Chapter 1 of My Mate Suppressed My Wolf for Three Years

The bond snapped at 9:47 on a Sunday night, under a full moon so bright it looked like a hole punched through the sky.

I was standing at the back of the crowd in the plain gray dress the Omegas wear to ceremonies. Three years I had waited to hear him call me up. Three years of scrubbing floors and eating alone and pressing my thumb to the warm mark on my neck to remind myself I still belonged to someone. Tonight, I thought, was finally the night he would name me his Luna.

Callum climbed the ceremonial platform in his black regalia. The pack fell quiet. His eyes found mine across a hundred bowed heads.

"Hadley Palmer," he said. My knees almost gave out from relief.

Then his mouth kept moving.

"I, Callum Rogers, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Hadley Palmer, as my mate and Luna."

The warmth on my neck went out like a candle in wind. First cold. Then hollow. Then something under the skin scooped itself out from inside, and I felt a door slam shut in a room I had lived in my whole life.

"—and I take Aya Carlson, daughter of Gamma Carlson, as my chosen Luna."

My legs folded. I hit the wooden planks of the platform I hadn't remembered climbing. Somewhere, far away, Aya's heels clicked toward him. The pack made a soft, satisfied sound, the way they do when a story ends the way they wanted.

My spine arched off the wood. I couldn't breathe. It was not sadness. Sadness is a feeling. This was a wound, an actual open wound where a bond used to live, and my body did not know how to be a body without it.

Callum did not look down at me.

Ten feet away, Beta Declan Cross stood with his hands behind his back and his eyes on the tree line.

And then, underneath the pain, something moved.

It started in my ribs. A pressure, a stretching, like a second body trying to fit inside the one I already had. My shoulder blade cracked. I heard it before I felt it. Someone in the crowd screamed. My fingers curved wrong. My jaw pushed forward. The pain of the bond severing and the pain of my bones remaking themselves braided together into one white sound, and I stopped being the shape I had been born into.

When my eyes opened again I was standing on four legs.

Silver. I could see the fur on my own shoulder. Silver-white, and the moonlight ran along it like water.

The clearing went dead quiet.

Then every single wolf in that clearing — Deltas, Gammas, elders, my former mate — dropped their gaze and tilted their throats to the sky. Not because I told them to. Because their bodies did it before their minds could argue. Callum staggered a half-step back on the platform and his chin lifted against his will, exposing the long line of his neck.

Something in me — someone in me — inhaled the moment and held it.

I shifted back. I don't know how. The wolf did it for me. I was on my knees on the wood, naked, shaking, and the aura I was radiating had not dimmed at all.

"Order." Callum's voice came out cracked, thin. "Order — I said —"

His Alpha tone hit the air and dissolved. It did not reach me. It did not reach anyone. His mouth kept trying to form the word and the word kept dying halfway out.

I stood up.

A cloak dropped over my shoulders from behind. Heavy wool, warm from someone's body. I turned my head just enough to see him — tall, dark-haired, an unfamiliar crest at his collar. Lycan. He did not touch me. He did not ask me anything. He simply stepped back once he'd covered me and let me have my own two feet.

His eyes were the color of dark honey and they were looking at me like he already knew something I didn't.

I met them for a breath. I did not thank him.

I walked off the platform. The crowd opened. Nobody spoke.

I walked all the way back to the pack house, up the servants' stairs, down the narrow hallway to the small cold room at the end. I closed the door. I sat on the edge of the cot.

And a voice inside my skull said, clearly, in a register that was mine and not mine —

*I was always here.*

I froze.

*He buried me. Not you.* The voice was low and old and furious. *My name is Seraphine. I have been under the ice for three years.*

My hand went to my neck out of habit. My thumb found the scar where his mark used to burn. It was cold. Empty. A round, smooth nothing.

And for the first time in three years, I did not mourn it.

I closed my eyes and I started to think.

Downstairs, at the far end of the corridor, I heard a cabinet door open in the kitchen — quick, quiet, the way someone opens a lock they don't want anyone to hear.
