Chapter 1 of My Husband’s Mistress Told Reddit Everything

"He drinks a double espresso with oat milk every morning," the post read. "Never sugar. If a meeting runs past nine at night, he yanks his gray silk tie loose with two fingers and rolls his sleeves to the elbows."

I stared at my phone screen in the quiet living room, my mug of chamomile tea growing cold on the coffee table.

The Reddit thread was blowing up on r/TrueOffMyChest. It sat right at the top of the popular feed, titled: *I am hopelessly in love with my CEO, and next week is our chance.*

The poster’s username was *VelvetSecret_*.

"Is it weird that he notices every tiny thing about me?" she wrote in the body text. "Last month, a senior director made a crude comment about my skirt in a strategy meeting. My boss slammed his pen onto the glass table so hard it cracked the plastic casing. He pointed at the door and told him, 'Get your things and get out of my building before security drags you out.' He fired him on the spot. Just for me."

I swallowed, the air in my throat suddenly dry.

Two weeks ago, Alex had mentioned firing an account director named Marcus for 'workplace misconduct.' When I had asked him for details over dinner, he had merely waved his fork and said, "Just keeping the office clean, Erin. Don't worry about it."

I scrolled down. My thumb shook against the glass.

"Two weeks ago, my new four-inch heels tore the skin off my heels," the post continued. "He noticed my limp in the corridor. He didn't send an intern. He canceled his two o'clock call, took my elbow, walked me to the boutique on Fifth, and bought me a pair of Italian leather flats. He knelt on the carpet and slipped them onto my feet himself."

I set my tea mug down. The ceramic clattered against the wood.

And then came the part that made my stomach drop into a pit:

"He thinks he hides it, but whenever the boardroom empties, he stays back. He stares at me when he thinks I'm organizing files. I catch him looking at me."

The comments were a bloodbath. Hundreds of users were arguing back and forth.

*"Girl, this is a lawsuit waiting to happen,"* the top comment said.

VelvetSecret_ replied: *"Not when the chemistry is mutual."*

Another user jumped in: *"Does he have a wife?"*

My breath caught. I waited for the refresh.

There it was. VelvetSecret_ posted her answer three minutes later:

*"Yes. Married for three years."*

Three years.

Alex and I had celebrated our third anniversary in Paris last month. We had stood near the Seine, sharing a bottle of red wine, laughing about how fast the time had gone since our small stone-chapel wedding in Vermont.

I scrolled furiously through the replies beneath her answer.

*"You're a disgusting homewrecker,"* someone wrote. *"Leave married men alone."*

A different user chimed in: *"Honestly? High-profile CEOs almost always have arranged marriages for business leverage or social optics. Fifty bucks says his home life is dead and loveless. Go get your man."*

VelvetSecret_ had left a single red heart on that comment.

And pinned right beneath it, she added an update to her main post:

"Next week is our first out-of-town trip together. An acquisition summit. I handled the hotel reservations this morning. Our company policy says two adjoining rooms for executives and support staff, but I booked a single penthouse suite with one king bed. He hasn't checked the itinerary yet."

My phone felt like an iron weight in my palm.

*It’s just an internet story,* I told myself, trying to force a shallow chuckle into the empty room. *Reddit is full of bored creative writers. Plenty of CEOs drink espresso. Plenty of men wear gray ties.*

The front door clicked open.

The brass keys rattled against the entryway console table.

"Erin?" Alex called out, his low baritone cutting through the silence of the foyer.

I tucked the phone face down onto the sofa cushion. "In here."

Alex stepped into the living room, shrugging off his charcoal wool overcoat. His collar was unbuttoned, his tie—gray silk—loosened around his neck, skewed slightly to the left. He looked exhausted, the sharp angles of his jaw shadowed with dark stubble.

"Traffic was brutal on the bridge," he murmured, crossing the rug toward me. He leaned down, placing a quick, dry peck on my forehead. "Have you eaten?"

"Not yet," I said, my voice coming out tighter than I intended. "I was waiting for you."

He offered a faint, apologetic smile, loosening his cuffs. "I grabbed a sandwich at my desk around four. I’m not really hungry."

"Long day?"

"Endless meetings," he said, turning toward the kitchen. "The quarterly review is coming up, plus the regional summit next Tuesday."

I stood up from the sofa. My feet felt numb. "Tuesday?"

"Yeah." He opened the refrigerator, pulling out a bottle of sparkling water. "Chicago. Just three days. We need to close the Midwest logistics contract."

"Chicago," I repeated, the word tasting like lead.

"Just three days," he said again, uncapping the bottle. "I'll fly out early Tuesday morning and come back Thursday evening."

"Who's going with you? Mark?"

Alex took a sip of water. He wiped the corner of his lip with the back of his thumb.

"No," he said smoothly. "Mark is handling the local branch. My new executive assistant is coming. She’s coordinating the vendor meetings."

The air in the room thinned.

"Your new assistant," I said. "What was her name again?"

"Blair," Alex replied. "Blair Miller. She transferred from the marketing division last month."

*VelvetSecret_.*

A ringing started in my ears, high and steady. I stepped closer to the island counter, leaning my palms against the cold marble to keep my knees straight.

"Did you take her to buy shoes when her feet hurt?" The words nearly tore out of my throat, but I caught them behind my teeth.

"Erin?" Alex asked, his brows drawing together. "You look pale. Are you feeling alright?"

"I'm fine," I said. I looked directly into his dark brown eyes, searching for a twitch, a flicker of guilt, anything. "Who booked the hotel?"

He paused, lowering the bottle. "What do you mean?"

"The rooms," I said, keeping my tone level, almost conversational. "Did the agency handle it, or did she?"

"Blair handles my schedule," he said, a faint edge of irritation creeping into his voice. "Why are you asking about travel logistics all of a sudden?"

"Just wondering if there are separate rooms, or it is just the two of you sharing a space to save corporate costs," I said, forcing a faint, polite smile.

The kitchen went dead quiet.

The hum of the refrigerator seemed deafening between us.

Alex didn't blink. For three long seconds, he stayed entirely motionless, staring at me as if evaluating a rival across a negotiating table.

Then, he let out a short, dismissive breath through his nose.

"What kind of question is that?" he said, his voice dropping into that smooth, rational tone he used whenever he wanted to shut down an argument before it started. "It's an ordinary business trip, Erin. She's my secretary. Don't overthink."

He set the water bottle down on the counter with a soft thud, turned his back on me, and walked toward the master bedroom. "I'm going to take a shower."

The bedroom door clicked shut behind him.

A moment later, the sound of running water echoed through the pipes.

I walked back to the sofa. My hands were freezing.

I picked up my phone, unlocked the screen, and refreshed the Reddit page.

A new notification showed on the thread. Two minutes ago, VelvetSecret_ had posted a new comment to her growing audience:

*"He just agreed to the trip schedule. Chicago, here we come. Maybe this time, I'll finally get what I want."*
