My Husband Hired Him to Seduce Me

My fingers crushed the warm black earpiece. Victor's voice buzzed against my palm, a tiny, tinny sound leaking into the dead silence of the Morgan House VIP lounge. Muffled jazz from the charity preview barely penetrated the thick walls. The three of us stood rigid.

I dropped the device. It landed in the center of the property waiver spread across the glass coffee table.

"Are you going to quote a price for the air I breathe next, Victor?"

Victor lunged for the earpiece. I leaned back and raised my phone. The flash caught his hand, the black device, and the legal header in one frame.

"Delete that," he ordered.

"It is already backed up to a secure server," I lied. "Try again."

"Don't sign," Damian muttered.

It was the first time the man in the charcoal suit spoke without a line fed through that speaker. The wine stain on his sleeve had dried into a dark patch. He stood near the leather sofa, his shoulders tense, watching me with an expression I could no longer trust.

"Which exact minute did you stop acting?" I asked.

He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

"She isn't signing because she thinks this is some tragic romance," Victor said. He straightened his cuffs, ignoring Damian. "You are filing for divorce over boredom and loneliness, Sloane. Pathetic. You think a judge cares that I work late?"

"I think a judge cares about fraud."

"It is not fraud to protect my assets from a greedy spouse." Victor paced behind the table. "I built this empire. You restore old paintings. Do not equate your hobby with my investments."

"My cottage covered your margin call five years ago. You would have been bankrupt without me."

"Ancient history."

I unclasped my clutch, pulled out a black restaurant gift card, and tossed it onto the table.

"Our fifth anniversary," I said. "Your assistant sent this with a note that read client dinner."

Victor did not glance at it. He tapped Clause Eleven of the agreement.

"Read the language. Marital infidelity voids your redemption rights to the Lake Geneva cottage. You also forfeit the one-point-seven million in our joint investment account." His voice settled into the clinical cadence he used at board meetings. "You played around. Now you pay for it."

"I kissed a man you hired. You staged those photographs."

"Prove it. The board will see a cheating wife. They hate scandal. Your restoration contracts will be frozen by noon tomorrow."

I picked up the silver fountain pen beside the papers and held the nib over the signature line.

Victor smiled. He adjusted his tie, already celebrating.

I pressed the pen to the heavy paper. Instead of my name, I wrote four words across the blank space: coercion through hired surveillance.

His smile vanished. He snatched the document and crumpled one edge.

"You are making a massive mistake."

Damian stepped forward. "Sloane, listen to me."

"Stay away."

He raised the gray handkerchief he had used after the wine spill. The fabric twisted. A glint of glass caught the overhead light.

A pinhole camera had been stitched into the corner.

Nausea hit me hard. He had recorded the spill, the dance, and every look I had mistaken for privacy.

"How much?" I demanded.

Damian tried to lower the handkerchief. I caught his wrist.

"Tell me the contract amount. What was the price of ruining my life?"

His eyes moved to Victor, then back to me. "It was a job at first."

"And then what? A hobby?"

"One hundred and eighty thousand," Victor answered for him. "Cheaper than litigation. He did excellent work until five minutes ago."

A laugh broke from me, sharp and empty. I released Damian's wrist.

He placed the handkerchief on the table beside the ruined contract. "The raw footage isn't only in his possession."

Victor's head snapped toward him.

Damian kept talking. "The camera transmitted to my local recorder and a cloud mirror. The earpiece stored the incoming audio. Every instruction Victor gave me has a timestamp."

"You signed a confidentiality agreement," Victor said.

"You ordered surveillance of your wife inside private spaces. That agreement will not protect you."

"Do not pretend this is conscience," I said. "You took his money."

"I did."

The absence of an excuse made me angrier.

Victor picked up his phone and opened an email draft. Eight terrace photographs appeared as attachments. The recipient list included every gallery director and our three largest collectors.

"The message is scheduled for six in the morning," he said. "The subject line reads Emergency Conduct Review. If Sloane signs tonight, I delete it."

I photographed the screen before he could turn it away.

Victor caught my wrist. "That is privileged corporate correspondence."

"Take your hand off me."

Damian moved between us. Victor released me, but his smile returned.

"You think he is protecting you?" Victor asked. "Ask him how many days he studied your schedule. Ask him who gave him access to the practice hall, the warehouse, and this hotel."

I looked at Damian.

He did not deny any of it.

"Where are the files?" I asked.

"My office safe. The access keys are physical. Victor cannot wipe them remotely."

"Then hand them over now."

"I don't have them here."

Of course he did not. He had given me another promise that required me to follow him into another room.

I scooped the earpiece into my clutch and took the damaged waiver with it.

Victor stepped toward the door. "If you leave without signing, the clock keeps running."

"Then you should enjoy the next five hours," I said. "They may be the last hours you control the story."

I pulled the door open. Beyond it, the charity preview still glittered as if nothing had happened. Donors laughed beneath chandeliers while my marriage was converted into a transaction behind a locked door. I fixed that contrast in my mind. It would matter when Victor later claimed the confrontation had been spontaneous.

Damian planted one hand against the frame, blocking my path without touching me.

"Sloane," he said, "I have the leverage you need."
