Chapter 1 of My Son Wished for a New Mom on His Birthday

"Look at the size of that thing!" a voice roared over the party chatter.

I pushed through the swinging kitchen doors, carrying the dye-free Stegosaurus cake I had spent two nights making.

In the living room, my husband, Noah, stood beside his friend Paige. Together, they hoisted a massive, two-thousand-dollar remote-control T-Rex above their heads.

"Roar for Aunt Paige, buddy!" Noah shouted, his face flushed with laughter.

Our six-year-old son, Milo, jumped up and down, his sneakers grinding cake crumbs into the undyed wool rug.

"Noah, the rug," I said, my voice cutting through the noise. "I just laid that down this morning."

Noah didn't look at me.

"I want to drive it! Give me the controller!" Milo yelled, reaching up.

"Hold on, birthday boy," Noah said, lowering the toy and handing the heavy remote to our son. "First, we do candles."

"I spent all week checking labels and removing dye-containing food," I said, stepping closer. "You know how bad his synthetic-dye allergies get."

Paige finally turned her head. She offered a tight, glossy smile. "Oh, stop worrying for five minutes. It's his birthday. Let the kid have fun."

"Fun doesn't mean an EpiPen trip to the ER," I replied.

"He's fine," Noah interrupted. He pulled a lighter from his pocket. "Bring the cake over here."

"Here comes the cake," I said, keeping my tone even.

Milo didn't even glance at the green fondant spikes I had molded by hand. His fingers remained glued to the plastic joysticks of Paige's gift.

Noah flicked the lighter alive. He lit the six wax candles, the small flames reflecting in his dark eyes. He ruffled Milo's hair.

"All right, buddy. All your friends are watching. The partners from my firm are watching. Tell everyone what you want this year. Shout your wish."

"Make it a good one, sweetie," Paige cooed. She stood so close to Noah their elbows brushed.

I held out the silver cake knife toward my son. "Blow them out first, Milo."

Milo ignored the knife. He squeezed the T-Rex controller to his chest, tilted his chin up, and projected his voice across the quiet room.

"I wish Aunt Paige would move into the master bedroom and be my happy mom!"

The words slammed into the air.

"Milo," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "What did you just say?"

Milo didn't flinch. "My real mom can just stay home and check my math homework. And do the laundry. That's all she's good for anyway."

I stared at my son. The boy I had rushed to the emergency room three times this year for anaphylactic shock.

A high-pitched giggle broke the quiet. Paige pressed a manicured hand over her mouth, though her eyes darted toward me, bright with triumph. "Oh, Milo. You are just too much."

"Paige," Sarah snapped from across the room. "That's not funny."

"I didn't tell him to say it!" Paige defended, though the smirk never left her lips.

I looked at Noah. I waited for him to correct our son. I waited for the reprimand, the gentle reminder about respect.

Instead, Noah chuckled.

He actually patted Milo on the back. "Kids say the craziest things, right?" Noah called out to the frozen crowd of guests. He offered a wide, easy grin to his law partners. "Total lack of filter."

"Noah," I said. My voice came out flat, stripped of all warmth. "Fix this. Now."

Noah looked down at Milo, his tone too fond. "But you know, buddy, if you say a wish loud enough, maybe it really will come true."

My fingers tightened around the handle of the cake knife. The metal dug into my skin.

"Are you going to let him talk like that?" I asked.

"Oh, relax," Noah shot back, rolling his eyes. "Don't make a scene in front of everyone. It's his birthday. He's just playing around."

"I stayed up for two nights making this," I told Noah, keeping my voice low. "You know he can't have the commercial dyes."

"And Paige bought him a two-thousand-dollar T-Rex," Noah countered, not bothering to lower his voice. "He's a kid. He wants toys, not a diet lesson."

I turned back to Milo. I extended the knife again, the blade hovering inches from the Stegosaurus. "Cut your cake, Milo."

Milo slapped my hand away. The silver knife clattered onto the mahogany table.

"I don't want your stupid dinosaur!" Milo yelled. He threw himself forward, wrapping his arms around Paige's waist. He pressed a loud kiss to her cheek. "Aunt Paige got me what I actually wanted."

Paige stroked his hair, shooting me a pitiful look. "It's okay. Boys just like loud toys."

"It's a secret anyway!" Milo announced, puffing out his chest. "Daddy and I talked about it in the car. He said Aunt Paige makes him smile more, so she should be my happy mom."

"In the car?" I asked. I stared directly at Noah. "You discussed replacing me with our six-year-old son in the car?"

Noah shifted his weight, a brief flash of panic crossing his features before he forced another laugh. "You're taking this out of context. We were just joking around on the way to soccer practice."

"Noah," Sarah stepped forward, her voice sharp. "You told your son that Paige makes you smile more than your own wife?"

"Stay out of this, Sarah," Noah snapped. "It's a private family matter."

"You're making it pretty public," she shot back.

Noah turned his attention back to the table, dismissing her. "Okay, okay, let's cut the cake. Who wants a slice?"

He reached for the knife Milo had dropped.

I stepped in front of him. I didn't let him take it.

"You think this is a joke?" I asked.

"Stop ruining the party," Noah hissed under his breath, his smile frozen for the guests. "Just serve the damn cake."

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I looked at the three of them. Noah, Paige, and Milo. A perfect, laughing unit. A family that had already rewritten its borders to exclude me.

I set the heavy cake platter onto the center of the table. I made sure it sat straight.

Then, I reached behind my back and untied the strings of my apron.

"What are you doing?" Noah asked, his forced smile faltering. "The guests want cake."

I pulled the apron over my head and dropped it directly over the fondant Stegosaurus, crushing the hand-sculpted green spikes.

"Serve it yourself," I said.

"Are you seriously throwing a tantrum right now?" Noah demanded, his voice rising.

"I'm leaving you to your happy family," I replied.

I turned my back on the crowd. I walked out of the living room, ignoring the whispers erupting behind me.

"Let her go," I heard Paige say softly to Noah. "She always does this."

I walked straight to the mahogany desk. I opened the bottom drawer and pulled out the hard-shell suitcase I had packed three days ago. Resting right on top of my folded clothes was the crisp, white envelope containing my signed offer letter from the Boston Children's Museum.
