Chapter 1 of My Alpha Let My Mother Die

The wolfsbane hit Maren's bloodstream at 6:47 on a Thursday morning, and I was scrubbing dried wine off the banquet hall floor when the alarm sounded.

I heard it—three short pulses, the rogue incursion signal—and felt something shift in my chest. Not fear. Something older than fear. A low vibration, deep and silver, like a bell struck once in a locked room.

I dropped the brush and ran.

Dara was already in the medical wing corridor when I got there, her healer's kit clutched against her chest, her expression doing the thing it always did when she had bad news and no authority to act on it.

"Wolfsbane," she said, before I could ask. "Slow-acting compound. Your mother was brought in twenty minutes ago. She's conscious but—" She stopped. "Kora. I have the treatment. I have everything I need."

I already knew what came next. I'd read the pack law documents enough times to recite them in my sleep.

"Alpha command," I said.

Dara looked at the floor. "Pack law requires direct authorization before I can administer it. If he commands it, I can start within the hour. The compound is slow. There's still time."

The vibration in my chest pressed harder against my ribs. My wolf—dormant for two years, silent for longer than that—pushed against the inside of my sternum like something that had been compressed too long and was running out of patience.

I was already moving.

August's private study was at the end of the east wing. I didn't knock. I pushed the door open and stepped inside, and I saw Regina before I saw him—positioned at his shoulder, one hand resting lightly on the back of his chair, her expression shifting into something warm and concerned the moment she registered my face.

August stood at the window. He turned when I entered, and for one second—just one—something moved behind his eyes. His wolf recognizing mine, maybe. Or what was left of mine.

I knelt on the stone floor. Not because I wanted to. Because in Shadowvale, Omegas knelt before Alphas, and I needed him to hear me.

"Wolfsbane," I said. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that. "Slow-acting compound. Maren is in the medical wing. Dara has the treatment ready. She needs your command to administer it. That's all. One word from you and it's done."

August went very still.

It was the stillness I'd watched him use a hundred times—the pause his pack read as Alpha deliberation, careful and considered. I'd believed that once. I knew better now. It was the pause of a man overriding something he didn't want to listen to.

"August." Regina's voice was warm, advisory, the tone she used when she was steering him somewhere he'd already half-decided to go. "You remember what happened last month. The storage incident. She came to you then with an emergency too."

"My mother is dying," I said.

"She's frightened," Regina said, as if I hadn't spoken. "She's been looking for reasons to come to you. You've noticed it yourself." A small, sympathetic pause. "This is the bond, August. She's using it. You know how to handle this."

I watched his jaw tighten. I watched him make the decision.

"Kora."

His Alpha tone came through our incomplete bond like a hand closing around my throat—not painful, just absolute. The resonance of it traveled through the partial mark he'd never completed, and my body received it before my mind could argue.

"Stay away from the healer's quarters."

The compulsion locked my legs mid-rise. I felt my muscles seize, my body obeying what every conscious part of me was screaming against. I pressed my thumb into the center of my opposite palm—hard, harder, until the skin went white—the only resistance my body would allow me.

"She's manipulating you," Regina said softly, smoothing something on his desk. The angle of a pen. "You made the right call."

I don't remember leaving the study. I remember the corridor floor against my knees. I remember pressing my back against the cold stone wall and pressing my thumb into my palm until I felt the bone beneath the skin, and I remember the exact moment—three hours later, in the grey hour before dawn—when I heard my mother's voice rise from across the pack house, and then break, and then go silent.

The incomplete mark pulsed once in my chest. Cold. Indifferent. Then it settled back into its usual silence, like a door closing in an empty room.

Before sunrise, I heard Regina's footsteps in the corridor. Measured. Unhurried. I watched through the gap beneath the door as she passed—her shoes precise and even on the stone—and she paused once to straighten the angle of a cup on the corridor table before she walked away.

I pressed my thumb into my palm one final time.

Then I got up, and I went back to work.
