Chapter 1 of My Alpha Rejected Me for a Fake Luna

The bond broke at 8:41 on a Saturday night, three seconds after Cassian stepped onto the dais and didn't look at me.

I knew the exact time because I'd been watching the clock above the hall doors for an hour, counting down to the moment he would finally say my name in front of everyone. Three hundred wolves stood packed under the torchlight in ceremonial robes. The white lilies along the aisle were ones I'd cut and arranged myself that morning, before dawn, because nobody else would think to do it.

My thumb moved in slow circles against my palm. Warding sigils. A habit from three years of holding a border together in the dark.

Cassian raised his hand. The hall went quiet.

"I, Cassian Black, Alpha of Shadowvale, reject you, Kaia Stone, as my mate."

The words landed in binding cadence, old and formal, the kind that can't be taken back.

Something white-hot drove through my sternum. The phantom mark on my neck—the one he'd never actually given me, just the promise of it, the warm place that had hummed for three years—went cold first. Then empty. Like a door closing in a room nobody lived in anymore.

My knee hit the wood of the dais. Hard.

I heard someone gasp. I heard nothing else, because inside my skull something enormous slammed against the walls of me. My wolf. Silent for three years, folded up small in the dark where I'd kept her. She threw herself forward with a fury that rattled my back teeth.

*Get up,* she snarled. *Get UP.*

And then Cassian turned, and I heard the wet sound of teeth breaking skin.

I lifted my head. He had Ashlynn Cox by the shoulders—six months in this pack, ceremonial furs already draped across her, positioned at his right like she'd been rehearsing it. His mouth was at her throat. When he pulled back, blood beaded bright on her collarbone and she was smiling. Smiling at me.

Cassian wiped his lip with the back of his thumb and faced the hall.

"Your Luna," he said.

No one cheered. Three hundred wolves stood there breathing.

Someone near the back—an older Delta, one of the ones I'd stitched a border seam for during last winter's storm—said, low, "Alpha. The wards."

Cassian shrugged. Actually shrugged, one shoulder, like a man brushing off a fly.

"Her ward-work?" His voice carried, easy and bored. "Basic Omega maintenance. Anyone could perform it."

I want to say the pain stopped then. It didn't. It kept going, a slow tear down the center of my chest, the bond fraying thread by thread. But underneath it, something else was rising, and it was cold.

I got my foot under me. Then the other one.

I stood up.

I did not look at Cassian. I've thought about that a lot since—how he must have expected me to look at him. To beg, or scream, or reach. I looked past him instead, out at the three hundred faces I had kept alive.

Marcus Cole was at the front, the Beta, jaw locked so tight the muscle jumped. He was the only one who didn't look away when my eyes found him.

"You should all hear this," I said.

My voice came out soft. It always does. Cassian used to say I sounded like a nurse reading test results.

"Every ward on this territory was woven with my blood in the thread. That means it answers to my mouth."

Ashlynn laughed, high and pretty. "Oh, sweetheart—"

I spoke the unraveling command.

It's one phrase. Old tongue, seven syllables, the kind of word that scrapes the throat coming out. I laid it into the first ward when I was nineteen and terrified, and into every single one after, because my aunt told me before she died: *never build a thing you can't take back.*

The air pressure in the hall dropped.

Every torch flame bent sideways at once, like the room had inhaled. A low sound moved through the floor, more felt than heard—a hum I'd carried in my bones so long I'd stopped noticing it, going quiet. Wolves grabbed at their ears. Somewhere out past the east treeline, twelve miles of woven light went dark, one thread at a time, north gate to river bend to the ridge where I'd knelt in the snow last February until my fingers split.

Gone. All of it.

Cassian's head snapped around. For the first time all night, he looked at me.

"Kaia."

I reached inside myself and found the mind-links—every one, three hundred small tethers of pack noise I'd lived inside since I was nineteen—and I cut them. All at once. The silence that came after was the cleanest thing I'd ever felt.

Then I stepped off the dais and walked up the aisle, between my own lilies, and nobody stopped me.

I was at the tree line when the first howl came.

It rose from the north, where the gate wards had been, long and cracked and hungry. Not one of ours. Rogues had not crossed Shadowvale's border in three years, and they had never once made it far enough in to be heard from the ceremony grounds.

A second howl answered. Then a third, closer.

Behind me the hall erupted—chairs going over, someone shouting for warriors, Ashlynn's voice climbing into a shriek. I kept walking.

I crossed the boundary stone at midnight and the pain caught up with me all at once, out in the unclaimed dark where there was no one to see. My knees went. My spine arched. Bone cracked and shifted under my skin in searing waves, three years of holding her down finally giving out, and I heard myself make a sound I'd never made before.

When it ended I was standing on four legs in wet grass, and the fur along my shoulders was silver.

And the air was full of a scent I had never smelled in my life—cold flowers, burning stars—pouring off my own skin like it had been waiting twenty years to get out.
