Chapter 1 of My Boyfriend Chose His Pregnant Fake Sister Over Me

I spent all Sunday afternoon making Whitley's favorite meal. Braised short ribs. The kind that takes hours. The apartment was small, just a studio with a kitchenette, but I'd learned to make it work. I browned the meat in my one good pot, added wine I couldn't really afford, and let it simmer while I cleaned up around it.

Whitley had texted me that morning. *Can you help me pick an outfit for dinner this week? You always know what looks good.*

I smiled at my phone. Of course I would help her. She was Barrett's little sister. She was twenty-three, still figuring things out, and she'd told me once that I was like the big sister she never had. That made something warm bloom in my chest. I'd given up my own family to be with Barrett. It felt good to have someone treat me like family in return.

I packed the short ribs into a container, grabbed the bag of clothes I'd pulled from my tiny closet—a few dresses I thought might work for her—and headed to Barrett's apartment. He'd given me a key two years ago. "Use it whenever," he'd said. "I like knowing you can just come home."

Home.

I held that word carefully as I rode the elevator up to his floor. Eight years. We'd been together since college. I was a sophomore when we met. He was a senior, charming and easy to talk to, and he never made me feel like I had to be anything other than myself. I'd loved him so completely that I'd walked away from everything to prove it.

My father didn't understand. General Richard Foster didn't understand a lot of things outside his world of strategy and command. But he'd let me go. He always said I had to make my own choices. So I made mine. I left the estate, the name, the security detail that used to follow me to college classes. I became just Vanessa. No last name that opened doors. No father whose rank made people straighten their spines.

Just me. Just love.

Barrett's apartment door was unlocked. I pushed it open and called out softly. "Barrett? I brought dinner."

No answer.

I stepped inside. His shoes were by the door. His jacket on the chair. He was home. I set the container on the kitchen counter and walked toward the living room.

That's when I saw them.

Barrett was on the couch. Whitley was curled into his side, her head on his shoulder. His hand rested on her stomach. Her very round, very pregnant stomach. Neither of them had heard me come in. They looked comfortable. They looked like they'd sat that way a thousand times before.

On the coffee table in front of them: an ultrasound photo. Black and white, grainy, with a tiny curved shape in the center. Next to it, a small velvet box, open. A ring inside.

I stopped breathing.

Barrett looked up. His face went white. "Vanessa—"

Whitley sat up fast, her hand flying to her belly. Her eyes went wide, but there was something else in them. Something that wasn't surprise.

"What is this?" My voice came out steady. I was proud of that. "Barrett. What is this?"

He stood up, hands raised like I was something he needed to calm down. "It's—it's complicated."

"Complicated." I repeated the word slowly. I looked at Whitley. At the stomach I'd somehow never noticed. At the ring. "She's your sister."

"She's not," Whitley said quietly. She didn't look away. "I never was."

The floor tilted. I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger. Hard. The pain helped.

"How long?" I asked.

Barrett ran a hand through his hair. "Vanessa, I was going to tell you. I just—there was never a right time, and I didn't want to hurt you—"

"How long, Barrett."

"Since before college," Whitley said. Her voice was calm. Too calm. "We've been engaged since we were nineteen. Our families arranged it."

Eight years. I'd been with him for eight years. I'd given up everything. My name. My father. My entire life. And the whole time—

"You don't understand," Barrett said quickly. He stepped toward me. "It wasn't supposed to be like this. I care about you, Vanessa. I do. But Whitley and I—we have history. We have families that expect—"

"Expect what?" I couldn't feel my hands. "Expect you to lie to me for eight years?"

Whitley suddenly gasped. She doubled over, clutching her stomach. "Barrett—"

He moved so fast I didn't see it coming. His hands hit my shoulders. I stumbled backward and fell. My hip cracked against the edge of the coffee table. Pain shot up my side.

Barrett didn't look back. He dropped to his knees next to Whitley, his hands on her face. "Are you okay? Is it the baby?"

"I'm fine," she whispered. But her eyes flicked to me. Just for a second. And I saw it. The calculation. The performance.

Barrett turned to me, still on the floor. His face was twisted with something I'd never seen before. Anger. "You need to leave. You're stressing her out. If something happens to this baby—"

I didn't wait to hear the rest. I stood up. My hip throbbed. I walked to the door, picked up my bag, and left the container of short ribs on the counter.

I didn't cry on the walk home. I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger until a white crescent formed in the skin. The pain was clean. Simple. I understood it.

Eight years.

I'd cooked dinner for the woman who was engaged to my boyfriend. I'd helped her pick out clothes. I'd called her my sister.

The night air was cold. I pulled my jacket tighter and kept walking.
