Chapter 1 of My Husband Handed My Equity to His Missing Ex

I set the last fork myself. Not the caterer, not the housekeeper — me. Eight years of my life led to this table, and I wanted my fingerprints on every inch of it.

The Bellevue house glowed. Rain tapped the windows, soft and steady, the kind of Seattle rain that never quite commits to a storm. I'd pushed Magdalena's wheelchair to the head of the table myself, tucked a blanket over her knees, and she'd patted my hand with her good one and said, slow and dry, "You did this. Don't let him forget it."

I'd laughed. I actually laughed, that night.

Lawson stood at the head of the table opposite his mother, champagne raised, gold rimming his cheeks in the candlelight. "To Barnes Dynamics," he said, "and to my son, Stanford's newest headache."

Memphis grinned into his sparkling cider, eighteen and lanky and grown almost overnight, the boy whose wrist I'd once watched a doctor set while I held my own arm in a sling beside him. "To Dad's terrible jokes," he said, and everyone laughed, and I reached under the collar of my dress and pressed my grandmother's ring flat against my sternum, the way I always did when something felt too good to be safe.

The doorbell rang.

Lawson frowned, glass still raised. "Are we expecting anyone?"

I wasn't. I knew every name on that guest list because I'd written it.

He went to answer it, still smiling, still holding his glass, and I heard the door open, heard the rain rush in louder for a second, and then I heard nothing at all — no words, just a silence with weight to it.

I got up. I don't know why. Some part of me already knew.

She was barefoot on the porch. Soaked through, her dress plastered to her like a second skin, dark hair dripping down a face I recognized from photographs I'd once made myself stop looking at. Kyra Mendoza. The woman who wired four million dollars out of this family and out of this company and vanished into a life none of us were supposed to survive.

"I don't—" Her voice cracked, thin and trembling. "I don't remember anything. Where I've been. What I did. I don't remember any of it."

And then she fell.

Lawson caught her.

I watched his face do something I had never once seen it do for me — not on our wedding day, not the night I told him I was pregnant, not the night I told him, quietly, in a hospital hallway, that I wasn't anymore. His whole face opened up, undefended, raw with a tenderness I didn't know he still had in him.

Behind me, Memphis stood frozen at the bottom of the stairs, twelve years old again in his eyes, staring at the mother he hadn't seen since the year his leg was in a cast and hers was the name nobody said out loud.

I set my champagne glass down on the mantel. Very quietly. It didn't even clink.

From her wheelchair, Magdalena caught my eye. She shook her head, slow, deliberate — *don't*, that shake said, *don't do what you're about to do, which is nothing* — but she didn't speak either. None of us did.

That night Lawson put her in my guest suite. My six-hundred-thread sheets. My reading lamp.

"It's only temporary," he said, already half asleep, his back to me. "Only humane, Diana. You understand."

I understood the words. I lay awake a long time listening to him breathe, slow and easy, a man with a clean conscience, in a house I'd built with money from my dead grandmother's sold house and years of my own blood, and I felt, for the first time in eight years, like a guest in it myself.

At five the next morning I sat at the kitchen island with black coffee and my laptop, scrolling through the S-1 filing one more time. *Diana Hunt, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Architect.* My name. My work. In black and white, finally, permanently, days from the bell.

Kyra padded in wearing my cashmere robe. She poured herself coffee from the pot I'd made, didn't ask, sat down across from me like she'd done it every morning of her life.

"You've taken such good care of everything," she said, soft, fragile, her eyes catching mine and sliding away like she couldn't bear the weight of them. "Lawson is so lucky."

I looked at her. Really looked — the calculated tremor in her hands, the robe belted just so, the amnesia that hadn't stopped her from finding the good coffee mugs on the first try.

I said nothing.

I closed my laptop, took my coffee, and went back to my room.

But I started paying attention that morning. To all of it.
