Chapter 1 of My Husband Let His Mistress Replace Me

The Hansen Group's annual gala was always held at The Plaza. I knew this because I'd been to five of them. Six, counting tonight. The ballroom glittered under chandeliers that cost more than most people's houses. I stood in the coat check line in my navy dress—the one Cal said made me look elegant—and watched women in jewel-toned gowns glide past me like I wasn't there.

I smoothed my skirt. The fabric was nice. I'd chosen it carefully. But standing here, I felt like I'd shown up to the wrong party.

"Leah." Eleanor Hansen appeared beside me, her smile thin and bright. She wore emerald silk and diamonds at her throat. "You look lovely, dear."

"Thank you, Eleanor." I never called her Mom. She never asked me to.

She touched my elbow, steering me away from the ballroom entrance. "There's been a small seating adjustment. Family seating is quite limited this year, you understand. We've placed you at table twelve."

I blinked. "Table twelve?"

"With some of our junior marketing staff. Bright young people. You'll have a wonderful time." Her fingers tightened on my arm, gentle and absolute. "The main table is for investors and board members only. I'm sure you understand."

I looked past her into the ballroom. The main table sat on a raised platform, draped in cream linen. I could see the place cards from here. Cal's name. Richard and Eleanor Hansen. Karina Torres.

No card for me.

Cal stood near the bar, laughing at something Karina said. He wore his charcoal suit, the one I'd picked up from the tailor last week. He looked handsome. He always did.

He glanced up. Our eyes met across the room.

I waited for him to say something. To walk over. To tell his mother this was a mistake.

He looked away.

Eleanor patted my arm. "Enjoy the evening, dear." She drifted toward the main table, her dress shimmering under the lights.

I stood there, holding my small clutch, feeling the heat crawl up my neck. A waiter passed with champagne. I took a glass I didn't want.

Table twelve was in the back corner, near the kitchen doors. The marketing assistants were polite. They asked what I did. I said I helped with recipe development. They nodded and went back to talking about a campaign launch. I sipped champagne that tasted like nothing and watched my husband across the room.

Cal stayed close to Karina all night. He pulled out her chair. He leaned in when she spoke, his hand resting on the back of her seat. When the emcee introduced her as "the visionary behind the Hansen brand's recent success," Cal started the applause.

I set down my glass before I could throw it.

Dinner was served in courses. The fourth course arrived on white porcelain plates, garnished with microgreens. I recognized it immediately. My grandmother's braised short ribs. The recipe she'd taught me on a Sunday afternoon in her tiny kitchen, her hands guiding mine as I learned to balance the soy and star anise.

The emcee's voice boomed over the sound system. "Tonight's featured entrée is a Hansen family signature—a dish perfecting over three generations, representing the culinary tradition that defines our brand."

Applause rippled through the ballroom.

Three generations. My grandmother's hands. My memory. Their menu.

I looked down at my plate. I didn't touch it.

When the gala ended, I waited by the entrance while valets brought cars around. Rain hammered the awning, turning the street into a river of black water. I didn't have an umbrella. I'd thought Cal would bring the car.

I pulled out my phone to call him. Then I saw him.

He came through the lobby doors, umbrella already open. I stepped forward, relief flooding through me.

He walked right past me.

I froze.

Cal moved toward Karina, who stood under the awning with her arms wrapped around herself. He held the umbrella over her head, his hand settling on her shoulder. He said something I couldn't hear. She laughed. He guided her toward a waiting black car, shielding her from every drop.

I stood in the rain.

Water soaked through my dress, my hair, my skin. I watched the car pull away, red taillights blurred by the downpour. My phone buzzed. A text from Cal: *Got Karina home safe. Catch an Uber. See you later.*

I stared at the screen until the rain made it unreadable.

I don't remember the Uber ride. I remember walking into the brownstone, dripping onto the marble floor Eleanor had imported from Italy. I remember climbing the stairs, my shoes squelching. I remember sitting on the bathroom floor, still in my wet dress, pulling my grandmother's recipe notebook from the fireproof box in the closet.

The pages were stained and soft, her handwriting looping across each one. I ran my fingers over the ink.

Then I pulled out my phone and searched for intellectual property attorneys in Manhattan.

Sophia Reyes answered on the third ring. Her voice was sharp and awake despite the hour. "This is Sophia."

"My name is Leah Parker," I said. My voice sounded steady. I didn't feel steady. "I need to file patents on a collection of recipes. And I need to do it before my husband's company signs a fifty-million-dollar investor deal in three weeks."

There was a pause. Then: "Tell me everything."

I talked for forty-seven minutes. I told her about my grandmother. About the recipes I'd shared with Cal's family, believing we were building something together. About tonight—the gala, the seat, the rain, the umbrella that wasn't for me.

When I finished, Sophia was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "Do you have documentation? Original copies? Proof of origin?"

I looked down at the notebook in my lap. "Yes."

"Good. We have work to do."

I hung up and sat on the cold tile, still soaked, still shaking. But not from the rain.

I wasn't crying.

I was done crying.
