Chapter 1 of My Mother-in-Law Came to Tear Apart My Eccentric Family

New Year's Day.

Mom, Dad, and my brother's family swung by to check out my new digs.

May, holding her eight-year-old who's still a bit tongue-tied, declared with a flourish,

"Tommy, this pad's yours starting today!"

Given that my parents always played favorites, favoring my brother, they figured since I wasn't hitched, why not just put the house in his name.

I just watched these so-called "relatives" coldly and fetched a mop from the kitchen to send them packing.

1

The cat was out of the bag about my plush new condo at last night's dinner, thanks to a voicemail from my boyfriend, James.

Mom, Dad, and my brother's family were desperate to visit my new place.

Bright and early on New Year's Day, a barrage of calls from my family jolted me awake—felt like a death knell.

"Megan, we're parked outside your gate and the guards are giving us the cold shoulder! Ring them up! Complain! Why the hell can't we get into our own place?"

Mom's booming voice cleared my grogginess right away, and in the background, May, my sister-in-law's nagging was just as grating.

Dragging my feet, I threw on a coat, dialed my boyfriend, and dashed to the gate.

"Look sharp! That's my daughter! Doesn't that make us residents?"

Mom perked up the second she saw me like she'd just been shot with adrenaline.

I sheepishly nodded at the guard and led the entourage home.

"Not a bad setup here."

May scanned the complex with a haughty air like she was overseeing an official inspection.

"What's this? A fingerprint lock? Man, that's slick."

"Isn't it though, Mom? Fancy gadgets cost a pretty penny!"

Mom and May whispered in awe at my front door as if it were the eighth wonder of the world.

My brother and I have never seen eye to eye.

Post-middle school, they told me they couldn't afford to keep us both in high school, so they shuffled me off to a trade school.

Knowing I was second best, I hustled over the holidays, distributing flyers to scrape by while classmates enjoyed their breaks.

After graduation, I severed ties with my family, only reconnecting for my brother's wedding.

Now, with my boyfriend, I've hustled our way up the social ladder, earning a spot at the family table.

2

"Man, this living room is a breath of fresh air!"

"Totally, Mom. And check out that view—you can see the river from here!"

They barged in, shoes and all, before I could even offer slippers.

"Ted, feast your eyes on that gym setup. They've got the works."

Mom tugged Dad over to the window, his face lighting up at the view.

"Megan, you've really made it—living solo in this sprawling space? Must be 3,000 square feet, huh?"

My brother Lincoln grabbed my arm, and I forced a polite grin.

May chimed in when she saw I wasn't playing along,

"When do you think we'll get to live large like this? Too bad your brother can't pull his weight—only pulls in $1,800 a month..."

It clicked—they were fishing for an invite to move in.

But this place was meant for my future with my boyfriend; we both paid our shares, and our names were on the deed.

Even if I had the right, inviting them was out of the question.

If I were still on the streets handing out flyers, these folks would dodge me without a second thought.

"I didn't fork over much cash; most of it was my boyfriend's doing."

May's face fell.

"Cut the crap, Megan. You roll up in a Benz to work, while your brother's been pedaling that old beater for years."

They wanted me to spring for a new scooter for my brother?

Fed up with their snide remarks, I told them to sit tight while I got dinner ready.

Meanwhile, I was silently praying for my boyfriend, James Parker, to show up before I had to lay down the law myself.

3

I was slinging hash in the kitchen while they made themselves at home on the couch, flicking on the TV.

"Mommy—wah—"

A cry and a crash came from the hallway.

I raced out to find my nephew, tears streaming down his face, stumbling out of my bedroom.

Crap! Forgot to lock the bedroom door!

I checked him for injuries, relieved he was okay, then scoped out the damage in my room.

My heart sank seeing my vanity trashed—lipsticks snapped, smeared across the walls, skincare products strewn all over my bed.

That crash? My brand-new perfume, a splurge from just before New Year's. I was seething.

Despite my rage, I held it in when I saw May comforting her frightened son.

"No harm done. Just make sure to ask for permission next time before entering my room, kiddo."

No sooner had I spoken than May snapped back.

"Seriously, Megan? You knew he was coming and you left your stuff out? What if he'd gotten hurt? Could you handle that?"

"Honestly, Megan! You'd think you'd learn to tidy up by now."

Mom, ever the protective grandmother, scolded me alongside May.

She even started trashing my lipsticks, crushing them underfoot in a fit.

"Scaring my grandbaby! That'll teach you!"

"Mom, you're gonna stain the floor!"

At my wit's end, I finally raised my voice. Dad immediately slammed the door with a thunderous kick.

"Why all the yelling? It's New Year's! You're still single, wasting your cash on this nonsense!"

