Chapter 1 of My Mate Locked Me Underground After Killing My Father

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of two hundred wolves I'd spent three weeks preparing to witness our renewal.

I smelled her on him first. Jasmine and something sharper—sweat, maybe, or the particular musk that clings after sex. It was layered into his collar, his wrists, the hollow of his throat where my own scent should have been. My wolf stirred, uneasy, nosing at the wrongness before I could name it.

Vance stepped onto the dais. I stood five feet away in the formal Luna dress I'd chosen myself—deep blue, high collar, the kind of thing that made me look like I belonged beside an Alpha. He met my eyes. His face was calm.

"I, Vance Patterson, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Madeline Wright, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold. Not fading—extinguishing. Like someone had pressed a frozen coin against my skin and held it there until the flesh beneath went numb. My wolf made a sound I'd never heard her make before: a choked, airless whimper, and then she was gone. Not sleeping. Gone. The space where she'd been for seven years collapsed into silence so complete I could feel the shape of it, a hollow carved out of my chest.

I gripped the edge of the stone platform. My knees wanted to buckle. I locked them.

Vance turned. Heidi Black stood at the foot of the dais in a dress cut low enough that I could see her collarbone, the unmarked curve of her throat. She tilted her head back. He sank his teeth into her neck without hesitation, without ceremony, the way a man bites into something he's been hungry for. Her eyes fluttered closed. The pack watched. I watched.

When he lifted his head, the mark gleamed wet in the torchlight. Fresh. Deep. Deliberate. My healer's brain catalogued it with clinical precision: canine penetration, subcutaneous deposit of bonding pheromones, the kind of mark that takes at least two minutes of sustained pressure to set properly. He'd been planning this.

The pack bond rippled. Two hundred wolves felt it at once—the new Luna's scent locking into place where mine had been. I felt it too, the absence more than the presence, like a tooth pulled and the tongue that won't stop searching the gap.

I stepped forward. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that. "Alpha Patterson. Pack law grants every Luna the right to address her dismissal before the assembly. I invoke that right."

Vance looked at me. For a moment I thought he might let me speak. Then his Alpha tone descended like a hand closing around my throat.

"Silence."

My voice died. The words I'd been forming—grounds, explanation, seven years—choked off mid-breath. My throat closed. I could feel the command sitting on my tongue like a weight, pressing down, making sure nothing got past it.

Vance turned to the assembly. "Luna Madeline's wolf has exhibited signs of going feral. For the safety of the pack, confinement is required under pack law pending assessment."

His warriors moved before he finished speaking. Two of them—Garrett and Liam, wolves I'd stitched up after border skirmishes, wolves I'd taught to wrap sprains properly—took my arms. I didn't fight. What would have been the point? My wolf was gone. My voice was locked. The mate bond was a cold, dead thing hanging around my neck.

They dragged me through the pack house. Past the alliance hall I'd painted myself last spring, the soft gray that made the space feel larger. Past the healer's cabinet I'd stocked by hand, organized by scent so I could find what I needed in the dark. Down a staircase I'd never seen before, narrow and steep, the kind of thing you don't build unless you're planning to use it.

The door at the bottom was reinforced with silver. I could smell it before we reached it—sharp, medicinal, wrong. They shoved me inside. The lock engaged with a heavy click.

I stood in the dark and listened. Above me, faint but unmistakable: music. Footsteps. The clink of glasses. The Renewal Ceremony was still going. They were celebrating.

I turned. Ran my hands along the walls. The silver was concentrated near the door and along the seams, enough to burn if I pressed too hard but not enough to kill outright. The room was maybe ten feet by twelve. Stone floor. A single water trough in the corner, the kind you'd use for livestock.

I knelt beside it. Lifted the water to my lips. Paused.

The bitterness hit my tongue before I swallowed. I knew that taste. I'd treated wolves poisoned by it, scraped it out of wounds, warned pups away from the purple flowers that grew near the eastern border.

Wolfsbane.

I set the water down carefully. My hands were steady. That surprised me. I tore a strip from the hem of my ceremonial dress—the blue silk I'd chosen because Vance said it made my eyes look darker—and used it as a filter. It wouldn't remove the poison. It would reduce the concentration. Enough to keep my organs functioning. Enough to buy time.

I drank.

Then I started talking.

"Ironveil Pack. Founded spring of 2009. Eastern border: the ridge line above Crescent Falls. Western border: the old logging road, marked by the twin oaks my father planted the year I was born. Northern alliance: Clearwater Pack, treaty signed June 14, 2011, witnesses August Wright, Madeline Wright, and Beta Carrick Stone."

My voice echoed off the stone. I kept going.

"Southern alliance: Redwood Pack, treaty signed September 3, 2012, revised April 2015 after the rogue incursion. Witnesses: August Wright, Madeline Wright, Vance Patterson."

I wasn't grieving. I was taking inventory. Every alliance my father had built. Every wolf's name I'd memorized from his ledgers. Every boundary negotiation, every trade agreement, every piece of Ironveil that Vance thought he'd stolen when he killed my father and locked me in the dark.

He could take my bond. He could take my wolf. He could take my voice when he was close enough to command it.

But he couldn't take this. Not while I was still breathing.

I kept talking.
