Omega No More: The White Wolf of Wintermoon

Elara POV

The morning mist was thick and tasted of wet pine needles as I walked through the sleeping village.

I pulled my thin wool cloak tighter around my shoulders, heading toward the grand stone manor that belonged to the Alpha's bloodline.

The severe lines of the gothic architecture cut long, sharp-edged shadows across the cobblestones, giving the estate the brooding aspect of some great, dormant beast.

I stopped near the side garden, hiding behind a row of thick rosebushes.

Through the large stained glass window, I could see the warm glow of a roaring fireplace.

Kaelen was sitting at a heavy oak table with his mother, the current Luna of our pack.

They were eating chunks of raw, bloody venison from silver platters, tearing into the meat with their teeth.

I took a step forward, intending to knock on the heavy wooden door and hand over the letters.

But my enhanced hearing caught the sound of Kaelen's deep voice filtering through the glass.

I froze, pressing my back against the cold stone wall of the manor.

The Luna placed her silver goblet on the table with a firm, deliberate click. "You changed your military pact to the Border Guard without consulting your mate," she stated, her voice edged with disapproval. "Why, Kaelen? You made a promise to Elara."

I heard a low, defensive growl vibrate in Kaelen's chest. The legs of his chair scraped against the floor as he pushed back from the table, his voice tightening with irritation as he began to pace.

"I am not tethered to her," he snapped, the words coated in arrogance. "I need to build my own legacy, and the border is where true warriors are forged. I cannot be stuck in the capital playing at politics."

"Then you take her with you!" his mother insisted. "She is your mate."

Kaelen let out a short, harsh laugh, his broad shadow stretching and contracting across the floorboards. "And have her do what? She hasn't even Shifted," he bit out, the contempt in his tone a palpable thing. "Bring a weak, unshifted Omega to the border? I'd be a laughingstock. She is useless to me out there."

Every word he spoke felt like a heavy stone crushing my ribs, making it hard to draw breath.

I remembered the night under the old oak tree, where he had held my hands and promised to protect me for the rest of his life.

I realized then that the mouth of an Alpha was filled with nothing but beautiful, poisonous lies.

My inner wolf, dormant and frail as she was, howled at the betrayal—a sensation like sinew tearing deep within my chest.

But beneath the pain, something else stirred. Something cold. Ancient. Still unnamed.

I looked down at my hands, half-expecting to see frost spreading across my fingers.

There was nothing there. Not yet.

But the cold remained. And for the first time in my life, it felt less like a wound and more like a weapon.

I bit down hard on my lower lip, tasting the metallic tang of my own blood to keep from making a sound.

I waited until Kaelen stood up, grabbing his heavy fur cloak to leave for his morning patrol.

Moving quickly and silently, I slipped up to the stone windowsill.

I placed the stack of his secret letters on the cold ledge, right where he would find them.

Before leaving, I grabbed a handful of wet mud and crushed pine needles, rubbing them over my wrists and neck.

It was a survival trick I had learned in the woods, a way to deaden my natural scent to the sensitive noses of high-ranking wolves.

I turned and fled into the mist, my bare feet making no sound on the damp grass.

From that morning on, I became a ghost in my own pack.

I kept my scent constantly masked with mud and herbs, ensuring Kaelen could never track me down.

I never walked the same paths he did, and if I saw his tall figure in the village square, I immediately turned the other way.

A few days later, I felt a strange buzzing in my head.

Kaelen had noticed our mate bond growing weak and cold.

He began to spam the Mind-Link, sending me dozens of messages asking where I was and why I was hiding.

Elara, answer me. Where are you? his voice echoed in my mind, sounding frustrated and demanding.

But he never once mentioned the letters I had left on his windowsill.

He was a coward, hiding behind his Alpha pride, too guilty to admit his own cruelty.

I kept my mental walls up, ignoring every single call.

The night the military trial results were posted, the village lit huge bonfires to celebrate the young warriors.

I stayed in my cellar, avoiding the noise, until the heavy wooden door of our cottage swung open.

Kaelen had come to my home, his tall frame filling the doorway, bringing the scent of rain and dark earth with him.

My parents and Thorne immediately rushed to greet him, bowing their heads and offering him our best ale.

They fawned over him, their voices dripping with greed, hoping his Alpha status would elevate our family's miserable standing.

We all sat around the small hearth, the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife.

Thorne drank too much ale and started laughing, pointing a greasy finger at me.

He told Kaelen that an Omega like me would never survive the military, and that Seraphina was the only female fit to stand beside an Alpha.

I gripped the edges of my wooden stool, waiting to see what my betrothed mate would do.

Kaelen took a slow sip of his ale, not looking at me.

"Every wolf has their own path," he said smoothly, offering a diplomatic smile. "And Seraphina is indeed a skilled fighter."

He let the ensuing silence stretch and fester in the air, punctuated only by Thorne's brutish laughter. He took another slow draught of ale, and each deliberate swallow was a tacit endorsement of my humiliation.

Sitting there in the dim light, surrounded by my own family and the male who claimed to be mine, I had never felt more entirely alone.
