Chapter 1 of My Fiancé Wired Our Dream Home Money to Another Woman

I came home early because of the wire transfer.

That was the whole reason. The deposit deadline was tomorrow, and I wanted to sit at the kitchen table, open the joint portal, and watch $320,000 move from our account to the escrow on the riverfront condo we had spent seven years saving for. I had the routing number memorized. I had the confirmation email drafted and waiting.

I set my bag down by the door. The apartment smelled like the pasta Philip had made for lunch. His jacket was on the back of the couch. Everything was exactly where it always was.

I opened my laptop, pulled up the banking portal, and logged in.

The balance read $0.00.

I stared at it.

I refreshed the page. The number didn't change. I clicked through to the transaction history. One outgoing wire, timestamped 11:47 a.m. Recipient: S. Hayes. Amount: $320,000.00.

Three hundred and twenty thousand dollars. Gone before noon.

Philip was in the kitchen. I could hear him scrolling — that faint, rhythmic tap of a thumb on glass. I walked to the doorway and stood there for a moment, just looking at him. He was leaning against the counter, phone in hand, completely unbothered. He looked up when he heard me.

"Hey, you're home early."

"The balance is zero," I said.

He set his phone face-down on the counter. Not quickly. Not guiltily. Just the easy, deliberate motion of a man setting something aside to have a conversation. "Yeah, I was going to tell you tonight." He said it the way you'd say *I forgot to pick up milk.* "Skyler filed for bankruptcy last week. She had no one, Lila. I couldn't just — "

"You wired our entire down payment to Skyler Hayes."

"She had nothing." His voice took on that particular warmth he used when he was explaining something he considered obvious. "You know how I feel about leaving people with nothing. And honestly —" he paused, like he was doing me a favor by continuing — "you have the trust fund your mom set aside. We can use that to cover the deposit. It's not ideal, but we'll be fine."

He picked his phone back up.

I stood in the doorway for three more seconds. I counted them. Then I went back to the kitchen table, sat down, and closed the banking portal.

I opened a blank spreadsheet.

I started with January, seven years ago. The first shared utility bill. Thirty-eight dollars, split down the middle, except I had paid the whole thing that month because Philip's card was declined and he'd said he'd get the next one. I remembered because I had written it in my notebook. I still had the notebook.

I got up, retrieved it from the shelf, and kept going.

I worked through dinner. Philip ordered takeout and put a container next to my laptop without saying anything. I didn't touch it. I worked through the grocery runs, the weekend trips, the birthday dinners where I'd quietly covered the difference when he came up short. I worked through the utilities and the parking and the three months I paid his share of the rent while he was between jobs and told me not to worry, he'd make it right.

I had the numbers for all of it. I always had the numbers.

By midnight, the spreadsheet was forty-seven rows long. Philip was in the doorway. I could feel him watching me, that slow dawning unease of a man who has finally noticed the temperature in the room.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"Accounting," I said.

He didn't ask again.

I finished the last row, formatted the totals, and saved the document with a date stamp. Then I closed the laptop and went to bed. I lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling and did not cry. There was nothing to cry about. The numbers were clear. The situation was clear. I had spent seven years building something with a man who had never once looked at the foundation to see whose hands were holding it up.

Now I knew.

In the morning, I waited until Philip left for work. Then I called my attorney.

It took eleven minutes to begin the process of separating every joint legal and financial tie we had. My attorney had a calm, professional voice that I appreciated very much in that moment.

After I hung up, I opened my email. There was a standing offer from a firm in New York — a Wall Street investment bank that had reached out eight months ago, before the condo, before the deposit, back when I had told myself I had reasons to stay in Seattle.

I typed four sentences. I confirmed the position. I asked about a start date.

Then I opened a new browser tab and booked a red-eye to JFK for Friday night.

I closed the laptop, smoothed my hands flat on the table, and sat in the quiet of the apartment for a long moment.

Outside, the river was silver in the morning light. I had loved the idea of living near that water. I had loved it for years.

I picked up my bag and went to work.
