Chapter 1 of My Alpha Mate Stole My Child for His Mistress

Caleb called me to his study late on a Thursday night.

I was folding laundry in the den when his voice came through the mind-link, smooth and unhurried. *Ella. My office. Now.*

I set down the towel I'd been holding and walked down the hall. The house was quiet. Lucas was out on patrol. Thiago had left hours ago for what he'd called a 'pack thing' without offering details. I didn't ask anymore.

Caleb's study door was open. He sat behind his desk with papers spread in front of him, backlit by the amber glow of his desk lamp. He looked up when I entered and gestured to the chair across from him.

"Sit."

I sat.

He slid a document across the desk. "We need to talk about Hollowcrest."

I glanced at the papers. Legal letterhead. Dense paragraphs of text I couldn't read upside down. "What about them?"

"They've filed a territorial lawsuit." His voice was steady, measured. Alpha cadence. "They're claiming the eastern border near the river was misdrawn twenty years ago. They want a formal audit of Ironridge's assets."

I looked up. "That's absurd. The border's been settled for decades."

"I agree." He leaned back in his chair. "But the Lycan Council takes these things seriously. If they find our assets tangled with personal holdings, it could weaken our position. We need to separate everything cleanly."

"Separate how?"

He tapped the document. "Temporarily dissolve the Luna contract. Sever the mate bond on paper. Just until the lawsuit's resolved. It protects the pack."

I stared at him.

He kept talking. "It's a formality. A legal maneuver. Once Hollowcrest's claim is dismissed, we reinstate everything. No one outside the Council even needs to know."

His eyes held mine. Steady. Unwavering.

Too steady.

I'd seen that look before. Years ago, when he'd told me the pack's healer had recommended I stop attending Council meetings because my 'wolf instability' might disrupt important decisions. I'd believed him then. I'd stepped back, told myself it was for Ironridge's good.

But I'd noticed, even then, the way his gaze lingered just a fraction too long when he lied. Like he was overcompensating. Holding eye contact to prove he had nothing to hide.

He was doing it now.

"How long?" I asked quietly.

"What?"

"How long has Hollowcrest been planning this lawsuit?"

He blinked. "A few weeks. Maybe a month. Their Alpha reached out informally first, but we couldn't resolve it."

"And you're just telling me now."

"I didn't want to worry you until I knew it was serious."

I looked down at the document. My name was already typed into the rejection clause. All it needed was my signature.

"Where do I sign?" I asked.

Relief flickered across his face. He pointed. "Here. And here."

I picked up the pen he offered. I held it over the first line.

Then I set it down.

"I need to read it first," I said.

His jaw tightened. "Ella—"

"I'm not signing something I haven't read, Caleb."

For a moment, neither of us moved. Then he pushed his chair back and stood. "Fine. Take it. Read it tonight. We'll finalize tomorrow."

I picked up the document and left without another word.

---

I didn't read it that night.

Instead, I sat in the kitchen with my phone and searched for a name I'd heard whispered at a rogue market two years ago. Vera Salinas. Tracker. No pack affiliation. Expensive, but discreet.

I found her contact through a chain of encrypted messages that took three hours to navigate. When I finally reached her, I kept it simple.

*I need someone followed. Financial records pulled. Communication patterns tracked. Can you do it?*

Her reply came five minutes later. *Yes. Deposit half upfront. Who's the target?*

I hesitated. Then I typed: *My mate.*

Another pause. Then: *Understood. I'll be in touch.*

---

Vera worked fast.

Three days later, she sent an encrypted file to a burner email I'd created. I opened it alone in the house while Caleb was at a Council meeting and the boys were out.

The first document was a series of mind-link fragments. Intercepted communications between Caleb and someone identified only as 'C.' The timestamps went back years.

*C: He's asking questions about the eastern account again.*

*Caleb: Stall him. I'll move the funds tonight.*

*C: When are you going to tell her?*

*Caleb: When it's time. Not before.*

I scrolled further. More fragments. More years.

*C: I miss you.*

*Caleb: Soon. I promise.*

The financial records were worse. Hollowcrest hadn't filed any lawsuit. But Caleb had been funneling Ironridge treasury funds into a private account for years. Disguised as border patrol equipment. Healer stipends. Emergency pack reserves.

All of it redirected to purchase a property on Hollowcrest's outskirts. A den. Small, private, tucked into the forest.

Registered under one name: Camilla Cruz.

My childhood best friend.

The final file was a photograph. Camilla, laughing, her head tilted back. And there, just visible beneath the edge of her silver bracelet—the one she never removed, the one she'd told me was a family heirloom—was the unmistakable curve of a bond mark.

Caleb's mark.

I closed the laptop.

I sat in the dark kitchen for a long time. My hands were steady. My breathing was even. I felt nothing. No rage. No tears. Just a vast, cold clarity.

I opened the cabinet and pulled out flour, sugar, butter. I preheated the oven. I measured ingredients with mechanical precision, creaming butter and sugar until my wrists ached. I folded in eggs. Vanilla. The scent filled the kitchen.

Baking steadied me. It always had. The exact measurements. The chemical reactions. The way raw ingredients transformed into something whole.

While the first batch baked, I retrieved my journal from its hiding place behind the loose baseboard in the laundry room. I'd kept it for years, written in a cipher I'd invented myself. Dates. Observations. The things I noticed but never said aloud.

I cross-referenced the entries with Vera's financial records. Every 'border patrol equipment' withdrawal matched a night Caleb had claimed late Council meetings. Every 'healer stipend' lined up with weekends he'd said he was inspecting the northern territory.

I pressed my fingertips together just below my chin.

I'd already decided.

I pulled out my phone and texted Lucas. *Can you help me move some things tomorrow? Storage unit outside town.*

His reply came immediately. *Of course. Everything okay?*

*Yes,* I typed. *Just cleaning out the garage.*

I set the phone down. The timer beeped. I pulled the cookies from the oven, golden and perfect.

Then I sat at the table and began making a list.
