My Coach Husband Fired Me Before the Super Bowl

The stadium speakers replayed Liam's press conference as I passed through the public entrance.

"This time, I choose to believe Dad. Not her."

His voice rolled across the concourse, followed by cheers from fans who had no idea what his MRI showed. I kept my head down and handed the usher the single ticket Victor's assistant had sent to my car. Section 610. Row Z. Seat 1. The last seat in the highest deck.

A deliberate humiliation.

My medical challenge had expired eight minutes earlier. Liam remained active, and without my credentials I could no longer order him off the field. The only protection left was the league's independent spotter system.

Naomi's voice came through my wireless earbud. "I have three camera angles and the sideline telemetry. The spotters are logged in. If he shows a neurological deficit, we can trigger an evaluation."

"Grant will fight it," I said, climbing the concrete stairs.

"He can argue after the whistle. He cannot legally ignore a mandatory medical timeout."

I reached the final row. The field looked impossibly small below me, a bright green rectangle surrounded by seventy thousand people. I sat with the black medical denial folded inside my coat and the old blue stopwatch in my palm.

The stopwatch had timed Liam's first steps after ACL surgery eight years ago. Back then he had been fifteen, furious and frightened, and I had promised him that patience would give him a future. Tonight he had called that care a cage.

The teams ran from the tunnels. Grant led Boston onto the field, one hand raised to the crowd. Liam followed in his away jersey, moving with the rigid posture I had seen in the clinic. He turned his entire torso instead of rotating his neck.

A fan beside me noticed the report in my hand. "You scouting somebody?"

"Watching one player," I said.

On the field, Liam began his warm-up throws. The first pass came out clean. On the second, his left hand opened late after the follow-through. He flexed the fingers twice before calling for another ball. The stadium cameras framed his smile and ignored the movement.

"Grip delay on the non-throwing hand," I told Naomi.

"I caught it. The spotter wants a clearer angle."

Liam took a deeper drop. His right foot landed too close to his left, narrowing his base. He corrected before the pass, but the compensation traveled up his hips and shoulders. A quarterback could hide pain from a crowd. He could not hide altered mechanics from someone who had measured his gait since he was fifteen.

The fan beside me cheered when Liam launched a deep ball. I watched him rub his thumb against the seam of his jersey afterward, testing whether he could still feel it.

"He is symptomatic before the first snap," I said. "Send the warm-up clips with my original denial."

"Already attached," Naomi replied. "The league physician has them, but without an on-field failure he will not overrule the active designation."

That was the trap Grant had built. He only needed Liam to look functional long enough for the game to begin. After that, every warning could be dismissed as ordinary contact.

"Baseline observation," I told Naomi. "Limited cervical rotation before kickoff. Log it."

"Logged."

The opening drive began. Liam completed two short passes. The announcers praised his composure. I watched his feet.

On third down, a defensive tackle broke through the line and drove a shoulder into Liam's ribs. Liam hit the turf and rolled once.

I started the stopwatch.

One second.

Two.

He pushed onto his hands and knees. His arms held, but his right leg remained extended behind him.

Four seconds.

He dragged the knee under his body and stood.

"Get up cleanly," I whispered.

He took one step toward the huddle. His right toe caught the turf. The cleat scraped a white line before he lifted it.

"Right foot drag," I said. "First quarter, eight minutes twelve seconds."

"I see it," Naomi answered. Her keyboard rattled through the connection. "Stride length down sixteen percent. Sending the medical alert."

Liam stumbled again. This time his right knee dipped. He covered it by tugging at his sock, pretending to adjust his equipment.

The head referee touched the pager at his waist.

"Alert received," Naomi said. "Spotter is requesting a stoppage."

Grant saw the official turn toward the sideline. He sprinted between the camera and Liam, lifted his laminated play sheet, and blocked the view of Liam's lower body.

"He is hiding the gait," I said.

Grant seized Liam by the shoulder pads and pulled him close. Even from the upper deck I recognized the cadence of his shouting.

"No huddle! Hurry!"

The referee hesitated. Grant waved the offense back onto the field before the medical spotter could complete the stop request.

"The alert is still live," Naomi said. "I am escalating to the league physician."

The stadium clock dropped under twenty seconds.

The backup quarterback jogged toward the huddle. Grant cut him off with one arm. Liam shook his head and pointed the rookie back to the bench.

"He is refusing the substitution," Naomi said.

"Because Grant told him staying in proves I lied."

Liam lined up behind center. He kept his head fixed forward. A healthy quarterback would scan the defense from safety to edge rusher. Liam could not turn far enough to check his blind side.

I stopped the stopwatch at eighteen seconds.

"He cannot rotate left," I told Naomi. "His blind side is open."

"The league physician is calling the field now."

The center snapped the ball.

Liam dropped back. His right foot landed late, forcing his hips out of line. He recovered and raised his arm to throw.

A linebacker came untouched from the left edge.

"Medical timeout!" Naomi shouted into the officials' channel.

Grant was already screaming for the play to continue.

Liam released the pass.

The linebacker lowered his shoulder.

Two yards.

I rose so fast my seat slammed shut behind me.

One yard.

"Turn, Liam!"

He never saw the defender.

The shoulder pad closed on the left side of his neck.

"Stop the play!" Naomi screamed.
