Rachel Summers was finally released from the police station. She was suffocating and had no time to react when she received a call from her hometown.
Her mother was yelling at her on the phone. “Who did you offend? Our house back home was bombed to the ground. I took my relatives to the police, but they had all sorts of documents! I was finally starting to have hope! Now it’s gone! I don’t care! You have to give me my house back!”
Rachel’s mother burst into tears. Before Michael Carter could even try to be nice, the neighborhood committee called.
“Jacob’s mom, when are you coming to pick him up? Jacob has been taking turns staying here for ten days. If you don’t come, we’re going to sue you for abandonment.”
Michael’s expression froze. Then, his defenses completely collapsed.
“Abandoned who? Who the hell are you talking about?”
Rachel tried to soothe her mother. “Mom, I’ll definitely take care of this for you.”
Before she could finish, she heard Michael roaring, “I have things to do. I’m hanging up now.”
When Rachel and Michael rushed to the neighborhood committee to pick up Jacob, he was crying so hard his nose was bubbling. “Mom and Dad, I was kicked out. The school doesn’t want me. I can’t go home. Why is that?”
Jacob burst into tears, and Michael followed suit, yelling: “It must be that bastard Daniel Wright! It must be Daniel! What right did he have to kick my son out!”
Rachel’s face turned cold.
When I got Rachel’s call, I was sitting with her business partner over tea. The partner enthusiastically poured me some tea and asked, “Mr. Wright, how did you find the time to come in person?”
The partner’s tone was flattering. “Last time, you asked us to inject funds into your wife’s project and fully support it. We’ve done exactly as you asked. Is there anything else you’re not happy with?”
Cup of hot tea in hand, I watched Rachel call and pressed the speakerphone button.
Rachel, furious, yelled at me: “Daniel Wright! Who dared you to leave Jacob homeless? I’m telling you, get over here and fix this! You were the one who got my house demolished back home. Don’t think I don’t know. You’re doing this to make me change my ways! Daniel! Your tactics are so despicable. They only make me look down on you! Do you really think just having a few bucks at home is enough? Even if I divorce you, I’ll still be fine. Don’t you know that? I’m going to get a promotion after this project is finished! If you keep going against me, be careful—I’ll sign the divorce papers!”
I smiled silently at my partner. I gently placed the tea I was holding on the table, leaving some stains on the rim.
My partner shuddered and quickly distanced himself from the matter, becoming my mouthpiece as I lashed out at Rachel. “Rachel Summers! Who gave you the guts to speak to Mr. Wright like that? Since you’re so disrespectful to Mr. Wright, then starting today, our cooperation is completely terminated!”
