My Fiancé Ran, So I Took His Father Instead

Harlow POV:

The silence that followed my declaration was absolute. It was heavier than the music, louder than the laughter. The entire clubhouse held its breath.

Then, the explosion.

A tidal wave of noise crashed over me. Disbelieving curses, wild whoops, and the sharp, piercing whistle of a dozen men who smelled blood in the water.

Vivian's hand flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with shock, but the shock was quickly replaced by something else. A calculating, thoughtful glint.

I saw the two other Carlisle cousins, Roman and Spencer, their usual smirks wiped clean off their faces. The amusement they'd felt at my expense had curdled into disbelief and a flicker of disappointment. They had wanted me, had circled like vultures, but my eyes had never been for them.

My entire world had narrowed to one man.

Frederick 'Prez' Carlisle.

He moved. Slowly, deliberately, he raised a hand.

And just like that, the chaos ceased. The rowdy, lawless hall fell silent at a single gesture. That was his power. The power of a President.

He rose from his chair, a mountain of a man, blocking the light. The pressure of his presence was a physical thing as he walked toward the stage.

My palms were slick with sweat. My heart was a frantic drum against my ribs. This was it. My only way out. I couldn't back down.

He stopped at the edge of the stage, looking up at me. His eyes were like a hawk's, sharp and piercing, as if he could see right through my skin to the desperate, scheming creature beneath.

"Do you know what you're saying, girl?" His voice was a low rumble, like gravel scraping over stone. Each word held an unshakable weight.

"I know exactly what I'm saying." I forced myself to meet his gaze. "Colby's betrayal left the Serpents' honor in the mud with his own. As President, it's your duty to clean up the mess."

A single eyebrow arched. He was surprised by my directness.

An older member with a grizzled beard stood up, his voice booming. "This is against the rules! She can't just demand the President!"

"Why should Prez have to answer for his fool of a son?" another shouted.

Before Frederick could speak, Vivian's voice cut through the tension. It wasn't loud, but it carried. "Why not?"

All eyes turned to her. She stood, her posture regal. "Harlow is right. This is a disgrace to the Carlisle name, and to this club."

She looked at her son, her eyes pleading. "It's time someone cleaned up this mess. Besides, it's past time you had an Old Lady, Frederick."

My heart seized on her words. I had gambled correctly. More than anyone, this mother wanted her powerful, solitary son to finally settle down.

Frederick's gaze shifted from his mother back to me, more intense than before.

This was the moment. I had to give him a reason he couldn't refuse.

I leaned forward, lowering my voice so only he could hear me over the hum of the speakers. "The whispers say the President has no interest in women. An old war wound, they say."

I saw it. A flicker. A tightening in his jaw. The pressure in the air dropped.

I pushed on, my voice barely a whisper. "I don't care about that. I don't need a husband. I need a title. A sanctuary. A position that will let me survive and make the man who betrayed me pay."

"I can be your perfect shield, President. An Old Lady who asks for nothing you can't, or won't, give."

I laid my ambition bare before him. It was a gamble on his character, betting he would value my raw honesty over being repulsed by my scheming.

He stared at me for a long, silent moment. So long I thought I had lost.

Just as my composure was about to shatter, the corner of his mouth twitched. A ghost of a smile.

"Interesting," he murmured. Then he turned to the silent, waiting crowd. His voice, when it came, was the voice of a President making a decree.

"What she said. I agree."

He let the words hang in the air, then repeated them, louder, a clear proclamation.

"From now on, Harlow Parker is my woman. The Old Lady of the Serpents of Chaos."
