Chapter 1 of My Son's Secret Father Is Next Door

Grace's POV

I dropped the final crate of my children's book manuscripts onto the dusty floorboards of the farmhouse my late aunt Evelyn had left me.

"Jamie, stop!" I yelled, chasing a flash of his blue jacket through the splintered gap in the backyard fence.

He was already trespassing on Mercer Ranch.

Six years ago, I stood in this exact farmhouse hallway and pressed a positive pregnancy test into Rowan Mercer's palm. He had brushed his thumb over the brass horseshoe nailed to the doorframe, swearing he would return the next morning to arrange doctors and our future. I had canceled my Tulsa art studio lease that same night, ready to fold my entire life into his ranch.

Now, a canceled publishing contract and skyrocketing rent had forced me back to this dilapidated house. I only wanted to patch the roof before storm season.

I scrambled through the broken cedar slats, the rough wood scraping my forearm.

"Jamie, get back here!"

A chestnut pony reared up, its hooves slicing the air inches from my five-year-old son.

Rowan snatched Jamie by the waist, swinging him out of the strike zone.

Before I could scream, the pony let out a sharp, pathetic whine. Rowan and I both snapped our attention to its left hind leg. It hovered above the dirt, trembling.

"I just wanted to pet him," Jamie whispered, his voice shaking.

"You don't sneak up on animals, kid," Rowan said.

He didn't look at the horse. His gaze locked onto Jamie.

"How old is he?" Rowan asked.

I snatched my son from his grip, pulling him firmly against my hip. "Five."

Rowan’s eyes narrowed, scanning the boy's face. He cataloged the shape of Jamie's jaw, the slope of his nose. "Who is the father, Grace?"

"My ex-husband, Miles," I lied smoothly.

Rowan stepped closer, his work boots grinding into the dry earth. He studied Jamie's storm-gray eyes, then looked at me.

"Who is the father, Grace?"

"I told you. Miles Holloway."

"The man you married after you left Oklahoma?"

My pulse kicked. Rowan had always remembered dates too well. "Yes."

Jamie squirmed out of my arms before I could stop him. He crouched beside the injured pony, careful this time to stay beyond the reach of its hooves. "He's hurting."

Rowan's attention shifted to the animal. He ran a practiced hand down the pony's leg, stopping above the fetlock. "Probably a stone bruise, maybe a strained tendon. Don't touch until I get him settled."

Jamie nodded with grave concentration. "He made the scared sound before he kicked."

Rowan looked up sharply. "You heard that?"

"The little breath." Jamie demonstrated, a soft click deep in his throat. "Mom doesn't hear it."

I did. I just had never understood it. Rowan had once told me horses warned you with their breathing before their bodies moved. Hearing the same instinct come out of my son felt like watching a locked door swing open.

"Jamie, back through the fence," I said.

He obeyed, though he glanced over his shoulder at the pony twice. Rowan waited until my son disappeared into Aunt Evelyn's yard before speaking again.

"Miles has gray eyes?"

"This conversation is over."

"Miles knew horses before he could read?"

"Stop."

Rowan's mouth tightened. Six years ago, that expression had meant he was trying not to say something reckless. Today it only made me want distance.

"You show up next door with a five-year-old who looks like my family and expect me not to ask?"

"I came back because Evelyn left me the farmhouse and my publisher canceled a contract. I did not come back for you."

"I didn't say you did."

"Your face did."

The porch screen slapped behind us. Jamie appeared with a plastic cup of water and held it through the gap in the fence. "For the pony."

Rowan accepted it as if the cup were something valuable. "Thanks, kid. I'll make sure he gets it."

Jamie beamed. The resemblance in that instant was worse than the eyes. Rowan's rare smile had always begun on one side, reluctant and crooked. Jamie smiled exactly the same way.

I caught my son's hand. "Inside."

We made it three steps before an SUV rolled down the Mercer drive. I recognized Diane Mercer before the vehicle stopped. Rowan's mother stepped out in cream slacks and a pressed blouse, untouched by the dust around her. Six years had silvered her hair but had not softened the expression that once made me feel like a trespasser in every room she entered.

Her gaze found me, then Jamie. She stopped walking.

"Grace Holloway," she said. "I heard Evelyn's place had a new occupant."

"Then your sources are accurate." I kept Jamie behind my hip.

Diane's eyes moved over his face with clinical precision. "And this is Miles's boy?"

"Yes."

Rowan's attention snapped to his mother. "You knew she was back?"

"The county records the transfer of property." Diane turned to me. "Some families pay attention to paperwork before making life-changing decisions."

The old wound opened so fast I almost laughed. "Interesting choice of words."

Diane's expression remained polished. "You made your choice six years ago. You took thirty thousand dollars from the clinic arrangement and left."

Jamie looked up at me. "What money?"

"Go inside, sweetheart."

"But--"

"Now."

He hesitated, then ran toward the farmhouse. I waited until the screen door shut behind him.

"Say that again," I told Diane.

"You heard me."

"I never took money from you, from Rowan, or from any clinic."

Rowan frowned. "Grace."

I turned on him. "What exactly did she tell you?"

His eyes stayed on mine. "That you went to a clinic in Tulsa. That you signed a receipt for thirty thousand dollars and left the next day."

For a moment the ranch, the fence, and Diane's immaculate blouse seemed to tilt sideways. I had spent six years believing Rowan had sent one brutal text and refused every call. He had spent six years believing I had taken money to end our child.

"I was in Boulder that day," I said.

Diane gave a short laugh. "Convenient."

"I can prove it."

Rowan looked at his mother. "Do you still have the receipt?"

"Of course."

"Bring it."

Diane's confidence flickered for the first time. "There is no reason to reopen--"

"Bring it," he repeated.

She went back to the SUV and pulled a folded photocopy from a leather document case. Rowan took it without speaking. I saw my name at the bottom in blue ink, the first letter wrong in a way only I would notice.

I pointed toward Evelyn's farmhouse. "Inside. Both of you. I have six years of records in a crate, and if someone forged my name, we are going to look at every line."

Diane did not move. Rowan did.

As he crossed through the broken fence, he looked once at the porch where Jamie had disappeared, then down at the false signature in his hand.

For the first time since I came home, neither of us was arguing about the past. We were staring at proof that somebody had built it for us.
