Elara Vance POV:
The Moon Goddess Falls was a breathtaking sight. A cascade of water thundered down a sheer rock face, crashing into a crystal-clear pool below. The mist caught the light of the full moon, creating a halo of shimmering rainbows. All the unmated wolves of the pack were gathered around a large, flat sacred stone at the edge of the pool, their faces a mixture of hope and anxiety.
Ruby and I found a spot near the back of the crowd. My hands were ice-cold, and I kept wringing them together. My gaze was drawn, against my will, to the front. There stood Ryker, looking every bit the powerful Alpha he was destined to be. And clinging to his arm, looking smug and proprietary, was Seraphina.
The Pack Elder, a wizened old wolf with kind eyes, stepped onto the sacred stone and began the ancient rite. He chanted in the old tongue, his voice rising and falling in a hypnotic rhythm, calling upon the Moon Goddess to bless her children and reveal their true mates.
A palpable energy descended upon the clearing. It was a warm, tingling sensation that swept through the crowd, a wave of pure magic. I felt it seep into my skin, a strange and wonderful feeling I had never experienced before. I, the girl with no wolf, was feeling the Goddess’s power.
And then, it happened.
My head snapped up, my gaze pulled by an invisible string. It shot across the crowd, past dozens of faces, and locked onto Ryker.
At the exact same moment, his head whipped around, his own stormy eyes finding mine with unerring accuracy. The look on his face was one of pure, unadulterated shock.
The world went silent. The roar of the waterfall, the chanting of the Elder, the whispers of the crowd—it all faded away to nothing. There was only him. His scent of forest and storm flooded my senses, intoxicating and overwhelming. It was a siren’s call to my very soul.
I saw his jaw clench, his knuckles go white. I knew, with a certainty that defied all logic, that his inner wolf was roaring, screaming a single, possessive word. *Mine.*
As if to confirm it, a brilliant beam of silver moonlight broke through the canopy of trees. It descended from the heavens and enveloped us both, a shining column of light that bound us together for all the pack to see.
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
“No!” Seraphina’s shriek was a raw, ugly sound of pure fury. “It’s impossible! She’s a wolfless freak!”
The Elder stared, momentarily stunned, before his voice rang out, filled with awe. “The Moon Goddess has made her choice! The fated mate of Ryker Blackwood is… Elara Vance!”
My mind went blank. A tidal wave of joy, so immense it was terrifying, washed over me. It was real. The Goddess had heard me. She had chosen me.
But then I looked at Ryker.
The joy in my heart turned to ash. The shock on his face had morphed into a mask of pure disgust and rage. This wasn't a blessing to him; it was a curse. A public humiliation.
He shoved his way through the stunned crowd, his movements violent and angry. He didn’t stop until he was standing in front of me. He grabbed my arm, his fingers digging into my flesh like talons, and dragged me forward, pulling me onto the sacred stone beside him.
He stood before the entire pack, his chest heaving with fury, and he began the formal words of the ritual. His voice was a low, trembling growl.
“I, Ryker Blackwood, future Alpha of the Shadowmoon Pack…”
He paused, his gray eyes boring into mine, each word a shard of ice.
“…reject you, Elara Vance, as my mate!”
A pain unlike anything I had ever known exploded in my soul. It was a physical tearing, a ripping sensation as if my very essence was being rent in two.
Ryker let out a choked gasp, his own face paling to a ghostly white. He was feeling it too. The severing of a sacred bond. But he stood his ground, his eyes blazing with defiance.
The Elder looked at me, his face full of pity. “Child,” he whispered, his voice shaking. “The rite must be completed. You must… respond.”
I looked at the man I had loved my entire life, the man who had just publicly destroyed me. Tears streamed down my face, blurring his handsome, cruel face. I gathered the last of my strength, the last of my shattered pride, and spoke the most painful words I would ever utter.
“I, Elara Vance… accept your rejection.”
The moment the words left my lips, the world dissolved into blackness. The last thing I felt was the cold, hard stone rushing up to meet me.
