Chapter 1 of My Alpha Replaced Me with His Luna

Seven years.

That's how long it takes for a pack house to become a stranger's home.

I stood at the edge of the tree line and looked at the lights of Silvercrest through the falling snow. Warm gold, every window. Music drifting out across the frozen ground, faint but real. The Winter Solstice Banquet — I had counted the days to it like a soldier counts ammunition. One more month. One more week. One more night.

My thumb found the mark on my neck before I even realized I was doing it. The skin there was faded and slightly raised, the way old scar tissue gets when it's been pressed too many times. I pulled my hand down and made myself keep walking.

The cold didn't bother me anymore. That had stopped somewhere around year three. My boots knew the frozen ground, my lungs knew the thin air, and my body had learned to carry cracked ribs the way other wolves carry bruises — quietly, without complaint. I'd taken a hit from a rogue two weeks ago. Three ribs, maybe four. I hadn't stopped to count.

I had my patrol journal tucked inside my coat. Worn leather, the spine cracked, every page dense with kill tallies and weather patterns and route notes. Seven years of surviving written in my own handwriting. I don't know why I brought it. Force of habit, maybe. Or maybe some part of me wanted proof. That I had been there. That it had been real.

The pack house gates came into view.

Two warriors stood post. I didn't recognize either of them — young, well-fed, the easy posture of wolves who had never spent a winter at a border outpost. They looked at me the way you look at something that wandered in from the wrong direction.

"Stop there." The taller one stepped forward. "State your name and business."

"Olivia." I kept my voice flat. "Olivia — I'm Charles's mate. I've been stationed at Frostfang. I'm here for the banquet."

The silence that followed was a specific kind of silence. Not confusion. Something worse.

The shorter one glanced at his partner. Then he smiled. It was the kind of smile that knows something you don't, and enjoys knowing it.

"Charles's mate," he repeated.

"That's what I said."

"Alpha Charles," the taller one said, drawing the title out slowly, "has had a Luna for three years. Faye Woods." He paused to let that land. "They have a pup. The mating ceremony was — what, Garrett, two summers ago?"

"Three," the shorter one said. "Big celebration. Whole pack was there." He looked me over, taking in the frost-burned coat, the worn boots, the general appearance of someone who had walked a long way in bad weather. "Whole pack except you, I guess."

They both laughed.

I didn't move. I didn't speak. I stood in the snow and let the words go through me the way cold goes through a coat that isn't thick enough — all at once, everywhere.

Faye Woods. Three years. A pup.

My thumb pressed the mark on my neck again. I caught myself and stopped.

"Open the gate," I said.

"Can't do that." The taller one crossed his arms. "You're not on the guest list. You're not pack-registered. Far as the records go, you're—"

"I heard you."

I turned and walked back toward the tree line. I heard one of them say something behind me, another short laugh. I didn't look back.

I gave it four minutes. Long enough for them to relax, turn back to each other, go back to whatever conversation I'd interrupted. Then I moved left along the perimeter fence, through the dark, until I found the maintenance passage behind the east generator shed. I'd memorized it before I ever left for Frostfang. Old habit. Know your exits. Know your entries. Know the shape of a place before you need to move through it fast.

The passage was still there. Unlocked. Of course it was. No one had thought about it in seven years.

I slipped inside.

The pack house was warm in a way that felt almost aggressive after the cold outside. Heat, food smells, the low vibration of music and voices. My ribs ached with each breath. I moved through the service corridor with my back to the wall, following the sound, until I reached the entrance of the banquet hall.

I stopped in the doorway.

The hall was full. Every ranked wolf in Silvercrest, dressed and celebrating, glasses raised, faces bright. Candles everywhere. The long head table at the far end under a chandelier that threw gold light across everything.

Charles sat at the center of it.

He looked exactly the way I remembered him. Strong jaw, broad shoulders, the easy authority of a man who has never once doubted his right to take up space. He was laughing at something, his head tilted back, and for one terrible second I felt the mate bond stir in my chest like an ember that hadn't quite gone out.

Then I saw her.

Faye Woods sat beside him. Beautiful, polished, her dark hair swept up and a gown that caught the candlelight. The mate mark on her neck was fresh and vivid — not faded, not worn, not pressed down by seven years of cold and silence. It blazed. It was meant to be seen.

And on Charles's knee, laughing at something only a three-year-old finds funny, was their pup.

The warmth. The music. The life I had been promised.

All of it real. All of it built without me.

The mark on my neck burned like it hadn't in years.

I walked through the doors.

The first few wolves near the entrance noticed me and went quiet. Then the quiet spread, the way it does when something is wrong and everyone can feel it before they know what it is. The music stuttered and stopped. Heads turned.

I walked to the center of the hall and I looked at Charles.

"Charles."

My voice came out steady. I was grateful for that.

Every wolf in the room was watching. I was aware of how I looked — border coat, frost-burned skin, the particular stillness of someone who has been in too many fights to waste energy on posture. I was aware of Faye's eyes moving over me with the calm assessment of a woman who has already decided what she's looking at.

I didn't look at her. I looked at him.

"Mate," I said.

The word dropped into the silence of the hall like a stone into still water.

Charles looked at me.

And I watched his face — watched it carefully, the way you watch a rogue in the tree line, looking for the tell that comes before the move. There was no guilt there. No shock. No grief.

Just calculation. Cold and unhurried, the look of a man whose contingency plan has just been activated.

He had known I might come back.

He had already decided what to do when I did.
