Chapter 1 of My Husband Gave My Job to His Pregnant Mistress

The restaurant smelled like warm bread and expensive candles. Eleven floors above Midtown, the city glittered through the windows like someone had spilled a jar of lights. Our table was the best one in the room. White roses. Champagne I hadn't touched. A small card that said Happy Birthday, Hallie in gold script.

I had a husband who was twenty minutes late and a best friend who was already on her third glass of Pinot.

Kayla Tucker in her element.

"Okay, okay—look at this one." She leaned across the table and angled her phone toward me. She'd been showing me vacation photos for the last ten minutes. Croatia. A sunset. A plate of octopus. She swiped left and laughed at something. Then she swiped again.

She stopped laughing.

I looked at the screen.

It was a terminal corridor. Bright and wide, the kind of fluorescent light that flattens everyone's face. And there she was—Brinley Rivera, Phillip's intern, smiling her practiced smile at whoever was taking the photo. Behind her, a departure board. London Heathrow.

Kayla pulled the phone back fast. "That was—sorry, that's from someone's story. I wasn't—"

"It's fine," I said.

I set down my wine glass. Very carefully. The kind of careful that comes from needing something to do with your hands.

Three weeks ago, Phillip sat across from me at our kitchen table and told me the London fellowship had been restructured. Budget realignment, he said. Nothing personal. These things happen.

I had believed him.

The chair beside me scraped back. Phillip arrived in a cloud of good cologne and an easy apology about traffic. He ordered a scotch before he even sat down. His second of the night, I'd later learn. He kissed my cheek and called me sweetheart in front of everyone at the table, and I watched his mouth move and felt something very quiet go very wrong inside me.

"Phillip." My voice came out even. Calm. It surprised me. "Can you explain something?"

I looked at Kayla. She hesitated, then turned her phone around and slid it across the white tablecloth.

Phillip glanced at the screen. One second. Two. His jaw didn't move but his right hand drifted to his left wrist, fingers finding his cufflink, rotating it once. I'd watched him do that a hundred times. Adjusting. Recalibrating.

"These decisions come from above both of us, sweetheart." His voice was warm and patient, the voice he used in board meetings when someone asked a question he considered beneath him. "Brinley's metrics just happened to align better this cycle. It wasn't personal."

Sweetheart.

Not personal.

The candlelight shifted. Someone at another table laughed at something. The restaurant kept moving, kept breathing, utterly indifferent to the fact that something inside me had just broken clean off.

Not with a crack. Not with heat or noise. Just—gone. Like a thread pulled loose from a seam.

I looked at the birthday cake on the edge of the table. White frosting. A single candle someone had already lit and blown out on my behalf. Very thoughtful.

I picked up the plate.

I looked at Phillip.

He started to say something else.

I pressed the cake into his face.

Not hard. Not frantically. Just—firmly, completely, with both hands and my full attention. The frosting went up his nose. A chunk of sponge caught on his collar. The restaurant went silent the way rooms go silent when something real has just happened in them.

I set the plate back down.

I picked up my coat. My handbag. I didn't look at Kayla but I heard her make a sound that wasn't quite a word.

I walked out.

The November air hit me like a wall. I stood on the sidewalk for a moment, breathing it in. Cabs. A food cart on the corner. Someone's music bleeding from a passing window. New York, indifferent and enormous, going about its evening.

I didn't cry. I didn't feel like crying.

I felt like writing things down.

---

Phillip didn't come home that night.

I sat at the kitchen table with a legal pad and a pen and I made a list. Not of how I felt. Feelings could wait. I wrote down facts. Every inconsistency I'd filed away and told myself meant nothing. The fellowship he said was cancelled. The quarterly numbers that came back lower than I knew my performance warranted. The way Brinley always seemed to know things before I did. Small things. Tiny things. The kind that only look like a pattern once you decide to look.

Two pages. Both sides.

When I was done, I folded the paper twice, slid it into the inside pocket of my work bag, and went to bed.

I slept six hours.

I did not cry.

In the morning, I would start from the beginning. I would find out exactly what had been done to me, and exactly how, and by whom. I would be patient and thorough and I would not make a single move until I knew everything.

But for now, I closed my eyes.

And I let the silence do its work.
