Chapter 1 of My Husband Raised the Wrong Daughter After My Death

The cab smelled like fake pine and someone else's cigarettes. I sat in the back with the glass container balanced on my lap, still warm through the towel. Arroz con pollo. His college roommate's grandmother's recipe. The one he made for me on our third date, handwritten card and all.

I'd spent three hours on it. Saffron from the bodega on Atlantic. Chicken thighs from the butcher who knew my mother. I wanted to see his face when he opened the lid. Wanted to watch him smile the way he used to before my belly got too big and my ankles swelled and I started needing help getting out of chairs.

The driver let me out at Montgomery Tower. I didn't need to show ID anymore. Security waved me through. The private elevator opened with a key Adonis had given me six months ago. Back when he still said things like, 'I want you to surprise me.'

I stepped out on the forty-third floor. His office door was cracked open. Light spilling into the hallway. I could hear his voice, low and rough in a way I recognized.

I pushed the door wider.

Adonis had Skye Hernandez bent over his desk. Her skirt was rucked up around her waist. His hand was in her hair. They didn't hear me. They were too busy.

The glass container slipped. It hit the marble and exploded. Arroz con pollo everywhere. Saffron rice across the floor like something bleeding out.

They both turned.

Adonis said my name. His belt was undone. Skye's lipstick was smeared. She looked at me with something that wasn't even embarrassment. Just calculation.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. Something in my chest just stopped beating.

I turned and walked back to the elevator. Adonis called after me. I didn't look back. The doors closed on his voice and I watched the numbers descend and felt absolutely nothing.

---

He came to the penthouse that night with roses. White ones. My favorites, he said, like I'd forgotten.

'Emmeline, please. Let me explain.'

I sat on the couch with my hands folded over my belly. Eight months. Lily was kicking. I could feel her heel against my ribs.

'Go ahead,' I said.

He knelt in front of me. Took my hands. His eyes were wet.

'I didn't want to burden you,' he said. 'You've been so tired. The pregnancy's been hard. I just—I needed—'

'You needed to fuck your assistant.'

He flinched. 'It didn't mean anything. Emmeline, you're my wife. You're carrying my child. She's nothing.'

I looked at him. Really looked. At the jawline I used to trace with my fingers. The eyes I used to think I could read.

'Okay,' I said.

He blinked. 'Okay?'

'I need space. I'm going to stay at my parents' apartment for a while.'

'Emmeline—'

'Just for a while,' I said. 'I need to think.'

He nodded. Relief all over his face. He thought I was coming back. He actually thought I was coming back.

I let him think it.

---

The Brooklyn apartment still smelled like my mother's cooking. Phantom scent, maybe. She'd been gone three years. But I swore I could still smell her garlic and her cheap perfume.

I moved slow. Everything hurt now. My back. My hips. Lily was sitting so low I had to pee every twenty minutes.

I found the dry-cleaning receipt in Adonis's coat pocket on the fourth day. A shop two blocks from the apartment. I stared at it for a long time.

Then I went to check the bed.

Unmade. Sheets I didn't recognize. A wineglass in the sink with a lipstick print. Dark red. Skye's shade.

I walked to my mother's room. Pulled back the quilt she'd made by hand. Found a long dark hair on the pillow.

He brought her here.

To the one place I kept clean. The one place that was just mine. The one place that remembered what love actually looked like.

I sat on the edge of the bed. Put my hand on my belly. Lily kicked again, hard.

I didn't cry.

I just sat there in the November cold and let something finish dying.

---

The contractions started three days later. Fast and wrong. Too early. Way too early.

I was alone. Adonis was in the Hamptons for some charity thing. I'd told him not to come. Told him I needed more time.

The first one doubled me over in the kitchen. I grabbed the counter and breathed through it. Waited for it to pass.

The second one came five minutes later.

I called Logan. He was the only person I could call. The only person who'd ever just showed up without needing an explanation.

'Come now,' I said. 'It's happening.'

Then my water broke.

I made it to the bathroom. Barely. The pain was huge and animal and I couldn't think around it. I got on the floor. Grabbed towels. My mother's recipe book was on the tile where I'd left it that morning. I stared at her handwriting and pushed.

Lily came fast. Too fast. I caught her in my own hands. Cut the cord with kitchen scissors I'd sterilized in boiling water because some part of my brain was still working.

She screamed. Tiny and furious and alive.

I held her against my chest and shook so hard I thought I'd break apart.

Logan kicked the door in ten minutes later. Found me on the bathroom floor covered in blood with a newborn in my arms.

He didn't ask questions. Just wrapped us both in blankets and carried us to his car.

In the ambulance, I looked at him. His face was white. Scared.

'I'm not going back to him,' I said. 'And I'm not leaving her behind.'

Logan's jaw tightened. He took my hand.

'Then we won't,' he said.

I believed him.
