My Mate Announced His Mistress's Pregnancy at Our Bonding Summary

At exactly 10:14 AM on a Tuesday, my world crumbled. During our sacred bonding ceremony, my fated mate, Alpha Jonas, delivered a devastating public betrayal. Standing before the entire pack, he announced that Coraline Young was pregnant with his pup and would usurp my rightful place as Ironveil's Luna. Chapter 1 of My Mate Announced His Mistress's Pregnancy at Our Bonding

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I know because I was watching the clock in the great hall when Jonas took the stage, and the numbers were still glowing on the display when he said Coraline's name. Not mine. Hers.

"I'm honored to announce," Jonas said, his Alpha tone carrying across the banquet hall like it always did — steady, certain, final — "that Coraline Young is carrying my pup. She will be Ironveil's Luna."

The mate bond on my neck didn't scream. It didn't even flinch. It just sat there, warm and steady, transmitting Jonas's calm like it had for ten years. The calm of a man who had already decided.

I stood thirty feet from the stage, pressed between two Delta wolves I'd helped train. My thumb found the inside of my opposite wrist. Press. Release. An old habit. I waited for the bond to stir — apology, hesitation, anything. It didn't. Through the mind-link, all I felt was his satisfaction. He was pleased with himself.

Coraline stepped into the light beside him, one hand resting on her flat stomach, the other curling possessively around Jonas's arm. She wore red. I had worn gray. I always wore gray at pack events — neutral, unobtrusive, the color of someone who worked behind the scenes.

The applause started. I didn't move.

"Lyla?" Someone touched my shoulder. I didn't turn to see who.

My wolf — the faint, stunted thing that had never fully woken — stirred for the first time in months. Not in grief. In warning.

Then my throat tightened.

It happened fast. One second I was standing. The next, my airway closed like a fist had wrapped around it from the inside. My knees buckled. The floor came up hard against my palms, then my cheek. Sounds warped — voices stretching, footsteps too loud, someone saying my name from very far away.

Wolfsbane.

I tried to say it, but my tongue wouldn't move. My muscles locked. The convulsion started in my spine and radiated outward, my body seizing in full view of three hundred wolves. Through the haze, I heard Jonas's voice from the stage.

"Give her some air. She does this."

Not a question. Not concern. A dismissal. An Alpha tone that carried across the hall and told everyone watching that this was normal, that I was dramatic, that they should look away.

I heard him walk off the stage. Heard Coraline's heels click beside him. Heard the crowd part as he escorted her toward the Luna suite — the one I had decorated seven years ago, bonding runes stitched into the curtain hems by my own hands.

No one from the Alpha's inner circle came.

A healer arrived eventually. Twenty minutes, maybe. Long enough for the convulsions to stop and the wolfsbane to settle into a dull, poisonous ache in my veins. She helped me sit up, checked my pulse, said something about stress and exhaustion. She didn't ask about the appetizers. Neither did I.

I made it back to my room alone.

For three days, I stayed there. I told myself I was recovering. I wasn't. I was deciding.

On the fourth morning, I opened the treaty archive — the encrypted database I had built and maintained sole administrative access to for a decade. Seven active alliance agreements. Border-patrol intelligence logs. Ironveil's financial reserve records. Every piece of political infrastructure that kept this pack standing.

I copied all of it. Encrypted the files. Transferred them to an external server only I could reach.

The archive access log timestamped every action. I didn't care. Let them see. Let them wonder what I took and when I took it and whether they could function without it.

When I closed the terminal, I pressed my thumb to my wrist one last time. Then I stopped. I didn't do it again.

The summons came that afternoon. A public pack gathering. Mandatory attendance.

I went because I wanted to see what Jonas thought he was building without me.

The gathering was held in the central courtyard. The entire pack assembled in concentric rings around the raised platform. Jonas stood at the center, Coraline beside him. She was wearing white.

Not just white. My white.

The ceremonial mating gown. The one I had stitched by hand over ten years, each panel woven with a bonding rune representing one year of our union. One year of building this pack from nothing. One year of standing two steps behind him so his authority would never be questioned.

Coraline moved through the crowd in my dress, and the runes — designed to activate only at a true mating ceremony, only against the skin of a marked mate — began to darken. The thread degraded at the seams, turning from silver to ash-gray, the magic rejecting her unmarked skin.

I watched the decade die in real time.

Through the bond, I felt Jonas's indifference. Not cruelty. Not even awareness. Just the absence of recognition that anything was wrong.

I turned and walked back to my room. I pulled the single bag I had been quietly packing from under the bed. I added the last item from my shelf: a small notebook, handwritten, containing every alliance contact I had cultivated over ten years. Names. Frequencies. Terms. My leverage.

Then I moved toward the door.

Coraline was waiting in the corridor.

"Lyla." She smiled. Warm. Sympathetic. Practiced. "I know how hard this must be."

I said nothing.

"I thought we could meet," she continued, stepping closer. "Privately. At the old outpost on the eastern border. There's a territory-renunciation parchment — just a formality, really. A dignified exit. You deserve that much."

I looked at her. At the degraded runes still visible on the gown's neckline. At the way her hand rested on her stomach — the same performative gesture she'd used on stage.

I recognized the performance for what it was.

But I had the archive copies. I had the notebook. I had a bag already packed.

If the parchment was a clean exit, I would sign and go. If it wasn't, I would know exactly what Coraline Young truly was.

"Fine," I said.

I turned to follow her.

Deep in my chest, my wolf — silent for days — produced a single low growl.

Not fear.

Warning.
