My Son Gave My Seat to the Mistress

"Did you authorize this?" David asked.

My fingers clamped around the edge of the yellow registration form. The paper rattled. I tried to pull my hand back, but a fine tremor ran through my wrist.

"No," I whispered. "I didn't."

David didn't ask another question. He stood up, walked to a small cart in the corner, and poured water from a kettle. He returned and pressed a paper cup into my palms.

"Chamomile," he said softly. "Breathe, Susan."

The heat seeped through the cardboard, warming my freezing skin. I looked up. David's eyes held no pity, only a quiet, steady calm. For nearly two decades, I had caught my own falls. Now, a stranger standing in a high school counseling office had just handed me a lifeline.

I swallowed the lump in my throat. "Thank you."

"High school politics are messy enough without family complications," David said, leaning against his desk. "If you want, I can lock this file. No changes without your physical presence."

"Do it," I said. I set the cup down, picked up my pen, and drew a thick, black line through Claire's name. "I am the mother. The authorization stands only with me."

David nodded, taking the file back. "I'll update the system immediately."

Thirty minutes later, I pushed past the glass doors of Apex Holdings.

"Mrs. Hale, you can't go back there without an appointment," the receptionist called out, scrambling from her desk.

I ignored her. I marched straight down the corridor and shoved open the double doors to the finance department.

Ten heads snapped up from their monitors. The clatter of keyboards died instantly.

"Susan?" Mark, the head of accounting, stood up. "Robert isn't here. He's at a luncheon."

"I'm not here for Robert," I said.

I walked to the master terminal at the center of the room. I typed in my credentials. The screen flared to life, displaying the Q3 financial projections. The same projections Robert had demanded from me last night.

"What are you doing?" Mark asked, stepping closer. "Those need to go to the auditors by five."

"My job," I replied.

I clicked the authorization tab. My digital CPA signature anchored the bottom of every page, guaranteeing the company's fiscal health to the board and the auditors.

"Susan, wait," Mark said, his voice rising in panic. "If you touch that file, the system flags it as unverified."

"Exactly."

I highlighted the signature block.

Delete.

Confirm Revocation.

The screen flashed green. The guarantee vanished.

I opened my purse, pulled out my physical brass seal, and dropped it inside.

"Let the auditors know they'll need an independent review by Monday," I told Mark. "I no longer vouch for these numbers."

Mark's face drained of color. "Susan, you can't do that. The board will freeze the accounts. Robert will kill me."

"Then Robert better find a new accountant."

I turned on my heel and walked out.

Halfway down the executive corridor, a figure stepped out of the boardroom, blocking my path.

"Susan." Claire folded her arms, tilting her head with a practiced look of concern. "Mark just messaged Robert. Why are you causing a scene?"

"Move, Claire."

"I'm just trying to help Leo," she said, her voice thick with fake sympathy. "He's stressed. He needs someone who understands the pressure of high-level admissions. You're taking this too personally."

"You changed his emergency contacts," I said, my voice dangerously low. "You opened a bank account in his name."

"Robert asked me to," Claire replied, a smug smile playing on her lips. "He said you were too overwhelmed with housework to handle the logistics."

I stopped. My gaze dropped from her perfectly glossed lips to her collarbone.

A teardrop diamond rested against her skin, suspended by a delicate platinum chain.

Three years ago, Robert had returned from a business trip in Paris. I had found the receipt in his suitcase. Fifteen thousand dollars from a boutique on the Champs-Elysees. When I asked him about it, he claimed it was a retirement gift for a departing board member's wife.

It looked stunning on Claire.

A short, sharp laugh escaped my throat.

"You think this is funny?" Claire asked, her innocent mask slipping.

"I think you're wearing my money," I said.

Claire's hand flew to her neck, her fingers covering the diamond. "Robert gave this to me because I actually contribute to his life."

I stepped forward, driving my shoulder hard into hers. Claire stumbled back against the wall, gasping in shock.

"Keep the necklace," I said over my shoulder. "You're going to need it to pay your rent."

I didn't look back as the elevator doors slid open and swallowed me whole.

By two o'clock, the whine of a power drill echoed through my house.

"All set, ma'am," the locksmith said, wiping his hands on a rag. "New deadbolt on the office door. Here are your two keys."

I handed him a wad of cash. "Thank you."

Once he left, I locked myself inside the study. The heavy oak desk felt different today. It wasn't a place of unpaid labor anymore. It was a war room.

I opened my laptop and connected to the printer. The machine hummed, spitting out ten crisp, white pages.

I arranged them neatly on the center of the desk.

Downstairs, the front door slammed shut.

Heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs, taking them two at a time.

"Susan!" Robert's voice roared through the hallway.

The brass doorknob twisted violently. It held fast.

"Open this door!" he shouted, pounding his fist against the wood. "Mark said you wiped the system! Do you have any idea what you've done? The board is threatening to pull our credit line!"

I didn't answer. I picked up a black pen and signed my name on the bottom line of the final page.

"I am not playing these games with you!" Robert yelled. "Unlock the damn door!"

Crack.

The wood splintered. Robert kicked the door open, tearing the strike plate from the frame.

He stormed into the room, his face flushed purple with rage, his tie loosened, ready to scream.

"Are you out of your—"

His voice abruptly cut off.

His eyes darted from my face to the center of the desk, locking onto the bold, black letters stamped across the top page: Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.
