Rejected While My Mate Saved Another Woman's Life

The journey took four days.

Four days of shifting between forms—Ember's white wolf when the terrain was wild and empty, human skin when I had to pass through the edges of populated pack lands where a massive she-wolf would draw too much attention. Four days of learning to work with a consciousness that had spent my entire life compressed inside me, waiting.

Ember wanted the shortcut through the rogue-adjacent border zone on the second night. I felt her pushing toward it—instinct and scent telling her it was faster, cleaner, a straight line through territory no pack controlled. I overrode her.

"We take the long route," I said aloud. My voice sounded strange after days of silence. "Half a day longer. Safer."

Heat pulsed through my chest. Not anger exactly. Frustration. The wolf equivalent of *why*.

"Because if we get caught in rogue territory carrying stolen evidence logs, we don't make it to the Summit," I said. "And if we don't make it to the Summit, none of this matters."

The heat pulsed again. Then settled.

She didn't agree. But she accepted.

That was how we learned. Not seamlessly. Not like the stories where wolf and human moved as one perfect unit. We negotiated. She had instincts I didn't. I had strategy she couldn't see yet. We were partners, not pieces of the same thing.

On the fourth morning, I reached the outskirts of Summit territory.

I found a stream before dawn. The water was cold enough to sting. I knelt beside it and cleaned the evidence logs carefully, wiping away the dried blood from the awakening transformation, the dirt from four days of travel. The pages were intact. Every timestamp. Every seal. Every routing notation in Alonzo's square handwriting.

I reviewed them one final time against my memorized record. Injection one. Injection two. The increased dosage on the seventh day with no notation change. The authorization header repeating at the top of every page: BY ORDER OF ALPHA DILLON, IRONRIDGE PACK. The red wax seal pressed firm and clean.

It matched. All of it.

I set the logs on a flat stone to dry and began rehearsing.

Aloud. Alone in the pre-dawn dark. The same way I'd recited evidence in the silver cell.

"I invoke the Luna Accord. I am Scarlett, formally rejected mate of Alpha Dillon of the Ironridge Pack. The rejection was witnessed by no fewer than ten pack members. I invoke my right to a public tribunal before the assembled Alphas."

No performance. No sentiment. Word by word.

"I present evidence of deliberate healer withdrawal during a critical healing ritual, resulting in the death of Emily, my mother. I present evidence of unlawful imprisonment under false declaration of feral status. I present evidence of systematic wolfsbane suppression intended to prevent legal appeal."

My voice didn't shake. It was the voice of someone who had spent seven days in a silver cell memorizing every word that would matter when the moment came.

Ember listened in silence.

When I finished, she sent a single pulse of heat through my sternum. Not encouragement. Just presence. *I am here.*

I pressed my thumb to my wrist. Counted to three. Stood up.

---

I scouted the Summit hall's exterior as the sun rose.

The building was massive—old stone, high windows, the kind of architecture that announced its own importance. I mapped the exits. The guard positions. The seating arrangement of the delegations visible through the main entrance. I could see Dillon's position in the Ironridge section. Alonzo beside him. I could see the Lycan royal dais—elevated, centered, the throne occupied.

I located the formal floor position from which petitioners traditionally spoke. Center of the hall. Exposed. Visible to every Alpha in the room.

The Luna Accord invocation required only a voice and a witnessed rejection vow. I had both.

I also had approximately thirty seconds.

Thirty seconds between the moment I walked through those doors and the moment Dillon or Alonzo or any of the guards recognized me and acted. Thirty seconds to reach the center of the floor and speak the words that would force the Summit to halt.

Thirty seconds was enough.

I straightened the evidence logs under my arm. Pressed my thumb to my wrist one more time. My pulse was steady.

I walked to the entrance.

The doors were heavy. Carved wood reinforced with iron. I pushed them open.

---

The moment I crossed the threshold, the air in the hall changed.

I felt it before I saw the reaction. A shift in pressure. Heads turning. The assembled Alphas registering something in my scent that didn't belong to an Omega-status she-wolf. Something Ember's awakened presence had unleashed—something that carried weight, carried power, carried a blood-marker I didn't yet understand but they could smell.

On the elevated dais, a man went completely still.

Lycan Prince Kael. I knew him from his position, from the sigil ring on his right hand that he turned once, slowly, his eyes locked on me. His posture was absolute control—no movement, no reaction—but his stillness was louder than anything else in the room.

He knew.

I didn't look at him.

I looked across the hall to the Ironridge section. Dillon sat in the front row, Hayley beside him, Alonzo at his shoulder. The moment Dillon saw me, his entire body went rigid. The smooth Alpha confidence drained from his posture in stages—first his shoulders, then his jaw, then his hands where they gripped the armrests of his chair.

Hayley's hand rose to the base of her throat.

I didn't look at either of them for more than a second.

I walked directly to the center of the floor.

My footsteps echoed. The hall was silent except for that—the sound of my boots on stone, the rustle of the evidence logs under my arm, my own heartbeat in my ears.

I reached the center.

I stopped.

I looked up at the Lycan King on his throne.

Then I opened my mouth and spoke the words I'd rehearsed in the dark.

"I invoke the Luna Accord."

My voice carried. Clear. Steady. No performance.

"I am Scarlett, formally rejected mate of Alpha Dillon of the Ironridge Pack. The rejection was witnessed by no fewer than ten pack members on the night of the new moon, seven days past. I invoke my right to demand a public tribunal before the assembled Alphas."

The hall erupted.

Voices overlapping. Chairs scraping. Dillon on his feet, his face white. Alonzo reaching for him. The Lycan King raising one hand—not speaking, just raising it—and the noise cutting off like a severed cord.

The King's eyes moved to me.

Then his head tilted. Just slightly. Like he was catching a scent.

His entire body went rigid.

He stood.

Slowly. Deliberately. The kind of movement that made every wolf in the room freeze.

He stepped down from the dais. One step. Two. His eyes never left my face.

Then he spoke.

One word.

Not a command. Not a question.

A name I had never heard before in my life.

"Lyria."
