Chapter 1 of My Husband Stole Our Baby for His Mistress

The moment my mother-in-law learned I was going to register my son, Nathan, as a Native American under my name, she became furious at the hospital.

She stood outside the delivery room with her hands planted on her hips, hurling curses loud enough to make the walls tremble.

Still groggy from the anesthesia, I tried to fight through the pain and explain. I told her that if we registered him under my name, he'd get a fifteen-point boost on his college entrance exams. That kind of advantage could change a kid's whole future.

Eleanor didn't care and didn't even pretend to listen. Instead, she threatened to throw herself off the building.

And in the end, I gave in.

What I never saw coming and could never have imagined is that she would go behind my back and change my legal address and personal records without even telling me.

By the time I found out, I had already spent over a year as a person without a legal identity. And it was too late to fix it and too late to undo what she'd done.

Without proper documentation, I lost my job. I was a young woman, married away from my family, trapped in a house that never truly felt like mine, and under the control of a woman who made it her daily goal to wear me down until I had nothing left.

Years later, when Nathan failed the college entrance exam, missing the cutoff by exactly fifteen points, she twisted the knife one more time.

"If it weren't for your selfish mother refusing to register you under her name," Eleanor said, practically gleeful, "you wouldn't have had to suffer like this, my poor grandson!"

That was the last thing I heard before my son stabbed me.

And Paul, my husband? He actually used our son's supermale syndrome diagnosis to write a clemency letter to the court, begging for leniency, like that somehow made everything okay.

But when I opened my eyes again, I wasn't in a courtroom or a hospital bed. I was in the delivery room back at the time when I was about to give birth to my son.

——

Right then, a sharp wave of pain ripped through my abdomen, and warm liquid spread beneath me.

"Amara, don't be afraid. Your mother-in-law just called. She and your husband are on their way," said a familiar voice.

My eyes snapped open, and I met the maternity nurse's gaze. Aunt Clara's eyes were filled with concern as she hovered over me.

Suddenly, it struck me. The room, the scent of antiseptic, and the heaviness in the air were precisely unchanged.

This wasn't a dream.

I was really back, back in the day, eighteen years ago, when I gave birth to my son.

There was no time to fall apart. The contractions were getting worse, sharper, closer together. I knew I didn't have long.

"Aunt Clara, you have to listen to me," I said, grabbing her wrist. "You need to remember everything I'm about to say. Every word."

She stared at me, confused and silent. But I didn't wait. I told her everything I could that mattered, before they wheeled me into the delivery room.

As they pushed the gurney down the hall, the floodlights overhead poured down on my face, sterile and blinding.

The anesthesia hadn't kicked in yet, so my mind was still sharp. Every beep, every footstep, every breath felt magnified.

Outside, I could already hear my mother-in-law, Eleanor Wilson.

Her voice was shrill, slicing through the hallway like broken glass.

"Why should my golden grandson be registered under some orphan girl's name? That's pure bad luck! Is someone trying to take my grandson? Not a chance in hell!"

Then, Eleanor scoffed. "Fifteen points? Please. Every Wilson kid is smart. We don't need charity points to get into college. Who does she think she is? If she's got something to say, let her drag her sorry self out here and say it to my face! And you don't think being a paid nurse gives you a say in family matters. Stay in your damn place!"

Just like before, I lay on the delivery table, teetering between life and death while Aunt Clara tried her best to relay my wishes to Paul and his mother that my son should be registered under my name once again.

But Eleanor, who was outside the delivery room, didn't back down. She spewed insults at Aunt Clara like poison, spitting out slurs and curses like she had nothing better to do.

For two whole hours, she dragged my name through the mud. She cursed my family and my background like she'd rehearsed every line just for this day.

"Tell the patient's family to quiet down!" the lead surgeon snapped. "The patient's blood pressure is spiking. If they keep yelling, we might lose her!"

A nurse rushed out to try to contain the chaos.

When the anesthesia finally kicked in, I drifted into a fog.

But even in that unconsciousness, the nightmare of my past life came roaring back—one brutal memory after another.

The day my son was born, my mother-in-law had conveniently left early for one of her 'morning walks.'

When my water broke, and I started bleeding, I called her eighteen times, but not once did she pick up.

With no other option, I turned to Aunt Clara. She was the one who rushed me to the hospital and stayed by my side when no one else did.

I was Native American. My husband, Paul, was white. If our son were officially listed under my tribal enrollment, he'd qualify for certain education benefits, including a boost in college admissions.

And it wasn't just about school.

My family owned several farms and over a dozen acres of land. That land could only be inherited if our son were listed under my name.

And so, before I went into labor, Paul and I had agreed: the baby would be registered under my name. Once Nathan turned eighteen, we could transfer it to Paul's name, if we wanted.

But on the day I gave birth, my mother-in-law used that agreement like ammunition. She twisted it into a battle, and I had no strength to fight back.

When I woke up after surgery, the first thing I saw was Aunt Clara's tear-streaked face. Then I heard the whispers from the hallway, the gossip from the nurses, and the other patients.

That's how I found out what had happened and how Eleanor had screamed for two hours straight outside the delivery room, her voice echoing through the halls like she was on stage.

Meanwhile, back in the recovery room, Paul just stood there silent against the wall.

No matter how many times I tried to explain, his mother wouldn't hear it. Eleanor even threatened to throw herself off the hospital building if I insisted on registering the baby under my name.

Watching my husband stand there, doing nothing, while his mother raged and threatened, I finally broke.

I gave in.
