Chapter 1 of My Alpha Publicly Rejected Me for His Mistress

I held the pregnancy test in my hand like it was made of glass. The two pink lines were sharp and clear under the fluorescent lights of the pack healer's office. Maren Ellis, the senior healer, had smiled at me with something close to warmth when she confirmed what I already knew.

"Congratulations, Lyra," she'd said quietly. "You're about six weeks along."

Six weeks. I tried to calculate backward, tried to remember the exact night, but everything blurred together in my mind. The past five years had been a continuous stretch of days that bled into one another, marked only by Ethan's moods and the rhythm of pack obligations. But this — this was different. This was a line drawn in the sand. A before and an after.

I drove home with trembling hands, the test wrapped in tissue paper and tucked into my bag. The secret felt enormous, pressing against my ribs, demanding to be spoken aloud. Tonight was our fifth mating anniversary. I had planned a dinner. Nothing elaborate — Ethan didn't like fuss — just the two of us, candles on the table, his favorite roasted chicken with rosemary. I would tell him then. I would watch his face light up. I would finally see him look at me the way he used to, back when I was the one who pulled him out of the dark.

The pack house was quiet when I arrived. I parked in the back and took the long way through the garden, past the hedges I had planted three years ago when I thought we would fill this place with children. The afternoon sun was warm on my shoulders. I let myself imagine it: Ethan's hand on my stomach, his wolf reaching out to sense the tiny life growing inside me, his voice soft and grateful.

I pushed open the side door and climbed the stairs to the third floor, where the empty rooms waited. One of them — the corner room with the wide window facing east — I had been preparing in secret for months. I unlocked the door and stepped inside.

The walls were pale yellow, the color of early morning light. Along the base of the wall, I had painted tiny silver paw prints in a careful trail that led from the door to the window, as if a wolf pup had walked across the room and looked out at the world. There were folded blankets on the shelf, soft and cream-colored. A small wooden mobile hung above where a crib would eventually go, carved moons and stars turning slowly in the draft.

I stood in the center of the room and pressed my hand to my stomach. "You're going to love it here," I whispered. My wolf, Seren, stirred faintly in the back of my mind — a flicker of warmth, barely more than a sigh. She had been so quiet lately. I missed her voice.

I locked the door behind me and went downstairs to start dinner. The kitchen smelled like rosemary and butter. I set the table with care, adjusting the candles twice, folding the napkins the way Ethan's mother had taught me. Everything had to be right. This was the night that would change everything.

While the chicken roasted, I wiped down the counters and checked the time. Ethan's phone was lying face-up on the island, the screen dark. I picked it up to glance at the clock — 6:47 PM. He would be home soon.

The screen lit up under my thumb.

A notification banner slid down from the top. A message. From Elina Gray.

*She'll never know. Come to me tonight.*

I stared at the words. They didn't make sense at first. I read them again. And again. My hands went numb.

I unlocked the phone. I knew his passcode — he had given it to me years ago, back when we didn't keep secrets. The messages loaded slowly, a long thread that stretched back months. I scrolled up. And up. And up.

*I miss the way you taste.*

*She doesn't understand you like I do.*

*Tonight. The cabin. Don't make me wait.*

There were photos. I didn't open them. I didn't need to. I set the phone down exactly where I had found it, screen-side up, the message still glowing.

I stood in the kitchen and listened to my own breathing. The candles flickered. The chicken timer went off, a sharp beep that cut through the silence. I turned off the oven. I did not cry. I could not seem to move my face into any expression at all.

Seren was silent. Completely silent. I reached for her and found nothing.

I heard Ethan's car pull into the driveway. His footsteps on the gravel. The front door opening. He called my name, his voice easy and relaxed, the voice of a man who had no idea his world was about to crack open.

I picked up his phone and walked into the hallway.

He was hanging his jacket on the hook by the door, his back to me. When he turned and saw me standing there with his phone in my hand, his expression shifted — just for a second, a flicker of something that might have been guilt or might have been annoyance. Then it smoothed over into neutral.

"Lyra," he said. "What's wrong?"

I held the phone out to him. "Tell me about Elina."

His jaw tightened. He didn't take the phone. "You went through my messages?"

"Tell me," I said again. My voice was very calm. I didn't recognize it.

He exhaled through his nose, a sharp, irritated sound. "You're being paranoid."

"Paranoid," I repeated. The word tasted strange in my mouth.

"Elina and I are old friends," he said. "That's all. You're reading too much into—"

"She says you're coming to her tonight," I interrupted. "On our anniversary."

His expression hardened. "Don't do this, Lyra. Don't make this into something it's not."

"Then what is it?"

He stepped closer, and I saw it then — the look I had been pretending not to see for months. Resentment. Contempt. "Elina understands me," he said quietly. "She understands what it's like to be strong. To lead. You—" He gestured at me, vague and dismissive. "You've always been... soft. Grateful. Like I owe you something."

I felt the words land like blows, but my body didn't react. I just stood there, holding his phone, watching him rewrite five years of my life.

"I saved you," I said. My voice was still calm. Still strange.

"And I marked you," he shot back. "I gave you a place in this pack. A title. I kept my end of the bargain."

Bargain.

I set his phone on the hall table. I turned and walked back into the kitchen. The candles were still burning. The table was still set. I blew out the flames one by one, and the smoke curled up toward the ceiling in thin, gray lines.

I did not tell him I was pregnant.

I decided, silently and completely, that I would request a formal bond severance. I would raise my pup alone. And I would never, ever let him see me break.
