Chapter 1 of My Husband Sent Me to Prison to Test My Love

The hotel lobby smelled like money. Fresh lilies, polished marble, and something else I couldn't name—maybe the scent of people who never worried about rent. I kept my head down and followed the event coordinator through a service corridor. My uniform was stiff and new. It still had the tag scratching the back of my neck.

"You'll be assisting Miss King," the coordinator said without looking back. "She's hosting a private birthday gala. Very high-profile. Just do what she asks and stay out of the way."

I nodded. I was good at staying out of the way.

Two and a half years in prison taught me that.

The coordinator stopped at a door marked Penthouse Suite and knocked twice. A voice called from inside, bright and careless. "Come in!"

I stepped into a room that could have held my entire apartment three times over. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the Manhattan skyline. A woman stood by the vanity in a silk robe, her hair already styled in perfect waves. She glanced at me the way you'd glance at furniture.

"You're the help?" she asked.

"Yes, ma'am. I'm here to assist with your gown and any—"

"Great. The dress is in the closet. Don't wrinkle it." She turned back to her phone.

I walked to the closet and pulled out the gown. It was beautiful. White silk with hand-embroidered lace along the bodice. The kind of dress I used to sketch in my notebook before everything fell apart. I carried it carefully to the steamer and started working out the folds.

Scarlett—Miss King—moved around the room like she owned the air itself. She did, probably. I pressed the silk and kept my mouth shut. The steam hissed softly. My hands moved on autopilot.

"Can you believe it?" Scarlett said suddenly, to no one in particular. "He gave me this suite for the whole weekend. Just because I asked."

I didn't answer. She wasn't talking to me.

She crossed to the vanity and opened a jewelry box. Diamonds glittered under the lights. She lifted a bracelet, then set it down. Lifted a ring. Set it down. Then her fingers closed around something green.

My breath stopped.

It was an emerald necklace. Antique. The gold chain was delicate, almost fragile. The stone caught the light and threw it back in sharp green sparks.

I knew that necklace.

My grandmother gave it to me the week before she died. She pressed it into my hands and said, "This is yours now. Keep it safe."

I left it with Brandon before I went to prison. I told him to hold onto it. I told him it was the only thing I had left of her.

Scarlett held it up to her throat and smiled at her reflection. "My lover collects beautiful old things," she said. "He's so generous."

The steamer was still hissing. I realized I'd stopped moving. My hands were frozen on the fabric.

"Something wrong?" Scarlett's eyes flicked to me in the mirror.

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

The door opened.

A man walked in. Tall. Tailored suit that probably cost more than I'd made in the last year. Dark hair, clean-shaven, expensive watch catching the light. He crossed the room in three strides and kissed Scarlett on the cheek.

"Ready for tonight?" he asked.

His voice hit me like cold water.

I knew that voice.

I looked up.

Brandon.

My husband.

He was checking his watch. Adjusting his cufflinks. Standing in a penthouse suite like he'd always belonged here. Like he hadn't told me two and a half years ago that he was just a driver trying to make rent. Like he hadn't let me go to prison to protect him.

He still hadn't looked at me.

Scarlett leaned into him, her fingers playing with the emerald necklace. "Do you like it on me?" she asked.

Brandon smiled. "Beautiful."

The world tilted.

Scarlett's eyes slid back to me. She saw my face. Saw me staring. Saw the way my hands had gone white on the steamer handle.

Her smile changed.

"Oh," she said softly. "You recognize it, don't you?"

I couldn't breathe.

She lifted the necklace off her throat. Held it up between us. The emerald swung gently on its chain.

"Old things break," she said. "That's what they do."

She snapped the chain.

The emerald hit the marble floor and shattered into green glass stars.

I didn't think. I moved.

I lunged at her. My hands reached for her throat, her face, anything. A scream tore out of me that didn't sound like my voice.

Arms grabbed me from behind. Security. Two men in black suits pinning my arms, dragging me back. I thrashed. I couldn't stop.

Scarlett stepped forward, her face twisted in theatrical fury. She lifted her foot—designer heel, sharp as a knife—and brought it down on my outstretched hand.

Bones cracked.

I screamed.

The pain was white and total. My hand bent wrong. The floor was cold under my cheek. Someone was shouting.

Footsteps ran down the corridor.

"What the hell is going on?" Brandon's voice, sharp and commanding.

He shoved past the security guards. Pulled Scarlett behind him. Turned to look down at the woman on the floor.

Our eyes met.

I watched his face change. Watched the color drain. Watched his mouth open and nothing come out.

"Sydney?" he whispered.

I didn't answer. I couldn't. My hand was screaming. The emerald fragments glittered on the floor beside my face. My grandmother's necklace. The only thing I had left.

Brandon's expression crumpled. He dropped to his knees. Reached for me.

I looked at him. At his expensive suit. At the penthouse behind him. At Scarlett standing in the doorway with my grandmother's broken necklace still in her hand.

I looked at my husband and felt nothing but cold, endless silence.

"Get away from me," I said.

My voice didn't shake.

It was the first true thing I'd said in two and a half years.
