My Scars, His Unconditional Devotion

Alexandria POV

Efrem's voice was a low rumble, laced with profound regret.

"I'm so sorry, Alexandria. This… this should never have happened."

He spoke directly to me, ignoring Barron beside him. His words confirmed the devastating truth. My body was broken, permanently.

Barron's voice, though, was unsettlingly calm.

"It's a setback, Efrem, but not insurmountable. Modern medicine is incredible. We can explore surrogacy, adoption… there are options."

He spoke of my destroyed body as if it were a minor inconvenience, something to be 'fixed' through other means.

Efrem's fist slammed against the wall, a sharp, jarring sound.

"Options? Are you insane, Barron? Her uterus is gone! They had to remove it to save her life! There are no options for her to carry a child ever again!"

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating.

Barron gasped, a raw, strangled sound. The composure he had maintained shattered, revealing a flicker of raw panic in his eyes.

He looked at me, really looked at me, for the first time since he walked in. His face paled, the color draining away.

"Gisela… she promised… she said it would only be a miscarriage. She said she was certain they wouldn't hurt Alexandria."

His voice was barely a whisper, laced with disbelief, a desperate attempt to shift blame.

Efrem let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh.

"Gisela Merrill? You really believed that manipulative viper? She wouldn't lift a finger to save you or Alexandria if it didn't benefit her. She played you, Barron. She played you both."

Efrem stepped forward, grabbing Barron's arm, his grip tight.

"She set this up, knowing what would happen. She wanted Alexandria out of the picture, permanently."

Barron flinched, pulling away from Efrem's grasp.

His gaze darted to me, then back to Efrem. A new fear bloomed in his eyes, stark and desperate.

"Does she know?" he whispered, his voice hoarse. "Does Alexandria know what happened to her body? Does she know about Gisela?"

He was not concerned for my feelings, but for his carefully constructed lie.

"Efrem, help me. Please. Tell me what to do."

His arrogance had vanished, replaced by a desperate, pathetic plea.

"We need to get rid of the medical team," Barron continued, his voice regaining a semblance of control, though still tight with panic. "Permanently. Every doctor, every nurse who knows the details. Silence them. I don't care what it takes. Alexandria can never know the full extent of this. Not from them."

Efrem stared at Barron, a long, sorrowful look. He finally let out a heavy sigh, nodding slowly.

"Fine, Barron. I'll handle it. But what's your long-term plan? She knows enough already."

Barron closed his eyes, a single tear tracing a path down his cheek.

"I will spend the rest of my life making it up to her. I will find a way to give her all the children she wants. I swear it, Efrem. I'll find a surrogate, an egg donor, whatever it takes. I will give her a family, a future."

His words sounded hollow, a desperate attempt to cling to some semblance of normalcy, to rewrite the monstrous narrative he had created.

He wanted to buy back my forgiveness with more lies and fabricated solutions.

Efrem simply shook his head, a silent condemnation, and then turned to leave the room.

The door clicked shut, leaving me alone with the man who had destroyed my life.

Barron turned to me, his eyes now filled with a performative remorse.

He took a hesitant step closer, then another, until he stood by my bed.

He reached for my hand, his touch sending a shiver of revulsion through me.

It was the same touch that had once brought me comfort, now a source of chilling dread.

He used to hold my hand like this after a long day, a silent gesture of solidarity and love. He used to trace patterns on my skin, his thumb smoothing over my knuckles.

Now, it felt like a viper coiling around my wrist.

"Alexandria," he began, his voice soft, almost pleading. "My love. Please forgive me. This was a terrible mistake. I never meant for this to happen to you. I will make this right. I promise."

He squeezed my hand, his thumb brushing over my skin, a parody of the intimacy we once shared.

My hand felt cold in his, lifeless.

Forgive him? How could I forgive the man who had stolen my child, destroyed my body, and shattered my trust?

The image of Gisela, pregnant with his "firstborn," flashed in my mind, a cruel counterpoint to the emptiness in my womb.

I saw the blood, felt the pain, heard his cold, calculating words in the ambulance.

There was no forgiveness, no redemption for this kind of betrayal.

My husband, the man I had given my heart and my future to, had sacrificed me on the altar of his ambition.

The profound loss, the physical and emotional scars, were irreversible reminders of his cruelty.

I made my decision then, a cold, unwavering resolve settling in my ravaged heart.

This marriage, this life, was over.

I would walk away from the Barbers, from their power, their prestige, their toxic legacy. I would shed their name, their world, and everything associated with them.

Let Barron and Gisela have their twisted dynasty. I wished them a future as barren and empty as the one they had condemned me to.

But I couldn't just leave. Barron would hunt me down.

I needed to disappear completely. I needed to die.

When Efrem returned that night, I whispered four words that changed everything: "Help me fake my death."
