My Alpha Took His Mistress to Our Mating Bed

Three days. That was how long Rowan let me sit in our chambers before he found his courage in the bottom of a brandy decanter and decided to put me on trial.

The summons came at dawn. A folded card slipped under my door by an Omega too frightened to knock. *Formal pack assembly. Great Hall. Nine sharp. Matter: Luna misconduct and breach of pack protocol.*

I read it twice. Then I poured myself a cup of tea and let it cool on the windowsill while I dressed.

I did not wear gray today. I wore white. The color a Luna wears at her mating ceremony, and the color my people wear to witness an execution. Rowan would not know the second meaning. None of them would.

Barnaby walked at my left hip as I crossed the courtyard. His silver fur was brushed glass-smooth. I had braided a thin strip of moonstone into his collar that morning, and it caught the light with every step. He looked, I thought, exactly like what he was—a king's gift, walking a princess to her coronation.

The hall was already full when I entered.

They had set it up like a courtroom. The long banquet tables were gone. In their place, rows of benches packed shoulder to shoulder with every warrior, every Delta, every Omega the pack possessed. Rowan sat above them all on the Alpha dais, in the carved oak chair I had commissioned for his thirtieth birthday. He had even worn the ceremonial sash.

And beside him—half a step lower, but unmistakably *beside*—sat Jessie. Clean uniform. Hair pulled back tight. A fresh patch behind each ear, the corners pressed down so flat you could almost forget they existed. She held her chin at a careful angle. Rehearsed.

I stopped on the floor below the dais. I did not bow. I did not look up. I folded my hands at my waist and waited.

Rowan cleared his throat. "Olivia Hayes-Burke. You stand before this pack accused of public humiliation of a ranking warrior, deliberate breach of banquet protocol, and conduct unbecoming of a Luna." His voice rolled out heavy and practiced. He had been working on it. "Three nights ago, you delivered, in full view of four allied delegations, a calculated insult against a member of this pack who has shed blood in our defense. You will answer for it."

A murmur rippled through the benches. Quieter than he wanted.

He nodded to Jessie. "Speak."

Jessie rose. She had the dais now, and she knew how to use it. Her voice came out exactly the way she'd shaped it for ten years—low, clipped, soldier-flat.

"Brothers. Sisters." A pause. A small, modest dip of the head. "I will not insult you by pretending you did not see what was in that box. Yes. I am female. I have been female since the day my mother whelped me, and I have hidden it from this pack for thirteen years."

A gasp from the back. She let it land.

"My family does not permit female warriors. My choice was to be hidden, or to be nothing. I chose to be useful to this pack instead. I led the Iron Creek defense. I held the eastern line at the Blackwood incursion. I took a silver bolt through the thigh at Hollow Ridge so a Delta pup could carry the message home." Her voice steadied, warmed, found its rhythm. "My deception was tactical. It served the pack. And our Luna—" the smallest curl of the lip, gone before anyone could be sure they saw it, "—chose to expose me in front of our allies for reasons that, with respect, had nothing to do with pack security."

She sat down. The benches stirred. She had spoken well. She had spoken like a leader.

I let the silence breathe for a count of four.

Then I lifted my eyes—not to Rowan, to Jessie—and I asked, in the softest voice I owned, the voice I used on frightened Omegas, "Jessie. Would you do me the kindness of naming the three border skirmishes from this past year in which you personally led the defense?"

Her mouth opened. Closed. Opened.

"Iron Creek," she said. "Blackwood. Hollow Ridge."

"Mm." I tilted my head. "Hollow Ridge was March. You were in the infirmary that week with a fractured wrist from the sparring yard. Gamma Petros led that defense. He took the silver bolt you just described."

The room went very still.

"Blackwood was September. The eastern line was held by the second patrol under Delta Marsh while you and Rowan were in Greenfell negotiating timber rights. The official record was amended four days later. I have the original draft in my study."

Jessie's hand twitched toward her ear. Stopped.

"Iron Creek," I continued, "was real. You did lead it. You lost two scouts because you ordered them up the ridge against Gamma Petros's standing recommendation, and you struck the Omega who brought you the casualty report. Her name was Lena. She still flinches when you pass her in the hall."

I had not raised my voice once. I did not need to. Lycan blood carries.

Rowan stood. The chair scraped.

"Enough." His Alpha Tone, full force, every ounce of him behind it. The benches cringed as one body. "Olivia Hayes-Burke. By the authority of the Alpha of the Moonveil Pack, I strip you of the title of Luna. I exile you to rogue territory, effective at sundown, for the crime of disrupting pack order and slandering a warrior of this house."

He waited. I knew what he was waiting for. He wanted the tears. He wanted the buckled knees, the gasped *please*, the small broken hand reaching up toward his dais.

I looked up at my husband. At the sash, at the carved oak chair, at the silver ring on his finger.

And I laughed.

It came out before I could measure it—soft, genuine, the small surprised laugh of a woman who has just been told something mildly absurd at a dinner party. It was not loud. It did not need to be. It rolled across the silent hall like a dropped coin spinning on marble, and every wolf in the room went rigid as if a blade had passed an inch from their throats.

Rowan's face emptied of color.

I smiled up at him, almost kindly, and let the laugh fade on my lips.
