Chapter 1 of Rejected Mate's Primordial Rise

The warrior trials had been going on for hours, and my muscles screamed in protest with each new opponent. I wiped sweat from my brow, watching as my latest challenger—a hulking Delta from the Northern Pack—circled me like a predator sizing up wounded prey.

"You're quick, little wolf," he growled, "but you lack strength."

I refused to let his words penetrate my defenses. Two years of relentless training had prepared me for this moment. I might not have the brute force of some warriors, but I had something else—determination.

When he lunged, I sidestepped, using his momentum against him. My counterstrike connected with his ribs, but the impact reverberated up my arm. Pain shot through my shoulder as I staggered back.

"Nice move," Marcus whispered from the sidelines, my training partner since childhood. "But save some energy. There are three more after him."

I nodded, forcing myself to breathe through the discomfort. Around us, members of three allied packs watched from the ceremonial clearing—the Pacific Northwest territories united for this biannual showcase of our finest warriors. My pack needed me to prove myself.

The next two challengers tested me further. Each victory came at greater cost, my movements growing heavier, my reactions slower. By the time the fifth warrior stepped forward—a massive Beta with scars crisscrossing his chest—I knew I was outmatched.

"Yield," someone called from the crowd. "Save yourself the humiliation, Savannah."

Humiliation. The word burned worse than any physical pain. I straightened my spine, meeting my opponent's gaze.

"I don't yield," I said, my voice steadier than I felt.

The Beta charged. I managed to dodge his first attack, but his second caught me square in the chest. The force sent me sprawling backward, tasting blood where I'd bitten my tongue.

"Enough," declared Alpha Victor Cross, Spencer's father and head of our pack. "Savannah Miller has demonstrated sufficient skill for one day."

His tone held no pride, only impatience. I struggled to my feet, shame burning hotter than the ceremonial fires surrounding the clearing.

The trials ended as twilight descended. Warriors who had proven themselves gathered in the sacred bonding circle—an ancient tradition where pack members sometimes discovered their mates through supernatural connection.

I lingered at the edge, knowing my performance had only reinforced what everyone already thought: Savannah Miller—too weak to be truly valuable.

"Perhaps next year," Marcus said gently, squeezing my shoulder.

I shook my head. "There won't be a next year. I'm twenty-three. If I haven't found my place by now—"

A sudden hush fell over the gathering. The air itself seemed to thicken, heavy with something ancient and powerful.

"What's happening?" I whispered.

Marcus frowned. "I don't know. The bonding circle hasn't activated in years."

But something was stirring. A tingling sensation began at my fingertips, spreading up my arms like electricity. My wolf, normally quiet unless I was shifting, suddenly howled within me—a desperate, yearning cry that made me gasp.

*MATE.*

The word echoed through my consciousness, impossible yet undeniable. My gaze swept the circle until it locked with a pair of startled amber eyes.

Spencer Evans. The future Alpha. The man who had barely acknowledged my existence despite years of training alongside him.

He stood frozen, his expression a mixture of shock and something else—something that looked almost like horror.

The tingling intensified, becoming a current that seemed to flow between us. With it came a scent—cedar and storm—that wrapped around me like a physical caress. My wolf howled again, more insistent.

*MATE. OURS.*

Spencer took a step toward me, then stopped abruptly as whispers rippled through the crowd.

"It's Savannah Miller," someone hissed. "But she's one of the weakest warriors."

"Not strong enough to stand beside an Alpha," another voice added.

I saw Spencer's father move to his side, leaning close to whisper something in his ear. Spencer's face hardened, his eyes darting between me and his father.

The connection between us pulsed, undeniable and overwhelming. For a brief, wild moment, I allowed myself to hope.

Then Spencer straightened his shoulders and stepped forward into the center of the circle.

"I feel it too," he announced, his voice carrying across the hushed gathering. "But I cannot accept this bond."

The words hit me like physical blows. Each syllable drained color from the world.

"I, Spencer Evans," he continued formally, "reject you, Savannah Miller, as my mate."

Gasps echoed around us. Rejection was rare—painful and dangerous for both parties, but especially for the rejected.

"You're too weak to stand beside an Alpha," Spencer declared, each word a dagger to my heart. "Too weak to be Luna of this pack."

My knees buckled as something tore inside me—a physical pain that matched the emotional devastation. My wolf howled in agony, retreating deep within me as if trying to escape the rejection.

As darkness edged my vision, I heard Spencer's voice, distant and cold:

"This bonding is denied."
