Chapter 1 of My Ex-Husband Put My Cowboy on Payroll

I left Julian Cross after six years of marriage with one suitcase, no hotel shares, and the blue ranch proposal he once called a hobby.

I sold my Denver condo, emptied my savings, and bought a dying Colorado guest ranch because I needed one thing in my life that carried only my name.

For seven months, Beck Mercer rebuilt the horse program beside me, argued when I cut safety costs, and listened when I talked about every ridiculous opening detail.

A week before launch, we almost kissed in the tack room, and I was the one who stopped us.

Then my construction lender sold its preferred stake.

Julian walked through my gate with a suitcase and the voting rights to my biggest investment.

He upgraded security, hired Beck onto his payroll, and moved into my house as if our divorce had been a scheduling error.

That night, I found a certified copy of our divorce decree inside his investment packet, one filing line marked in red.

"Mr. Mercer, you're on my payroll now," Julian said.

"Why would I work for you?" Beck asked.

"Because her ranch needs the money."

"And because Vivian is still my wife."

The bank representative refused to meet my eyes. He slid the final page of the revised capital agreement across the reclaimed-wood table, already reaching for his briefcase.

I stared at the bold letters beneath Lead Investor.

Cross Meridian.

The investment arm behind Julian Hotel Group. My ex-husband's company.

"You sold the priority rights," I said.

"The bank needed to offload the risk, Vivian." The representative snapped one latch shut. "The buyer met our valuation. We had to take the deal."

I did not feel a rush of old heartbreak. I felt the much colder reality of losing leverage three weeks before Juniper Ridge opened.

Fourteen months ago, I had walked away from my shares in Julian Hotel Group, sold my premarital Denver apartment, and drained every account I could reach to save this property. Years before that, I had laid a blue leather-bound proposal on Julian's marble desk and explained my plan for a low-density ranch retreat built around trail access, horse rescue, and conservation.

He had pushed the binder back with a blank check on top.

Buy something easier, he had told me.

Apparently my dream had only become worth understanding once a bank put it up for sale.

"The agreement gave me right of first refusal on any ownership transfer," I said.

"Not on an assignment of senior debt," a deep voice answered from the foyer.

The heavy oak doors swung shut.

Julian Cross stood inside the lodge with a lawyer's briefcase in one hand and a hard-shell suitcase in the other.

"Section four covers equity transfers," Julian continued. "The bank assigned its senior loan and conversion rights. No equity changes hands unless Cross Meridian converts. They did not need your consent for the assignment."

The bank representative looked relieved enough to sprint. He gathered the remaining pages and left without saying goodbye.

I waited until the doors closed. "You bought out my lender without notifying me."

"The bank wanted out. I wanted in."

"That is not an explanation."

"No. It is the transaction."

He set the suitcase beside the table. "I am not here to take over your ranch. I am here to protect my investment."

"You bought the controlling debt. Those are not separate ideas."

Julian opened his briefcase and placed a thick risk file in front of me. "Pre-opening security, trail rescue response, and equestrian liability all need upgrades. As primary investor, Cross Meridian can designate funding sources and require a risk-management plan."

"I run operations."

"And I secure the assets."

"Juniper Ridge is not one of your corporate hotels. You do not get to walk in here and reorganize my week. We open in three weeks."

"Which is why your current liability coverage is a problem today, not next month."

The side door opened before I could answer.

Beck Mercer stepped into the lodge carrying a clipboard and the smell of cold air, hay, and machine grease.

His gaze moved from Julian's suitcase to Julian's face.

"Bad time?" Beck asked.

"Perfect," I said. "Apparently we have a new investor."

Julian studied Beck's worn boots and calloused hands. "Vivian has always confused passion with risk control."

My jaw tightened.

Beck did not rise to it. He handed me the clipboard. "New safety checklist. If the budget stays where it is, we cut three trail rides and close the north ridge after four. I will not run guests through there without another guide."

Julian skimmed the top page. "Cross Meridian can absorb Beck's salary through opening month. He becomes site security director. Juniper Ridge keeps the cash, and the safety plan gains a dedicated lead."

Beck crossed his arms. "I do not work for you."

"You work for the safety of the guests," Julian replied. "Unless you would rather watch this property run out of cash before ribbon cutting."

"I would rather work for somebody who respects the animals and the land."

"Respect does not pay insurance premiums."

Beck stepped forward. "And money does not make you the man in charge of my arena."

"Stop." I moved between them. "Beck knows the property."

"Then additional oversight should not threaten him," Julian said.

I glanced at the cash-flow sheet Tessa had left on the corner of the desk. Red numbers covered the final column. The west-wing contractors were due their last payment. The winter feed order had already been cut once. Pride would not cover payroll.

I looked at Beck. "If Cross Meridian pays you, I still sign off on every safety decision. You report to Juniper Ridge standards, not Julian's personal instructions."

Beck's stare stayed on mine. "Put that in writing."

"Done."

Julian gave a small nod. "The contract can reflect it."

He shifted, and his gaze dropped to the narrow space between Beck and me. Something sharpened in his expression before he buried it.

Then he nudged the hard-shell suitcase with the toe of his shoe.

"I will use the second-floor guest suite until opening day," he said. "The investor agreement permits an on-site representative during the pre-opening risk period."

I laughed once. "Absolutely not."

"Read the appendix before you refuse."

I hated that he was probably right. I hated more that he had arrived already knowing which clause would trap the argument inside a contract.

Beck picked up the risk file. "If he stays, I want the chain of command posted in the operations office by tonight. No verbal orders."

"Agreed," I said.

Julian looked at him. "You negotiate quickly for a man who says he does not work for me."

"I am negotiating with Vivian."

The answer landed between them like a thrown knife.

I took out my phone before either man could turn me into the center of a contest I had never agreed to enter.

"Tessa will assign the guest suite," I told Julian. "You do not enter my private office or my room. You do not move a single vendor, employee, horse, or dollar without the written authority the contract actually gives you."

"Understood."

I should have felt relieved by the easy answer. Instead, a cold instinct crawled along my spine.

I stepped into the hallway and called Maya, my attorney.

"Julian just bought the bank's position in Juniper Ridge," I said when she answered. "Send me a certified copy of the divorce decree. I want my legal separation from him sitting in the operations file before his corporate lawyers start reviewing anything tied to this property."

Maya went quiet for half a beat.

"I have the scanned decree," she said. "Let me pull the county service record too."

"Why?"

"Because if Cross Meridian is doing full due diligence, I want to make sure there is nothing in the clerk's file they can use to create noise."

I looked through the open doorway at Julian's suitcase beside my table.

"Check everything," I told her.
