My Husband Protected His Mistress While I Lost Our Baby

Finley came to my condo every Tuesday and Thursday.

We kept things strictly business. He sat at my dining table with his laptop, going over code architecture and server costs. I sat opposite him, reviewing his risk models.

He was brilliant. His startup was going to be lethal to the Daniels Corporation.

Still, Finley had quiet eyes. He noticed things.

He noticed the locked metal box of my mother’s letters on the top bookshelf. He noticed that I drank my coffee black, bitter and scalding. When my phone screen lit up on the glass table with Ignacio’s name, he noticed how my jaw clenched before I swiped the call away.

Finley never asked questions. He never pressed.

Instead, he just showed up on time. One rainy Thursday, he set a brown paper bag between our laptops. It was spicy drunken noodles from a hole-in-the-wall Thai spot near campus.

"You mentioned you liked them last week," he said softly, scratching the back of his neck. "Eat before the noodles get cold."

I looked at the cardboard box, then at him. "Thank you, Finley."

He offered a small, quiet smile. "Don't skip meals, Winnie."

Two weeks later was the Fairmont Olympic Hotel’s annual charity gala.

I was still legally Mrs. Daniels, so I attended alone. I wore an emerald silk gown with clean lines. No jewelry except my mother’s pearl earrings.

The ballroom was packed with Seattle’s elite. Crystal glasses clinked. A string quartet played near the stage.

Then Ignacio walked in.

He didn't come alone. Rowan Meyer hung off his arm in a bright red dress. She looked smug, clinging to his tuxedo sleeve like a trophy. People whispered behind champagne flutes. Ignacio scanned the room, saw me, and lifted his chin. He wanted to show me that my absence meant nothing.

I took a slow sip of ice water and didn't move.

Suddenly, a loud screech of metal tore through the music.

Gasps erupted. High above the dance floor, a massive crystal chandelier groaned. One of the steel support cables snapped with a sound like a gunshot.

The crowd panicked. People screamed, scrambling backward in a frantic wave.

I stood near the edge of the dance floor, barely ten feet away from Ignacio and Rowan.

The second cable snapped.

The heavy fixture dropped like a stone. In that split second of pure terror, Ignacio didn't glance at me. He didn't even turn his head in my direction.

Without hesitation, Ignacio lunged forward and threw his entire body over Rowan, slamming her to the carpet to shield her from the blast.

The chandelier hit the parquet floor with a deafening crash.

Heavy glass and brass exploded outward like shrapnel. Shards pelted my gown and scratched the floor at my feet. Dust rose into the air.

I didn't duck. I didn't scream.

I stood there in the wreckage, watching my husband wrap himself completely around another woman.

A few feet away, a socialite lowered her iPhone. Her screen was glowing. She had caught the whole thing on video: the Daniels heir smothering his mistress in a desperate embrace, while his legal wife stood abandoned in the rain of glass.

I dusted a speck of plaster off my sleeve, turned around, and walked out into the cool night air.

Within twenty-four hours, the storm broke.

I met Marcus in an underground garage. He handed me a flash drive containing the complete affair dossier: hotel bills, private security footage from Rowan’s penthouse, and company credit card statements.

I combined Marcus's files with the chandelier video.

Then I hit send.

TMZ broke the story first. Within an hour, *Seattle Metropolitan Magazine*, Bloomberg, and every local news station picked it up.

**DANIELS HEIR SHIELDS MISTRESS WHILE WIFE LEFT EXPOSED.**

The headline blared across morning news tickers and social media. The video played on a loop on millions of phones: Ignacio tackling Rowan, leaving me to face falling glass alone.

Public outrage hit like a tidal wave. Boycotts started trending online.

When the market opened at nine-thirty, Daniels Corporation stock dropped like an anchor. By lunchtime, it plummeted eighteen percent. Billions of dollars in market cap vanished into thin air.

My phone rang with an unknown number. I answered and stayed silent.

Rowan’s shrill voice screamed through the speaker before Ignacio even managed to speak.

"You ruined everything, Ignacio!" she shrieked in the background. Her composure was completely gone. "Photographers are camping outside my lobby! Everyone knows! My mother is having a breakdown, and it’s your fault! You promised you'd protect me!"

"Rowan, shut up!" Ignacio shouted back, his voice ragged and strained. "The board is calling an emergency session right now! My grandfather is flying in from New York!"

He slammed a door on his end, breathing heavily into the phone.

"Winnie," he rasped, his arrogance replaced by raw panic. "Winnie, pick up. We need to issue a joint statement right now. Call a press conference. Tell them the video was a misunderstanding. Please, Winnie—"

"I don't issue statements for strangers," I said.

I hung up.

I opened my laptop, took a sip of my black coffee, and watched their stock ticker drop another two percent.
