Chapter 1 of Rejected By My Alpha Mate

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Thursday night.

I felt it snap before I saw him—a cold fracture that started at the base of my skull and spread down my spine like ice water. My mate mark burned white-hot for three seconds, then went dead. Not numb. Dead. Like someone had carved out the space where it used to live and left nothing but a hollow.

I was standing in the doorway of the Shadowvale pack house. Every torch was lit. The entire pack stood in formal witness formation, two hundred wolves in their finest clothes, arranged in perfect rows. At the front, Kingston stood beside Cassidy Rose at the altar.

He was mid-sentence.

"—reject you, Adaline Thorne, daughter of the Crescent Line, as my fated mate and Luna of this pack."

His voice carried across the hall. Formal. Final. He didn't stumble over my name.

I had walked three miles through the forest to get here. My feet were bleeding inside my torn shoes. My clothes—the same ones I'd been wearing for a year—hung off my frame like rags. I could feel my ribs pressing against the fabric. My hair was matted. My wrists still had the silver burns from the chains.

The pack turned to stare.

I looked at Kingston. He looked at me.

For one second, I thought I saw something flicker in his eyes. Recognition, maybe. Or shock.

Then his expression hardened.

Cassidy's hand tightened on his arm. She was wearing white—a Luna ceremony gown, lace and silk, the kind I used to help pick out for other mated pairs. Her face was soft, concerned, perfectly composed. But her eyes met mine for half a breath, and I saw it.

She wasn't surprised.

She had known I would come back.

My wolf stirred once, a faint pulse of fury deep in my chest—and then went silent. Not the kind of silence that comes before a storm. The kind that comes after everything has already burned.

"Adaline." Kingston's voice cut through the hall. Not warm. Not relieved. Just my name, flat and cold.

I tried to speak. My throat closed.

"You're interrupting a sacred ceremony," he said.

The Alpha tone slammed into me like a fist to the sternum. It wasn't a suggestion. It was a command, layered with the full weight of his authority, and it crushed the words back down my throat. My spine went rigid. My knees locked. I couldn't move.

He looked at me—really looked, for the first time—and his gaze swept over the scars on my arms, the hollow of my cheeks, the way my collarbone jutted sharp beneath my shirt.

His mouth tightened.

"You abandoned this pack," he said. His voice was steady. Certain. "You left without word. Without explanation. You shamed us with your weakness."

I stared at him.

He believed it. I could see it in his face. He actually believed I had run.

"The ceremony is complete," Kingston continued. He turned back to Cassidy, and his hand covered hers on his arm. "My word is final."

The pack murmured. A few wolves near the back shifted their weight, uncomfortable. Most just watched.

Cassidy stepped closer to Kingston. She rested her head against his shoulder, and he didn't pull away.

My hands were shaking. I pressed my left palm over my mate mark—the hollow, dead space on my neck—and felt nothing. No warmth. No pull. Just cold skin.

Something inside me went very, very still.

I didn't beg. I didn't cry. I turned and walked out of the hall, my footsteps silent on the stone floor.

Behind me, I heard Kingston's voice resume the ceremony. Smooth. Untroubled.

I made it to the corridor before my knees buckled. I caught myself against the wall, one hand braced on the cold stone, and breathed through my nose until the shaking stopped.

Then I went to find my son.

***

The Omega kennels were beneath the main building, down two flights of stairs I used to walk past without thinking. The air smelled like damp stone and old fear.

I found Kason in the third cell.

He was curled on a thin mat in the corner, his knees pulled to his chest. He wore a silver collar. It was too tight. The skin around his neck was raw, blistered, weeping in places where the metal had burned too long.

He was so small.

I knelt in the doorway. My hands were steady. I made sure they were steady.

"Kason," I whispered.

He flinched. His head jerked up, and his eyes—too big in his thin face—locked on mine.

For three seconds, he didn't move.

Then his mouth opened.

"Mama?"

His voice cracked on the word.

I crossed the cell in two steps and pulled him into my arms. He was lighter than he should have been. I could feel every bone in his back through his shirt. He didn't cry. He just pressed his face against my shoulder and breathed in short, shallow gasps, like he was afraid to make noise.

"I've got you," I said quietly. "I've got you."

He nodded against my neck.

I looked at the silver collar. At the burns. At the way his hands trembled when he tried to grip my shirt.

Something deep inside me—something that had nothing to do with the dead mate bond or my silent wolf—ignited into a cold, absolute flame.

I stood, lifting Kason with me. He wrapped his legs around my waist and buried his face in my hair.

"We're leaving," I said.

I carried him up the stairs, through the empty corridors, past the hall where the ceremony was still going. No one stopped me. No one even looked.

In the Omega quarters, I set Kason on the narrow cot and knelt in front of him. His eyes followed me, wary and too old.

"I need you to sleep," I said. "Just for a little while. Can you do that?"

He nodded.

I waited until his breathing evened out, until his small body finally relaxed into the mattress. Then I pulled out the old burner phone I'd kept hidden in my shoe for the last three miles.

I had one contact left. One channel I'd maintained as Luna, back when I'd handled Shadowvale's border negotiations with the Blood Crown Court.

I composed the message carefully. No desperation. No plea.

Just an offer.

*Shadowvale border patrol rotations. Territorial vulnerabilities. Political intelligence from a former Luna who knows every crack in this pack's foundation. In exchange: sanctuary and extraction for two.*

I hesitated for half a second.

Then I hit send.

The message went out into the dark. I set the phone down and pressed my hand over the dead mate mark on my neck one more time.

It was the first move I'd made from strength since I came back.

And it wouldn't be the last.
