Chapter 1 of My Fiancé Stole From Me to Buy Her Lingerie

Tuesday nights belong to my spreadsheet.

It's a habit I never broke, even after Connor moved in. Bills, groceries, subscriptions, the joint card. I sit at the kitchen island, pour a small glass of pinot, and reconcile everything down to the cent. Connor calls it my "accountant cosplay." He says it from the couch, eyes on the TV, never offering to help.

Tonight, the apartment is quiet. He's at the gym. Rain taps the window like someone keeping time. I open the Costco app first because it's the easiest, the boring one.

It isn't boring tonight.

I scroll, then stop. Scroll again. Stop.

Two lingerie sets. La Perla. One in red, one in black. A bulk box of Trojan condoms. La Mer moisturizer. A Dyson hair tool.

I never bought any of it.

My hand stays on the trackpad. The cursor floats above the receipt like it's waiting for permission to land. I click. The charges are real. Linked to my Visa. The dates are right there in clean little rows.

October 14th. October 27th. November 3rd. November 9th.

I pull up my work calendar in another tab. October 14th, I was in a client pitch from nine to seven. October 27th, I flew to Chicago. November 3rd, I was at my desk eating a sad salad and answering emails until ten p.m.

I was not buying lingerie.

My stomach does a slow, cold turn. I tell myself there's an explanation. There has to be. Maybe Connor surprised me. Maybe the box is sitting in a closet, wrapped, waiting. Maybe.

But my fingers are already moving. Settings. Membership. Authorized Household Member.

There she is.

Demi Ramirez. Added July 19th. Relationship: Sister.

I read the name three times. I say it out loud once, just to hear how it sounds in our apartment.

"Demi."

It sounds like nothing. It sounds like a stranger.

Connor doesn't have a sister. Connor has a younger brother named Eli who lives in Albany and a mother named Mavis who calls him every Sunday and a father who left when he was nine. I know his family the way you know your own teeth. There is no Demi.

I screenshot the membership page. I screenshot every charge. I AirDrop everything to my laptop, then upload it to a private folder in my cloud. I name the folder something boring. "Q4 Tax Docs."

Then I close the app, close the laptop, and sit in the dark.

I don't cry. I notice that, distantly, the way you might notice the refrigerator humming. The thing inside my chest is not grief yet. It's something colder. Something with edges.

I sit there until I hear Connor's key in the lock.

He walks in smelling like cold air and protein shake. He kisses the top of my head and says, "You're sitting in the dark again, weirdo." He flips on the light. He doesn't notice the laptop. He doesn't notice anything.

"Long day," I say. My voice comes out even. Smooth as glass.

"Order Thai?" he asks.

"Sure."

I watch him pull out his phone and tap through the menu. He has the easy hands of a man who has never once been afraid.

---

For the next three evenings, I become quiet in a way Connor doesn't recognize as quiet. I smile when he tells me about his day. I laugh at the right places. At night, after he falls asleep with one arm draped over my hip, I slide out from under it and go to the kitchen with my laptop.

I build a spreadsheet.

Column A: Date. Column B: Amount. Column C: Vendor. Column D: Notes. Column E: My location at the time of charge.

The rows multiply. Eight months back, the pattern is already there if you know how to look. A Saturday brunch at a place I've never been. A hotel charge in Hudson that he told me was a "boys' trip." Two hundred dollars at a nail salon in Williamsburg. Five hundred at a lingerie boutique I have never set foot in.

It isn't sloppy. That's what gets me. The charges are spaced. Calibrated. He knows exactly when I look and when I don't. He has built his betrayal around my habits.

I think, very calmly: he studied me.

Thursday morning, Connor strolls into the kitchen in his sweats and says, "Hey, Mom wants to know if we're coming up for Thanksgiving. She's already buying the bird."

I look up from my coffee and smile.

"I'd love to," I say.

He grins. "Yeah? She'll be happy."

"Tell her I'll bring a pie."

He kisses my forehead on the way to the shower. I sit there listening to the water run and feel something in me settle into place like a bolt sliding home.

---

Friday morning, the car packed, I lock myself in the bathroom and text Rachel everything. The Costco screenshots. The spreadsheet. The name.

My phone rings before I can put it down.

"Karter." Her voice is low. Steady. "Are you safe right now?"

"I'm fine."

"Where is he?"

"Loading the car."

She doesn't say anything for a second. I hear her breathing. Then: "Listen to me. Two things. Don't confront him yet. Not tonight, not in the car, not when you get there. You have one shot at this and it has to land clean."

"Okay."

"And I'm texting you Sylvia Grant's number right now. She's an attorney. She's mine. She's good. You call her Monday."

My phone buzzes against my ear. Contact saved.

"Karter," Rachel says. "You don't break. You build the case."

"I know."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

I hang up. I check my jacket pocket. Pepper spray, small and cool, tucked beside my keys. I zip the pocket closed.

Connor calls from downstairs that the car is ready.

I smile at myself in the mirror.

"Coming," I say.