4

My anger had hit the ceiling, and I was just about to kick them out when the sound of the fingerprint lock unlocking chimed in.

James came in laden with gifts, took one look at the tense scene, and quickly came over to check on me.

"Look at what that little terror did to the room!"

With James by my side, the tears I'd been holding back just spilled over.

"Who are you calling a little terror? Megan! Just because you've got some change doesn't mean you can lord over everyone!"

May, acting the shrew, pointed a threatening finger so close it nearly poked my eye. I wasn't having it and slapped her hand away.

"I sure can lord over my own house! I don't want you here, so take your kid and get out!"

When I stood my ground, she collapsed on the floor with the kid, crying and slapping her thighs in a dramatic display.

"Oh, what a life! Married to a deadbeat and bullied by his sister..."

"Smack!"

I watched her meltdown, emotionless, when suddenly Lincoln, who'd been quiet, charged in and slapped me hard.

The shock of his slap sent me reeling into James's arms.

My brother tried to hit me again, but James, now fired up, didn't let him. With one swift kick to the stomach, he sent my brother sprawling.

"You ungrateful brat! How dare you hit my son? Megan! Is this the guy you're dating? Break up with him, now!"

As my brother lay on the ground, my dad pointed at me, bellowing for me to break up with James.

"That's right! A man like that should never set foot in our house. If he can hit your brother today, what's stopping him from hitting you tomorrow?"

My mom joined in, even pulling out her phone to threaten to call the police.

"Go ahead, call them! Your Lincoln threw the first punch. We've got cameras all over this place. Let's see who the cops side with!"

I bluffed about the cameras just to scare her off, and it worked—Mom sheepishly put her phone away.

5

The standoff continued, but James stood his ground protectively beside me, and May's tears suddenly stopped.

"Come on, it's the holidays! We're family, aren't we? No hard feelings, right? Megan, your nephew's just a kid. Sorry about that. Now, where's the kitchen? I'll whip us up something nice."

My mom, seeing an opportunity to de-escalate, quickly agreed.

"Yeah, Megan, we're family after all. Blood is thicker than water, and we shouldn't air our dirty laundry in front of outsiders."

That dig about "outsiders" was clearly meant for James, but they didn't realize that in my heart, they were the outsiders.

With the family backing off, James whispered to me to just let it slide for now—"It's New Year's, after all. We can always cut ties later."

May got busy in the kitchen, and my mom started tidying up the room, ending the farce with a disgruntled grunt from my dad.

My brother, no longer upset about the kick, eyed James's gifts greedily, squatting near the door.

James, seeing I was upset, tenderly applied ice to my face, promising a shopping trip for new skincare products after they left.

Comforted by his words, I managed to sit at the table with everyone, albeit reluctantly.

But as the day went on, it became clear they weren't planning on leaving.

"Megan, it's getting late. Mom's decided—we're staying over tonight," my mom announced, dropping her fork like that settled it.

Without asking me, May scooped up the kid and started scouting out rooms.

They didn't bother to ask my opinion, even though it was barely midday.

"Mom, you and Dad should take the master bedroom—it gets the best sunlight. The secondary bedroom's a bit tight but should fit us three just fine..."

May claimed the biggest rooms for herself, acting as if she owned the place.

6

My dad also put his utensils down, claiming he was too stuffed and needed to lie down in my room.

I stood up and blocked the bedroom door immediately.

"Dad, Mom, I'm actually heading over to James's place to see his mom. Why don't I drop you off on the way?"

"Really, Megan, now that you have money, why aren't you looking after your own folks? You're not even married, and here you are doting on someone else's parents!"

"Exactly, Megan. You can neglect your parents if you want, but why kick them out?"

My dad, egged on by my brother and sister-in-law, flared up and raised his hand to hit me.

James was ready, deflecting his arm in a swift move.

"Really? Going to hit an elder now?"

My dad tried to use his status to intimidate James, convinced he wouldn't dare retaliate.

"Here's the deal—if Megan considers you family, then you're elders. But if she doesn't, anyone who touches her will have to answer to me!"

James's steely gaze quelled my dad's fury, and my brother, mindful of the earlier kick, kept quiet.

I knew what kind of man I chose. No matter who it was, he wouldn't hesitate to protect me.

"Honey, of course, you should visit James's parents. Here, take twenty bucks—don't show up empty-handed. Grab some oranges on the way."

I ignored the wrinkled bills my mom offered, unable to bridge the emotional gap that had grown over the years.

I bit back my frustration and repeatedly insisted they leave.

My mom's face turned stern when she saw I wasn't backing down.

"Listen, Megan, I brought you into this world, so everything you own is mine. Don't even think about taking this house when you marry. If you want to marry that boy, you'll transfer the house to your brother!"
