Chapter 1 of My Best Friend Wore My Wedding Dress to Marry Him

The ultrasound photo is still warm from the printer.

I hold it with both hands as I push through the clinic's glass door onto the sidewalk. Eight weeks. Strong heartbeat. Dr. Reyes had pointed to a tiny flicker on the screen—this little pulse, she'd said, like it was the most ordinary miracle in the world. To me it was everything.

Manhattan is loud and bright around me. A food cart steams on the corner. A cab leans on its horn. I don't hear any of it. I press my thumb against the inside of my wrist the way I always do when something is too big to hold—just checking. Still here. Still me.

Tonight. I'll tell Dustin tonight.

We've been engaged for seven years. Seven years of Sunday mornings and inside jokes and the kind of comfortable love that stops feeling like luck and starts feeling like gravity. He'll be at Marcello's by seven. I know his schedule the way I know my own breathing. I'll slide into the booth across from him, order the pasta I always order, and then I'll put the photo on the table between us.

I don't rehearse what I'll say. There's nothing to rehearse. Some moments don't need a script.

I flag a cab and give the address. The driver pulls into traffic. I look down at the photo in my lap—that tiny gray smudge, that impossible flicker—and I smile so wide it almost hurts.

Three blocks from the restaurant, I hear the engine.

Not the ordinary city-noise of traffic. Something different. Something accelerating when it should be stopping. I turn my head toward the sound and then the world tilts sideways and there is a crack of impact so total it erases everything—the cab, the street, the warm photo in my hands—and I am in the air, and then I am not.

The pavement comes up fast.

I land hard on my left side. The breath leaves my body in one brutal instant. For a moment I can't move, can't think, can't do anything except stare at the gutter six inches from my face. And there it is—the ultrasound photo, skidding across wet asphalt, spinning to a stop against the curb.

I reach for it.

That's the last thing I remember.

---

The ceiling is fluorescent white.

That's the first thing I see when I come back. White ceiling, humming lights, the sharp chemical smell of a hospital. There's an IV in my arm. My left side is a wall of pain.

A doctor is speaking. Young, careful voice. Practiced. The kind of voice that has delivered this particular sentence before.

'—significant internal trauma. We did everything we could, but we were unable to save the pregnancy.'

The words arrive in the wrong order. I hear them and then I understand them and then the grief comes—not loud, not screaming, just a weight that drops through my chest and keeps falling.

I lie still. I stare at the ceiling. I press one hand flat against my sternum, over the place where the weight has settled, and I breathe.

The doctor says something else. I don't track it. A nurse adjusts something on the IV stand. Somewhere down the hall, a monitor beeps in a steady, indifferent rhythm.

I am still here. I tell myself that. Still here.

I don't know how long I lie there before I hear his voice.

Dustin.

Not at my door. Not in my room. Through the wall—through the half-open door of the room next to mine—his voice coming through louder and more fractured than I have ever heard it in seven years.

'Please.' A pause. 'Please, you have to save the baby. Whatever it takes. Whatever it costs. Save the baby.'

I sit up. My left side screams. I don't stop.

I get to the doorway and I hold the frame and I look.

Dustin is standing at a hospital bed. Both his hands are wrapped around someone else's hands. His back is half-turned to me, his shoulders shaking, his voice breaking on every word as he begs the doctor across the bed.

The someone else is Kendall.

Kendall Carroll. My best friend since college. The woman who was maid of honor at our engagement party. The woman who has my spare key, who knows my coffee order, who once held me on a bathroom floor when I got bad news about a case and told me I was the strongest person she knew.

She's in the bed. IV in her arm. Eyes closed. Dark hair spread against the pillow.

Dustin's hands are shaking around hers.

I stand in the doorway for four seconds. I count them. One. Two. Three. Four.

Then I turn around and walk back to my bed.

---

The nurse comes in with a clipboard. Consent forms for the surgical procedure. She sets them on the tray beside me and tells me gently that she'll give me a few minutes for my family to arrive.

'They're on their way,' she says. A kindness. An assumption.

I pick up the pen.

I read every line. All of it—the risks, the procedure, the language that turns the worst moment of my life into a series of checkboxes. My handwriting does not waver. I sign each page and fold the forms and hand them back.

The nurse looks at the empty doorway behind me. 'Is there someone I should call?'

I look at her. My voice comes out steady and quiet and entirely my own.

'No,' I say. 'Thank you.'

She nods and leaves.

I lie back down. I press my thumb against my wrist.

Still here.
