My Boyfriend Filmed Me for My Stepmother

The bank vault was quiet. Cold. The kind of cold that came from steel and silence and secrets kept too long.

I sat at the small table with the safe deposit box in front of me. The key had turned easily. Like it had been waiting.

Inside: a stack of journals bound in soft leather. Photographs in a manila envelope. Letters tied with string. Medical records. A police report, edges yellowed with age.

I pulled out the top journal first. Opened it to the first page.

The handwriting stopped me.

It looked like mine. Not exactly—but close enough that for a second I thought I was looking at something I'd written and forgotten. The slant of the letters. The way the 'y' curved at the bottom.

I pressed my palm flat against the page. Felt the slight texture of old ink.

Then I started reading.

*March 14th. Richard took me to the park today. We walked for hours. He told me about his daughter—the one he wants to have someday. He said he hopes she has my eyes.*

I turned the page.

*April 2nd. I'm pregnant. I haven't told him yet. I'm scared and happy and I don't know which feeling is bigger.*

Another page.

*June 10th. Richard proposed. I said yes. I can't believe this is my life.*

I kept reading. Months of entries. A life unfolding in careful handwriting. Doctor's appointments. Baby names. Wedding plans. And then—

*September 18th. Sienna's been coming around more. She says she wants to help with the wedding. Something about her makes me uneasy, but Richard says I'm imagining things.*

*October 3rd. I fell today. Down the stairs at Richard's office building. Sienna was there. She said I tripped. But I don't remember tripping.*

*October 20th. Richard's worried about me. Says I seem paranoid. Maybe I am. Maybe pregnancy is making me see things that aren't there.*

The last entry was dated November 1st.

*I think something's wrong. I can't explain it. Just a feeling. If anything happens to me—if something happens—please tell my daughter I loved her. Tell her I tried.*

I closed the journal. Set it down carefully.

Then I opened the envelope of photographs.

The woman looking back at me had my face. Younger. Softer. But unmistakably mine. Same eyes. Same angle to the jaw. Same small scar above the left eyebrow I'd always been told came from a childhood fall.

In one photo she was laughing at something off-camera, her head tilted. I knew that angle. I'd seen it in mirrors my whole life.

In another, she stood beside my father. His arm around her waist. Both of them smiling like they'd just been told the best news in the world.

I set the photos down. Picked up the police report.

*Victim: Audrey Wright, 29. Cause of death: blunt force trauma consistent with vehicular accident. Vehicle fled the scene. Investigation closed at the request of family representative. No further action recommended.*

At the bottom, in smaller print: *Family representative: Legal proxy retained by S. Morrison.*

I read it twice. Three times.

Then I pulled out my phone and photographed everything. Every page of the journal. Every photograph. Every document. The medical records that confirmed what I already knew—Audrey Wright was my biological mother. The death certificate. The police report.

When I was done, I put everything back exactly as I'd found it. Closed the box. Locked it.

I sat there for twenty minutes with my hands flat on the table.

The vault guard knocked eventually. Asked if I was all right.

I stood. Smoothed my coat. "I'm fine."

Outside, it was raining. I stood under the awning and watched water run down the sidewalk.

Your mother's name was Audrey.

I called Maisie.

"Where are you?" she asked.

"Can I come over?"

"I'm already putting coffee on."

---

Maisie's apartment was warm. She took my coat without asking questions. Handed me a mug. Sat beside me on the couch.

I told her everything.

When I finished, she was quiet for a long moment.

"Twenty minutes," she said finally.

"What?"

"You get twenty minutes. Then we work."

I looked at her.

"You've been holding this together for weeks," she said. "You're allowed to fall apart. But only for twenty minutes. Because after that, we have a gala to plan."

Something in my chest cracked open.

I set down the coffee. Put my face in my hands.

Maisie pulled me against her shoulder and didn't say anything.

I cried for exactly nineteen minutes.

Then I sat up. Wiped my face. Took the laptop she handed me.

"We need to trace that legal proxy," I said. "Find out how Sienna got the investigation closed."

"Already started," Maisie said. She pulled up archived records. Court filings. Financial transactions from thirty years ago. "She used a shell account. But it's traceable. Give me forty-eight hours."

I nodded. Opened my own files. Started building the timeline.

We worked until three in the morning.

---

I came home to find Kash on the couch. He looked up when I walked in, setting something aside quickly.

"Hey. Long day?"

"Something like that."

He stood. Crossed to me. Pulled me into his arms. "You okay?"

"Tired."

He kissed my forehead. "Go to bed. I'll be there in a minute."

I went to the bedroom. Changed. Slipped under the covers.

A few minutes later, Kash came in. He thought I was asleep.

I watched through half-closed eyes as he picked up something from his nightstand. Yarn. Knitting needles.

He sat on the edge of the bed and worked quietly. The needles clicked softly in the dark.

I could see the color in the dim light. Deep burgundy. My favorite.

The shade I'd mentioned once, months ago, when we'd passed a boutique window and I'd said I loved that color for fall.

He was making me a scarf.

For my birthday. Two weeks away.

I watched his hands move. Careful. Precise. Entirely focused.

And I couldn't tell—even now—if this was part of the performance or if somewhere in the wreckage of what he'd done, this small thing was real.

I closed my eyes.

Fourteen days until the gala.

I could hold on for fourteen more days.
