Chapter 1 of My Husband Handed Me Divorce Papers for His Mistress

The suite at The Peninsula smelled like white peonies and champagne. I'd picked both myself. I'd picked the dress too—deep green, the color Alexander once said he loved on me, back when he still noticed colors on my body. Three years married tonight. New Year's Eve. I stood by the window and watched the city hold its breath before midnight, and I told myself something stupid. I told myself tonight he'd finally choose me out loud.

He came in forty minutes late, snow still melting on his shoulders. He kissed my cheek without really looking at me, already reaching for his phone.

"A few friends are downstairs," he said. "Quick toast before midnight. You don't mind, right?"

I minded. I said, "Of course not."

The bar wasn't a few friends. It was thirty people, loud and glittering, and at the center of it, laughing with her head tipped back, was Kehlani Guzman. I knew her name before I ever knew her face—Alexander had said it in his sleep once, years ago, and I'd told myself it meant nothing. She wore a black dress that cost more than my first car, and on her wrist sat a diamond bracelet I recognized instantly, because I'd stood in that same boutique eight months ago and been told, so sorry, that piece is one of a kind, we can't source another in her size.

I looked down at my own wrist. The bracelet Alexander gave me tonight, wrapped in blue velvet, presented with a small private smile like it was some kind of secret between us. I'd believed it was diamond. Under the bar lights, it suddenly looked dull. It felt light. Weightless, like it wasn't attached to anything real.

"Wheeler!" Marcus Webb's voice cut through the noise. He was Alexander's college roommate, the kind of man who thought volume was charisma. He held up a box, shook it so everyone could hear the rattle inside. "Come settle a bet."

He tore it open. Condoms, comically oversized, spilled onto the bar top. Kehlani covered her mouth, eyes bright over her fingers.

"So the real question," Marcus said, grinning at the crowd, "is whether Ward here actually uses these with his wife, or if she's just, you know. Furniture. The help that keeps his house nice."

The laughter came fast and ugly. Kehlani's shoulders shook with it. I turned to Alexander, waiting for the version of him I'd married—the one who used to stand between me and anything sharp. Instead I found a man rubbing the back of his neck, jaw tight, eyes anywhere but mine. Not angry on my behalf. Just uncomfortable. Caught.

Something in my chest went very quiet. Not loud, not shattering. Just quiet, like a machine finally switched off.

I walked to the bar. I picked up the box.

"Kehlani." My voice came out even. Steady. The same voice I used to use calling out incision sites in a cold operating room, a lifetime ago. "Blow these up. Every single one. Right here."

The room went still. Somewhere a glass clinked and stopped.

Kehlani's mask slipped—just a flicker, something raw and startled underneath the softness. Then she laughed, a small breathy thing. "That's—I don't think that's—"

"Every one," I said. I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice. I just waited.

The silence stretched long enough to hurt. Then, red-faced, she picked up the first one.

I watched her inflate all nine, one by one, hands shaking, mascara starting to run at the corners of her eyes, while thirty of Alexander's friends stared in a silence so total I could hear the ice melting in someone's glass. Nobody laughed now.

Alexander grabbed my elbow before the ninth balloon hit the bar top. "Claire. Hallway. Now."

He pulled me past the coat check into the quiet corridor and produced an envelope from his jacket like he'd been carrying it all night, waiting for the right moment. Divorce papers. All assets to me—the loft, the accounts, everything.

"Her mother's sick," he said, in the smooth, reasonable voice he used for investors. "Really sick, Claire. Old-fashioned. Can't stand the idea of Kehlani loving a married man. It's just paperwork. One month. We refile after, nothing changes."

He said it the way you'd ask someone to grab your dry cleaning.

I studied him—the easy set of his mouth, the absolute certainty in his eyes that I would simply agree, the way I always had. Three years of agreeing.

"Give me a pen," I said.

He blinked, surprised for half a second, then smiled and handed one over, already looking past me toward the bar.

I signed my full legal name. Claire Wheeler. Not Mrs. Ward. Wheeler.

He kissed my forehead like I'd done him a favor and walked back toward the noise, toward her.

I stood alone in that hallway holding the papers, and for the first time in three years, I felt like exactly myself.
