My Alpha Planned My Death to Keep His Lover Alive Summary

I lit the candles myself. All twelve of them, arranged down the center of the dining table in a neat line, the way I'd seen in a wedding magazine two years ago and saved in the back of my mind for someday. White tapers in silver holders. Wildflowers I cut from the garden that morning. The good china — the set Mrs. Elliott gave us as a mating gift, which she reminded me of at least twice a year. Chapter 1 of My Alpha Planned My Death to Keep His Lover Alive

Three years. Tonight was three years since Kayden pressed his teeth to my neck and called me his.

I wore the green dress he once said made my eyes look like pine needles in winter. I'd curled my hair. I'd made the reservation at the restaurant, then canceled it because I thought a private dinner would feel more intimate. More real.

I sat at the head of the table and waited.

At seven, his assistant called to say he was still in transit.

At eight, Kayden called himself. His voice was smooth and warm and utterly convincing. "I'm so sorry, Adelaide. There's been an emergency with the Seattle summit. The Cresthaven Alpha pulled out of the agreement and it's a mess — I can't leave until we've sorted it. I'll make it up to you, I promise."

"Of course," I said. "Don't worry about me. Go handle it."

I meant every word to sound like the devoted Luna I was. And I think it did.

After I hung up, I sat there for another minute, staring at the candles. Then I reached across the table and pinched the first one out between my fingers. Let the wax burn my skin just a little. Grounded myself in the small, clean sting.

That's when it slipped through.

Kayden's mental walls were thick — he'd always had exceptional control for an Alpha — but in the moment he'd dropped his guard to connect with me, something leaked. A crack in the link, just for a second. Maybe he was distracted. Maybe he didn't think I was paying close enough attention.

A woman's laugh. Low and private, the kind that belongs to someone who knows she's the only one in the room who matters.

The bright clink of crystal glasses meeting.

And a single word, breathy and careless: *"Encore."*

French.

I sat very still.

Then I got up, went to his study, and I got to work.

---

The lock on the study door was always a formality. Kayden had given me a key during our first year — a gesture meant to signal trust, I suppose. Or maybe he simply never believed I would use it.

I worked through his filing cabinet first. Administrative records, pack contracts, quarterly finance reports. My hands were steady. My wolf was quiet — she'd been quiet for so long it didn't feel strange anymore, just like a scar that had gone numb.

The Seattle summit was easy to disprove. No registration. No hotel block. No correspondence with the Cresthaven Alpha's office. Nothing.

What I found instead was a printout tucked between two pack boundary maps. A hotel confirmation. Paris. Le Meurice. Four nights.

Guest name: K. Strand. That was his secondary alias — I'd seen it once on an old pack vehicle registration and assumed it was administrative. I'd never questioned it.

The second name on the reservation made the room go very quiet.

Monroe Castro.

I read it twice. The name meant nothing to me then. Just a name. A woman's name on a hotel booking with my husband, in a city three thousand miles from where he claimed to be.

I set the paper down on his desk with the same careful precision I would use to handle broken glass.

Then I went back to the cabinet.

---

The medical file was at the bottom of a locked drawer. I found the key on the back of a framed photograph — one of Kayden and me from our marking ceremony, smiling in the pack clearing with his hand on my waist. I'd always thought that was a sweet place to keep a photo. Now I understood it was just convenient cover.

The file had my name on it. *Adelaide Elliott, née Stephens.* Stamped three years ago, the same month we were marked.

I read the diagnosis slowly.

Severe chronic wolf-blood deterioration. Progressive suppression of shift capability. High-risk indicators for reproductive viability. Treatment protocol recommended: immediate intervention.

Clipped behind it was a second document. A compatibility report. Bone marrow. My name on one column. Monroe Castro's on the other.

98.7% match.

And in the margin, in handwriting I had seen on a thousand pack memos, a thousand grocery lists left on the kitchen counter, a thousand notes signed *love, K* —

*Keep donor viable. Delay treatment. Monroe's window is closing.*

I sat down on the cold floor.

I read both documents again. All the way through, every line, every annotation.

My wolf stirred somewhere deep and distant, and the sound she made wasn't a howl. It was the thin, scraped whimper of something that has been slowly starved for years and has only just now realized it.

I pressed my hand flat against the hardwood floor and felt the cold seep into my palm.

Three years. He had known for three years that my body was failing, and he had buried the file, controlled my healer, and kept me breathing and functional and *available*, like a spare part stored in climate-controlled darkness until someone needed the contents.

I did not scream.

I thought about the candles still burning in the dining room. I thought about the green dress. I thought about the word *encore* slipping through a man's careless mind-link.

And then, very quietly, something inside me stopped grieving and started burning.
