Chapter 1 of My Husband Locked Me Away for His Mistress

I had come home early, carrying a paper bag from the pharmacy and a secret.

For six days, coffee had made me sick. That morning, I had stood in the executive restroom at the Lancaster Foundation with a plastic test trembling between my fingers.

Two pink lines had appeared before I finished counting to ten.

I bought three more tests on the drive home.

The security guard downstairs smiled when he saw me. “Mr. Hale said he would be working late.”

“So did I,” I said.

I was thinking about Damien’s face when I told him. I was thinking about the one thing that might finally make our marriage feel less careful.

Then I heard Sienna laugh behind our bedroom door.

Her laugh had always been easy to recognize. I had heard it in the back row of high school chemistry, in the apartment we shared during college, and over the phone the night she landed her first television role. I had defended that laugh when casting directors called it too loud.

Now it came from my bed.

Damien sat against the headboard, shirtless, one hand resting on Sienna’s waist. The diamond bracelet on her wrist was my birthday gift to her. The sheets twisted around their bodies were the ones I had ordered last month.

For one ridiculous second, I thought there had to be another explanation.

Sienna pulled the sheet over her breasts. “Evie.”

Damien did not move. His eyes traveled from my face to the pharmacy bag in my hand.

“What is that?” he asked.

I dropped it. Pregnancy tests scattered across the carpet.

The color left his face.

Sienna recovered first. She slid out of bed and reached for the red dress on the floor. “This is not how we wanted you to find out.”

I stared at her. “How did you want me to find out?”

She opened her mouth, but Damien said, “Leave us.”

Sienna paused while fastening her dress. She looked at him, not me, as if my bedroom belonged to both of them and I was the interruption.

“I’ll call you,” he told her.

She passed close enough for me to smell my own perfume on her skin. At the door, she touched my arm.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I slapped her hand away.

The door closed behind her.

Damien got dressed with the same controlled movements he used before a board meeting. Dark trousers. White shirt. No tie.

“How long?” I asked.

He buttoned one cuff. “Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Before the wedding.”

The room seemed to tilt, but I stayed standing.

Our wedding had been three years ago. Sienna had held my bouquet while I promised Damien everything. She had cried harder than my mother.

“You let her stand beside me.”

“I did.”

“You came to my bed after hers?”

His jaw tightened. “Do not ask questions if you cannot live with the answers.”

I laughed once. It sounded broken. “I built my life around you.”

“That was your choice.”

No one in our families had ever hidden how much I loved Damien Hale. His father, Victor, had been my father’s closest friend and business partner. When their car crashed on a rain-slick road, Victor died and my father survived with a shattered hip and a scar down his chest.

Damien was sixteen. His mother had died years earlier. My parents brought him into our home, gave him the room across from mine, and treated him as family.

He was quiet for months. I left food outside his door. I sat with him through nightmares. When boys at school called him a charity case, I broke one boy’s nose and accepted my suspension without regret.

At twenty-five, I told my parents I wanted to marry him. My father gave Damien a place in the company. I surrendered my own path to make room for his.

Damien looked around the bedroom as if measuring what he had won.

“Your father killed mine,” he said.

I went still. “What?”

“He was driving Victor out of the company. They fought in the car. Your father survived, buried the investigation, and came home pretending to be generous. He adopted me because guilt was cheaper than prison.”

“That is not true.”

“It is the only truth that matters.” His voice remained low. “I grew up in his house. I ate at his table. I thanked him while he watched me grieve.”

“My father loved yours.”

“Your father took everything from me. So I took the company he meant to leave you.”

The cruelty of it landed slowly.

“You married me for Lancaster Group.”

“For that. And for this.” He finally looked directly at me. “I wanted Henry Lancaster to watch his daughter choose me. I wanted you to love me enough that losing me would hurt.”

I pressed a hand to my stomach.

Something changed in his expression. He crossed the room, but I stepped back.

“Do not touch me.”

“Are you pregnant?”

“It's none of your business. Get out.”

He reached for the bag. I tried to pull it away. Pain flashed low in my abdomen, sharp enough to steal my breath.

The last thing I saw was Damien’s face losing its cold certainty as the floor rushed toward me.

I woke beneath hospital lights.

Damien sat beside the bed, elbows on his knees, his hands clasped tightly enough to whiten his knuckles.

A woman in blue scrubs checked the monitor. I recognized Dr. Nora Patel from the women’s clinic our foundation supported.

“You are eight weeks pregnant,” she said gently. “The ultrasound looks reassuring, but you have had some bleeding. Stress and dehydration have not helped. I want you resting for the next several days.”

My eyes burned.

There was a baby.

After Dr. Patel left, Damien moved his chair closer.

“I will make sure you and the baby are safe,” he said.

I turned my face away.

“You will come home. You will rest. Sienna will not be there.”

“Will she be in another house you paid for with my money?”

His silence answered me.

I closed my eyes. “I want my parents.”

“Not tonight.”

I looked at him. “You do not get to decide that.”

His hand settled on the rail of my bed. “Until the doctor says the pregnancy is stable, I am not letting anyone upset you.”

“You are the person upsetting me.”

A knock sounded. Sienna stood in the doorway, tearful and pale, a red mark circling her wrist.

“She called me after you collapsed,” Damien said.

Sienna hugged herself. “I want to apologize.”

I stared at her. “You are really good at performance."

Sienna began to cry.

Damien stood. “Enough.”

By the time I was discharged, my phone was missing. Damien said it must have been lost at the hospital. At home, two security men waited in the foyer, and the keypad on the east-wing door had been changed.

“This is not rest,” I said. “This is imprisonment.”

“It is temporary.” Damien placed my suitcase inside the bedroom. “When you are calm, we will discuss what happens next.”

“And if I refuse?”

His gaze dropped to my stomach.

“You will not risk my child.”

The lock clicked behind him.

I stood alone in the room where I had slept as a girl, one hand over the life inside me.

For the first time since I was sixteen, I understood exactly what Damien was.

And for the first time, I was afraid I might not survive loving him.
