Chapter 1 of My Fiancé Livestreamed My Breakdown at My Mother's Funeral

I walked into the funeral hall in the black dress my mother had helped me pick out two Christmases ago. The eulogy card in my hand was soft from being folded and unfolded all night, the ink crowded with scratched-out lines.

The room smelled like white lilies and candle wax. Soft piano music played from a speaker somewhere near the back.

I looked up toward the front, where her portrait should have been.

Instead, a giant poster of Victoria smiled down at the room from a gold easel. She wore a white blouse, her head tilted, with a caption that read *Hope Starts With You.* Next to it stood a sign with a donation QR code.

For a second, I honestly thought I'd walked into the wrong room.

Brandon stood beside the easel. My fiancé. He was adjusting the white shawl on Victoria's shoulders, smoothing the fabric with a care I hadn't felt from him in months.

"Brandon," I said. "Where is my mother's picture?"

He didn't look surprised to see me. He looked annoyed.

"Victoria's fundraiser needs visibility, Erin." He lowered his voice. "Don't embarrass me."

Six years ago, when Mom was first admitted to the hospital, he'd held my hand in that bright, awful hallway. *You'll never have to face this alone,* he'd promised. *Not ever.*

I'd believed him.

"It's her funeral," I said.

"And people are here. People with money." He glanced at the guests filing in. "Victoria's foundation helps families like yours. Your mother would've wanted that."

"Don't you dare tell me what she would've wanted."

Victoria gave me a small, sad smile, like I was a child throwing a tantrum in a grocery store.

I didn't answer her. I pushed the donation sign aside. It wobbled and scraped across the floor, and a few heads turned. I didn't care.

I found Mom in the side room.

Her portrait had been shoved onto a storage shelf between folded chairs and a box of extension cords. The silver frame sat at a crooked angle, half hidden behind a stack of programs with Victoria's foundation logo printed on the back.

My throat closed up. I reached for it.

"Here, let me help." Victoria's voice came from right behind me.

Before I could say no, her hand was on the frame. I watched her fingers press flat against the back of it.

Then she pushed. Hard.

The portrait tipped off the shelf and hit the marble floor. Glass exploded across the tiles.

Victoria screamed and stumbled backward. But before she even looked at the mess, before she looked at me, her eyes went straight to the doorway.

To Brandon.

I stared at her. "I saw you push it, Victoria."

"I was only trying to help!" Her eyes filled instantly. "Why do you always hate me?"

And just like that, everything I'd been refusing to look at lined up in my head.

The night of Mom's last hospital stay, Brandon had texted me that he was stuck in an important meeting. I'd sat alone with her until four in the morning, listening to the monitor beep. The next day, Victoria posted a photo from some rooftop bar, and in the corner of the frame was a navy suit sleeve with the cufflinks I'd bought him for our anniversary.

His phone, always face down on the table now. The message threads he cleared every night. The way he jumped to defend her every single time, like she was the one who needed protecting.

It hadn't been one thing. It had been everything.

I knelt down. Mom's face stared up at me through the cracks. In the bottom corner of the photo was her handwriting, faded blue ink: *June 14, the good summer.*

I started picking out the shards. A sliver caught my finger and drew a bright line of blood. I kept going.

"Ow." Victoria's voice wobbled. She was clutching her own wrist. "Erin, why would you hit me?"

My head snapped up. "What?"

"She hit me," Victoria said louder, to the room now. "I just tried to help, and she—"

I got to my feet. "I never touched you."

I didn't even see Brandon move. His hand closed on my shoulder, and he shoved me.

I went down hard. The marble was freezing through my dress, and when I caught myself, my palms landed in the glass. Pain shot up my arms. When I lifted my hands, they were red.

Blood soaked into the hem of my black skirt.

The hall went quiet. Footsteps stopped. Somewhere, the piano kept playing.

Mrs. Delgado, who had taught alongside my mother for twenty years, started toward me with her hand out. "Oh, honey—"

"Please don't." Brandon stepped between us. He raised his voice, calm and reasonable, the voice he used in board meetings. "I'm sorry, everyone. Erin hasn't been herself. She's been extremely emotional since the loss, and today it's just too much for her."

Mrs. Delgado hesitated. Her hand hovered, then dropped.

Brandon looked down at the portrait, at my mother's face under broken glass. His expression didn't change.

"Dead people don't need any of this, Erin."

My eulogy card lay near his shoe. He'd stepped on it. There was a crease right through the line I'd rewritten six times: *She taught me that love shows up.*

Three years ago, I cashed out every share I had so his company could survive its first bad year. He kissed my fingers in our kitchen and told me he'd never let me down. Not for the rest of our lives.

"She was my mother," I said. My voice came out small.

"Your mother is dead, Erin. Stop making everything about her."

The words didn't sound real. They sounded like something a stranger would say.

I was crying now, and I hated it, but I couldn't stop. "Apologize."

He sighed.

"Apologize to her. To me. At least pick up her picture, Brandon. Please. That's all I'm asking."

He didn't bend down. He pulled his phone out of his jacket pocket.

For one stupid second, I thought he was going to call someone to help clean up.

Then he turned the screen around, and I saw the red LIVE icon in the corner.

"Hey, everyone," he said to the camera, softening his voice. "I didn't want to do this, but I think people deserve the truth. My fiancée has been going through a really unstable time mentally. And today she attacked someone who's dedicated her life to charity work."

He angled the phone toward me. Toward my bloody hands and my ruined dress.

"Look at her. This is what Victoria has been dealing with."

Behind him, Victoria pressed a tissue to her eyes. "Please just pray for me," she whispered toward the screen. "I don't want anyone to hate her. I just want to be safe."

I lunged up and covered the lens with my palm, smearing blood across the glass.

Between my fingers, I saw the viewer count. Two thousand. Three thousand. It kept climbing.

"Turn it off!" My voice cracked down the middle. "Brandon, turn it off!"

He pulled the phone back easily. Comments flooded the screen too fast to read, but some of them stuck.

*She's insane.*

*Get her to a psych ward.*

*Poor Victoria omg.*

*This is why you don't marry crazy.*

My tears hit my mother's photo and mixed with the blood. I dropped back down and reached under the frame, and this time I got my fingers around the picture and pulled it free from the glass. I held it against my chest.

That was when Victoria leaned close to Brandon's ear.

She didn't think I could hear. But the room was so quiet.

"Don't stop recording, Brandon. This is perfect."

Then she smiled. It was quick, there and gone. She didn't quite manage to hide it.

I lifted my head and looked past the glowing red light, past the phone, straight into her eyes.

She wasn't sorry. She wasn't scared.

She was getting exactly what she came for.

And so was he.

My grief, my blood, my mother's broken portrait, every tear I couldn't hold back. None of it was an accident. My falling apart in front of thousands of strangers was the whole point.
