting intimate shadows across the king-sized bed we'd picked out together in Milan. The distinct, steady hum of the shower ran behind the frosted glass door of the master bathroom. A wave of anticipation hit me, stronger now. I stripped out of my clothes, leaving them in a discarded pile on the floor, and stepped into the steam-filled bathroom. The mirror was completely fogged, the air thick and warm.
The glass door slid open with a soft click. Graham stood under the spray, his back to me, the water streaming down the broad, muscular lines of his shoulders. Even after all these years, the sight of him still took my breath away. I stepped inside, the hot water instantly hitting my skin, and reached around his waist, pressing my front against his warm, wet back as my hands slid over his chest.
He jerked away violently, his elbow almost clipping my chin as he spun around. "Fuck, Elena! Why would you do that?"
I stumbled back a step, startled by the sharpness in his voice and the wild look in his eyes. For a moment, he looked almost... guilty? But I quickly covered my confusion with a pout, stepping back into his space and wrapping my arms around his neck. "I wanted to give you a surprise. And I missed you," I whined, leaning my forehead against his wet chest, breathing in the familiar scent of his soap... sandalwood and cedar, the same brand he'd used since we met.
Graham stood rigid for a fraction of a second, his chest heaving as if he'd been running, before his posture finally softened. He let out a long breath, a slow smile pulling at his lips as he looked down at me. But something about that smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "You're going to give me a heart attack one of these days."
"Happy birthday," I whispered, pushing away the uneasy feeling that had briefly flickered through me.
He didn't answer with words. He grabbed my chin, tilting my face up, and slammed his mouth onto mine. The gentle kiss I expected instantly turned rough, starved, fueled by the heavy tension that had been building since our phone call. I groaned into his mouth, my fingers tangling deep into his wet hair as I returned the pressure, tasting the heat of him. There was something different about this kiss... something almost desperate, but I was too caught up in the moment to analyze it.
His large hands slid down my spine, gripping my waist before dipping lower to cup my ass. With a sudden, powerful hoist, he lifted me completely off the ground. I wrapped my legs tightly around his hips, my back pressing against the slick tile wall as the shower water drenched us both.
"Elena," he growled against my lips, his breath hot and ragged.
He didn't waste time. He guided himself to my opening, pressing firmly until he slid completely inside me with one deep, unyielding thrust. A loud, breathless gasp broke from my throat, my hands gripping his shoulders for dear life as the sheer fullness of him stretched me open.
"Graham, please," I whimpered, the friction of the water and his skin driving me wild.
He started moving, his thrusts hard and frantic against the wall. Every strike went deep, hitting that sweet, agonizing spot that made my toes curl and stars burst behind my eyelids. I bit down on his shoulder to muffle my screams, my fingers digging into his back as he drove us both higher and higher. The rhythm was feral, a chaotic symphony of splashing water and heavy, unvarnished panting.
He pulled my legs higher around his waist, burying himself completely into my heat, his jaw clenched in pure focus until he let out a low, guttural roar, coming hard inside me. The intense waves of his release triggered my own, a blinding, crashing climax that left me trembling violently against him, my entire body singing with pleasure.
By the time we finally walked out of the bathroom, wrapped in plush towels, I was utterly exhausted, my limbs heavy and trembling, but my stomach was rumbling violently. The physical exertion had left me ravenous.
After dressing in a simple, comfortable silk slip that felt cool against my flushed skin, we walked downstairs together to the dining table. I served the medium-rare steaks I'd quickly seared, the meat perfectly pink in the center just how he liked it, and we ate mostly in a quiet, comfortable rhythm, sharing a bottle of wine.
It felt perfect. It felt like the marriage I had spent five years nurturing, protecting, and pouring my entire heart into.
When we finished, I gathered the empty plates and carried them to the kitchen. I turned on the faucet, washing the grease from the plates, feeling a deep sense of accomplishment wash over me along with the warm water. Everything was right with the world. I had a successful career, a beautiful home, and a husband I adored. What more could anyone ask for?
I dried my hands on a kitchen towel and walked over to the island, about to lift the cake box to finally put it away in the fridge.
Heavy footsteps sounded behind me. Graham entered the kitchen, his bare feet silent on the tile. He stepped up right behind me, his large arms wrapping securely around my waist as he buried his face into the crook of my neck, planting a soft, lingering kiss right on my pulse point. The gesture was so tender, so familiar, that it made my heart swell.
I giggled, leaning back into his solid chest, savoring the warmth and security of his embrace. "What is it, birthday boy? Let me finish what I'm doing so we can go back upstairs."
Graham didn't laugh. His grip on my waist tightened for a second... almost painfully, and then, slowly, he pulled his arms away completely. The sudden absence of his warmth made the kitchen feel instantly freezing, as if someone had opened all the windows to let in the night air.
I turned around to look at him, a bright, easy smile still playing on my lips, though a small knot of worry had begun to form in my stomach. "What is it, baby?"
Graham stood beneath the harsh fluorescent light of the kitchen island, his hands shoved deep into his sweatpants pockets. His face was entirely devoid of the heat from the shower, or the softness from dinner. He looked detached. Cold. Like a stranger wearing my husband's face. The transformation was so complete, so sudden, that my smile froze on my lips.
"I have to tell you something," he said, his voice flat, completely stripped of inflection.
"Okay..." My smile faltered, then died completely. My brow furrowed at the sudden shift in the room's energy. The air felt thick, oppressive, as if a storm was gathering overhead. "You're acting weird. What's the surprise?"
He looked me dead in the eye, his gaze steady, unblinking, and utterly merciless. In that moment, I saw no trace of the man who had just made love to me in the shower, no hint of the husband who had laughed with me over dinner. This was someone else entirely.
"Let's have an open marriage, Elena."
