My Alpha Planned to Reject Me for His Pregnant Mistress

I waited until morning to tell him.

Grant was in his office, surrounded by patrol reports he didn't understand and alliance correspondence he'd never written. He looked up when I knocked, and I saw the relief flash across his face before he could hide it. He wanted me gone. He just needed me to make it easy.

I kept my voice soft. The tone he'd trained into me over seven years.

"I need to take Phoebe to Moonveil Pack," I said through the mind-link, letting the words carry that familiar self-effacing quality. "A healing retreat. Just for a few weeks. I need space to... process everything."

His shoulders relaxed. "That's probably best."

"I think so too," I whispered aloud, my eyes lowered. Submissive. Broken. Exactly what he expected.

He waved his hand, already turning back to the reports. "Take whatever time you need. The pack will manage."

He didn't ask about Phoebe. Didn't ask when we'd return. Didn't ask anything at all.

I left his office with my fingertips pressed together behind my back.

---

We crossed into Moonveil territory three hours later. Phoebe sat in the backseat with Buster's head in her lap, humming something soft and tuneless. The moment the car passed the boundary marker, I felt it—the mate bond stretching thin, then thinner, until I could barely feel Grant's presence at all.

I sealed the mind-link completely.

The silence in my head was so sudden, so absolute, I almost pulled over. For seven years, Grant's presence had been a constant hum in the back of my mind—his moods, his scent, his thoughts bleeding into mine whether I wanted them or not. Now there was nothing. Just clean, empty quiet.

My wolf stirred. Not with pain. With relief.

---

My grandmother was waiting on the porch when we arrived.

She looked exactly as I remembered—silver hair braided down her back, eyes the same grey as mine and Phoebe's, posture straight as a blade. She watched me climb out of the car, her gaze sweeping over my face, my diminished aura, the exhaustion I'd been carrying so long I'd forgotten it had weight.

Phoebe ran to her immediately, Buster bounding behind. "Great-grandma!"

My grandmother knelt, her movements still graceful despite her age, and pulled Phoebe into a hug. But her eyes stayed on me.

When Phoebe finally released her and ran inside with the puppy, my grandmother stood. She didn't smile. Didn't soften.

"You let him put out your light," she said plainly. "And called it love."

The words hit like a slap. I opened my mouth to respond—to defend, to explain—but nothing came out.

She stepped closer, her hand lifting to my face. Her fingers were cool against my cheek. "You're home now. We'll fix it."

Something in my chest cracked.

---

That night, I slept in a room that smelled of moonflower and old cedar. The founding bloodline's scent. My grandmother had kept it exactly as it had been when I was young—before Grant, before the mate bond, before I learned to make myself small.

I lay in the narrow bed, the window cracked open to let in the night air, and felt my wolf stretch inside me for the first time in years. Not struggling. Not straining. Just... breathing.

I dreamed of running.

Not from something. Just running. Through forests that smelled like home. My paws hitting earth that remembered my bloodline. My wolf's voice rising in a howl that didn't need to be silent.

When I woke, the sun was already high. My grandmother stood in the doorway with tea.

"Your wolf is waking up," she said, setting the cup on the bedside table. "It will hurt before it helps."

"I know."

She sat on the edge of the bed, her gaze steady. "The Beta sent word. Three messages since dawn. Your mate is struggling."

I wrapped my hands around the warm cup. "Good."

Her mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "The banquet is in two weeks. Are you ready?"

I thought of Lilia's bright, careless voice. Grant's metallic-edged lies through the bond. Phoebe asking why the lady smelled like Daddy.

"Yes," I said quietly. "I'm ready."

---

The Beta's messages came in encrypted bursts over the next few days, each one more detailed than the last.

*Allied packs are asking for you directly. Grant doesn't know how to respond.*

*Patrol schedules collapsed. He tried to reassign warriors without checking territory agreements. Two border disputes in three days.*

*The Crescent Ridge trade deal fell apart. He didn't know it existed.*

*Pack meeting today was a disaster. He used Alpha tone to cover the fact that he had no answers. The elders are whispering.*

I read each message twice, my fingertips pressed together, my wolf purring with cold satisfaction.

Grant had always believed the pack ran on his authority. He'd never understood that it ran on my architecture.

Now he was learning.

My grandmother found me on the porch that evening, watching Phoebe play with Buster in the yard. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of gold and rose.

"You're different," she said, settling into the chair beside me.

"I'm angrier."

"No." She shook her head. "You're awake."

I looked at her. She was right. The exhaustion was still there, the years of depletion still weighing on my bones. But underneath, something else was rising. Something that had been buried so long I'd forgotten it existed.

Power.

Not borrowed. Not reflected. Mine.

"The visiting Alphas will arrive in ten days," my grandmother said quietly. "When you walk into that banquet hall, every wolf in the room will feel what you are."

I watched Phoebe laugh as Buster chased a ball across the grass. My daughter. Safe. Happy. Far from a father who couldn't see her and a woman who tried to buy her affection.

"Good," I said softly. "Let them feel it."

My grandmother reached over and squeezed my hand once. Then she stood and went inside, leaving me alone with the sunset and the sound of my daughter's laughter.

I pulled the pressed moonflower from my pocket. Held it up to the fading light. The founding bloodline's emblem. My birthright.

Two weeks.

I pressed my fingertips together and smiled.
